I started taking lessons last fall and I must say it’s been humbling to be a complete beginner as an adult. It’s finally become fun and I really enjoy sitting down and playing. My teacher takes the summer off and I’m trying to decide if I should find a teacher just for the summer or just continue on my own.
Do you play an instrument?

It depends how you define “play piano”. 😂

I have dabbled in piano, guitar, ukulele, and samisen (Japanese instrument, that is sort of like a banjo, that I inherited from my grandmother). I am not good enough in any of them to play for anybody except for poor SO. Lol! I like the ukulele because I have small hands, but prefer the sound of the guitar.
During the summer, I would just practice what you have learned until you start back up in the fall. Maybe pick up one or two new pieces to practice on so you stay fresh. How fun!

When I was a child I played the accordion, got an organ when I got married, so switched then. My husband took Accordion lessons for a few years after we got married, then took organ lessons, and became the church organist. After he retired, he took piano lessons. He loved the organ best. I didn't have time to play the organ after I became a nurse, so I quit lessons, and enjoyed my husbands music.

I wish I did! I have my ex MIL's 100 year old beautiful upright piano in my house and I live alone It actually belongs to dd#1 who is 23 and will not have her own place for a couple more years because she is in school ... so I babysit the piano I'm downsizing before the Fall and I have to lug the thing to my new condo

I tinkle the keys. My husband plays quite well. We have a piano in our living room and my son can reach the keys now, he loves to reach up and play a little tune. If you stand by the piano he will grab your thumb and drag your hand across the keys.

I really, really would love to be able to play a piano. I tried lessons in college and it just didn't work out. The teacher assumed I knew things I didn't --for example she never taught me how to know the tempo/beat. I am sure the attempt for me to learn was a dreadful experience for her.

I play well enough to accompany songs in my classroom.

Used to play. I took piano for 8 years growing up, but haven't seriously played in over 40 years now. With a little time and practice I could probably play decently, but I doubt well.

I took piano and flute lessons while growing up. Played the flute in high school concert and marching band. Got rid of the flute years and years ago. I have my late mother’s upright piano. Hauled 1000 miles to TX and back. I’m really at the point in my life that I need to get rid of it. I haven’t played in years. It’s hard to part with it because of sentimental reasons. I put out a few feelers, but I’ve been told it has no monetary value and no one wants it even as a donation. So here it sits, taking up space. Sigh.

As I've mentioned before, my mother was a concert pianist and her mother was a composer. So, yes, I played, but my instrument was my voice, so I prefer to sing. A nephew is a symphonic violinist. We're a very musical family.

I would love to, but I don’t think it is in my wheelhouse. I can play the funeral March though. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/OrTI4SBmZ2ZYSFv6ag4f.jpg)

I play a bit. I’m mostly self-taught, but took one year of piano lessons as an adult and learned a lot. I play ukulele and am trying to learn guitar.

How fun for you! Isn't it great when you start to notice improvement? I have a friend who is also learning in her 50s to play the piano that she inherited.
I haven't played for years. I used to play lots of instruments but nothing very well except the rhythm guitar. I sang and played the penny whistle and guitar in a band, and also basic bass guitar, and some drumming. I can accompany myself on the keyboard but only by ear. I learned the violin at school and then joined an Irish fiddle class which again, was all by ear. A friend taught me the flute.

I also learned the piano as an adult, and yes I still play it. I also play the flute, guitar, soprano and alto recorders, and sing in choirs. One big regret of my life is that I've never learned the violin. Or even better would be the viola. I know I could probably find a used one somewhere and find a teacher, but it just seems daunting. I have never forgotten the music teacher way back in elementary school who told me that I couldn't take the violin because "you have to be very musical to learn that". She told me to play the clarinet. In retrospect I'm sure it was because I already played the recorder and they needed people to play clarinet, and since I already played something that you blow into.... ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/pd7N3dneptLj3pbgz5Gd.jpg) Anyway, they wouldn't let me play the violin, I played clarinet for one year, then stopped. I was happy when my kids got to elementary school instrument age the music teacher said they could play whatever they wanted. She told me that she didn't care if she had an entire room full of trumpets or whatever, if that's what the kids wanted to play then that was fine with her. Anyway, tangent, lol.... in your case I would just keep practicing over the summer, maybe add a few new pieces that you probably have in one of your piano books -- or buy something new, something fun and/or different, like hymns, or show tunes, or whatever -- and start back up in the fall with your regular teacher.

So glad you are enjoying your piano experience. Why not find some new music for summer enjoyment? I have played the piano for most of my life. I am the youngest of three children, and my sister and brother were taking lessons when I was preschool age. My brother was practicing his recital piece—a lot. I said to him one day, “just show me where to put my fingers on the keys, and I will play your recital piece”. He, of course, laughed at me, but did show me, and I played the piece perfectly. He called Mom, and I played it again for her. She told the teacher, and the teacher was intrigued, and had me come to the next lesson and play it for her. I really could play this piece, and she let me play it for the recital, and my poor brother had to learn another piece!😏. I began lessons with her the following fall, still a preschooler, and took 2 lesson a week because I loved it so much. I took lessons for 12 years or so, but did not major in piano in college. My skills lay dormant until our youngest child began elementary school, and I returned to piano lessons with the most wonderful teacher . I took with him for 5 years or so, and loved working on my technique and expanding my repertoire. He also encouraged me to teach, and I did so for about 10 years. Adult students were always a joy to teach. I still play, but not publicly anymore. Piano is one of the ❤️ of my life.

I can play but I'm very rusty now as I haven't really played that much for a number of years and the piano is still at my mother's house. I wouldn't play in front of anyone but family. I used to play the clarinet in the school band but that would be even worse than my piano playing at this time ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) I can muster up a simple tune on a sax but again it's gone by the board over the years and I no longer have either instruments.

I have always wanted to take lessons, so, last year I finally started. I have done several recitals, and even though right now life is too busy for me to practice much, my teacher is very patient with me.
Once my senior is graduated, I hope to be able to do more with it, but, I am happy with my very slow progress.

I took lessons for a couple years when I was middle school age, but dropped it. We have DH’s family Wurlitzer piano that has been moved twice and that no one here can play. It’s just taking up space at this point. DD plays trumpet and has no interest in it, so we will probably find somewhere to offload it. It’s incredibly difficult to even give away an old piano.

I do! Started when I was 4, hated practicing but I'm glad my mother made me do it since it's a pretty lucrative side gig accompanying choirs and playing the organ/piano at church. I agree with the suggestion to find some fun music to learn over the summer and go for it!

I can read music, and I know the notes and stuff. Making my fingers obey takes more work than it did when I was a kid since I am terribly out of practice.
ETA: My DD plays really well, and there is constant music in this house now. She started after she already knew how to read music, and I think that made a lot of different in how quickly she picked up the actual playing of the instrument.

I have my grade 7 Royal Conservatory of Music certificate and also all the Musical Theory certificates.
I haven't played in a long while, but do enjoy listening to music. Knowing how to read music is really helpful and I was also taught how to "read" a conductor's music sheet, with all of the instruments playing at various times. My one friend did her conducting debut at Carnegie Hall, NYC.

I took lessons for over 10 years when I was a kid and really enjoyed playing. I played with the idea of going to school to be a music teacher, but music teaching positions were hard to come by at the time and I opted to be an elementary teacher instead. When I was in college we had to take a class for teaching elementary music. I remember that my classmates who had never played piano or a band instrument had a terrible time learning to read music, play a recorder, learning the keys of the piano, etc. Early in my teaching career I used a backpay check to buy a piano. Both my my kids learned to play it. No one plays it anymore. I should start again.
