I would see if a friend could take a photo of him in the borrowed cap and gown. You would at least have that.

This was my big fear a couple of weeks ago when my daughter graduated. It worked out OK for us, but I really do feel for you.

Three things... I hope your sick one doesn't get worse, only better!! I agree you made a really difficult, but very responsible decision (and NO one has to like it! It's not fair! ). CONGRATULATIONS to your DS!!! Plan something BIG for later in the summer when you can do it all outside. Let him "walk" and receive his degree, get it framed and make it look nice. You can be outdoors and a little "safer" for the visitors & family members.

I am so sorry about the disappointment for this huge event in your family. Thank you for being conscientious about others and putting others in danger.

I am so sorry for all of you. Graduation is such an important milestone for parents and children, what a bummer. I hope you can all find another way to celebrate long distance on the day, and then in person soon. Will they be doing a livestream, or a video for later, on even could he ask his friends to take massive amounts of photos for you on the day? So many important and meaningful celebrations have been struck down the past couple of years. I'm just so sorry that it's happening to your family And I hope your other son doesn't get too ill.

It is funny but of all my kid's activities, I always found graduations to be the most tedious: gets there early, usually on a hot day; wait in the bleachers while saving your seats as it get more and more crowded; yell at the parent that thinks sitting in front of everyone with a huge balloon bouquet is ok; sit through the admin giving the same speech and never your kid's valedictorian speech; wait forever for your kid to be called up for 4.5 seconds while the audience gets more and more raucous; trying to find your graduate in the crowd afterwards, all hot and sweaty; and fighting to get out of the parking lot with everyone else.
I was thrilled last year when our youngest son's graduating class of 500 was divided into thirds and it was at the HS, not downtown. It was 10 minutes of speeches and bam bam bam here are 166ish graduates. Thanks and bye! It was a good thing we paid attention because our son was the first one up!

Aww, that sucks - I'm sorry that happened to your family. Congratulations to your son! I hope the younger one has a mild case and feels better soon.
ETA: I would definitely check on whether there is a livestream of the event - so many college graduations have had these issues (especially in the past 2 years) that it's become much more common. Also they tend to leave the video of the event up for a while on the university's website/YT channel so family and friends can access it if they have to miss the live event due to unforeseen circumstances (and haven't we all had plenty of those in the last couple of years??). I know it's not the same, but I hope you are able to celebrate with him later on when everyone is well.

Thanks for all your replies. The live stream is wrapping up and I have two observations:
1) My son's GPA was even more impressive than I thought. With grade inflation these days, I was wondering if his 3.7 GPA was standard. Nope. I think 7 computer science majors were announced as "cum laude" or above. 2) Chico State has a huge "minority" graduation rate. Strictly going on names I'd guess graduates were 60% Hispanic, 20% white, 20% other. This is so great to see and hope the best for their employment future. There were maybe 7 female CS majors. HOORAY!! I know how it is as a female engineer.
My son had advantages: two parents with degrees and two grandfathers with degrees (and my dad with a masters as well). I'm not going to pretend my son didn't have it easier than most. We saved up since he was born. If their was no pandemic, he may have been in debt for 10K but since we saved on rent, no debt. He will live with us for a bit but then go off to live a pretty decent live as a CS engineer in the Silicon Valley. What more would you want?

Oh no, nightmare. My mum tested positive on the morning of her sister's funeral, so none of us could go. But they did live stream it. Not the same, but less stressful for an 87-year-old. ETA: subsequent lateral flow tests and a PCR were all negative, so it is likely to have been a false positive. None of us had any symptoms and no more positive tests. Pfft. I hope he isn't too poorly, and that nobody else gets it.

I hope all the rest of you stay healthy. I understand the disappointment. My son graduated from Ohio State in 2020 in an online ceremony. It was a huge letdown, as we'd planned to attend his senior recital and concerts in addition to graduation. All our plans were canceled. But we managed to move on, and he's happily working and living a great life. It turned out to be a blip in life. Congrats to your son on all his accomplishments and good luck in his new career.
