Recently I've been scrapping vacation pictures and ended up with about 8 finished layouts. I think I did about 5 two page layouts and the rest were one page layouts. I used a collection kit plus extra embellishments and 4 extra 12x12 papers. I realized after all the paper and pictures were adhered that I have quite a bit of paper left over. I can't tell if it's my old habit of hoarding paper or if it's simply a preference for a less "busy" layout. I've been doing so much better about not hoarding paper and just using and cutting into whatever I feel like using so I can't really say it's hoarding. Maybe I was concerned about running out of paper? Not sure.
So I'm curious if other scrappers go light on paper or use lots of different patterns and layers. If you use lots of paper what is your thought process when choosing paper and designing your layout?

I do both! Often the background paper will tell me whether I'm going all in on the patterned paper or only using a little, or even none. I like the look of both and am comfortable going either way.

I tend to be more cardstock heavy - but I'm using more PP than I used to but not a lot as in it's not making much of a dent in my stash...I think in part because I tend to use smaller pieces/strips than whole sheets

I absolutely do both, depending on the photos. I recently did a couple of double page layouts using a template designed for travel photos, and I used NO paper at all. Then if I'm scrapping birthday photos or single enlarged photos, I tend to use LOTS of different patterns. As a digital scrapper I never have to worry about running out of paper!

I use a lot of patterned paper. I mix and match patterns. I use much less solid colors.
I mat or frame almost all of my photos. I use a patterned 8.5 x 11 for the page and mat with a different pattern, sometimes use a third pattern as a base for a title and put alphabet letters on it. I will sometimes use two patterns as the 8.5 x 11 background (cutting each in half vertically or horizontally 1/2 of this and 1/2 of that).

As I've recently been reducing my paper stash to fit it into my existing storage I've realised I don't use nearly enough pattern paper compared to what I own. I'm trying to use more patterned backgrounds, or things like half and half designs that use bigger pieces of paper, but my natural style is definitely on the less side.

I think I tend to use around 4 patterns or sometimes less. It's not a hard and fast rule, but just something I noticed. It takes me a long time to go through a collection kit for that reason.

I tend to switch it up depending on my mood, whether I am trying to follow a aketch or a class, how many pic’s on the page, and other factors.
If I like a line I try to get duplicates of the papers I like so I can feel free to layer it up and take chances with cutting and inking and not worry about needing to conserve papers

I often use 2 patterns, but rarely more than that. Like grammadee, I will buy multiples of paper I like. If I love both sides and they coordinate, like a floral and a plaid, I buy 3 sheets. That way I can make a 2 page layout with the favorite side and cut up the 3rd sheet to use on the layout.

I'm a PL scrapper mostly. But when I'm doing a vacation album or something I tend to use things more sparingly because I fear running out before I am done scrapping all the pictures. Is that maybe why you used things more sparingly?
If it's just one layout, I use things to my hearts content and feel no guilt about it. I figure there is always more I want to buy.

I don't use as much as I want to! I love PP and want to use it all, but I'm a pretty simple scrapper and end up using only 2 or 3 patterns on a layout. Every page is different though, and somedays we feel like going crazy, and somedays we keep it simple. I think that's a part of the creative journey.

For me, it depends on if I'm using a cut file or not. I really like the Paige Evans-style large cut files backed with assorted patterned papers (though they are a pain to assemble, lol). I will use lots of papers if I'm doing a layout like that. For others, where I'm not using a cut file, I find I use 2 or maybe 3 patterned papers at most. Not sure why that is, but that's just what I find myself doing.

This thread is reminding me...years ago when I was a fairly new scrapper...there were suggestions to conserve paper by cutting out the centre of a background paper to use later (the hole wouldn't be seen because it would be covered by other elements, doing the same for PP mats, etc... I remember thinking about it - I was a super low budget scrapper then...we didn't really have two nickels to rub together so most of my supplies were gifts or handmedowns from a scrappy friend -but I decided against it...it didn't seem worthwhile to me.

I do this sometimes, if I really like the background paper. Sometimes I'll use the center portions to mat my photos or use as title letters to further incorporate that paper into the layout, or I'll just save it for later usage. Again, I only do this if I really like the background paper. If its just plain colored cardstock or a paper I'm not super attached to, I don't bother. That said, it is a great idea for conserving paper if you need or want to.

I'm a lots of paper person - BUT - If I'm doing layers or pieces are "barely" seen in a layered situation, I struggle to cut into new pp. I definitely use my scraps for layers. uggestions to conserve paper by cutting out the centre of a background paper to use later I always do this! I want the scraps later because it makes me feel freer to create those layers. Sometimes, I get to the end of a layout and realize I want a scrap of paper to finish a final embellishment cluster, and I have to go back and cut it out from behind a photo to get the right pattern/colour. So now I tend to cut pieces out as a precaution.

sparingly
Most of my pages are one pattern paper and some cardstock. If it's a double sided PP, I might use both sides. I would love to do multiple patterns, but I can't seem to make it work.

I always used to use patterned paper sparingly - it's no doubt because I started off as a Creative Memories scrapper - but I've been using more and more patterned papers over the years.
I decided recently that I no longer want to keep left over patterned paper once it's been used in a layout, so I try to use as much of the papers that I choose for my project so that I don't have to deal with organizing and storing paper that I'll probably never use again.

I think that’s probably it. I had originally planned to use Janet/RTS collection cut up guide but decided against it because I wasn’t sure it would work for me. Also, some of those layouts are picture heavy so there wasn’t much room for a lot of paper. But the important thing is I’m happy with how they turned out. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts on their paper usage.

I have used my creative memory circle templates to cut a circle from the middle of a layered piece. I don’t do it as often anymore, but occasionally.

When I scrapped 12x12 layouts, it really depended on what I was going with. Sometimes I had a white background with minimal paper. Sometimes I had lots of layers. If I went with lots of layers, I made sure they were not competing with each other. No stripe on stripe or dot on dot.
On my occassional 9x12 layout for pocket scrapbooking, I mainly go 1 pattern paper.

I still very occasionally do this, but it has to be a paper that I absolutely love, know I will want to use again, and not be able to easily re-purchase. On most of my pages though I'm happy to cover up big chunks of papers that have been in my stash for a while, that I could easily find an alternative for, or am unlikely to want to use again.

While I have tons and tons of PP my personal style uses it very sparingly. I don’t have much ability for mixing/matching/layering so rarely ever use more than 2 PPs, and that’s usually in strips.

I do this when I love the paper or if I’m doing a two page spread and I only have one sheet of a pattern that I want to bring to the other side and the lightbulb just went on for me as to why it never made sense to ME to do that - I'm an 8.5x11 scrapper who almost always buys 12x12 sheets...I always have a wide strip leftover I can use on the other side of a 2-page layout if need be.

My style is simple, clean, linear, minimalist, etc., so I use paper sparingly (in strips, blocks, etc.), even when many patterns are on a layout, compared to others. ETA: ...I would love to do multiple patterns, but I can't seem to make it work. I learned the secret to mixing patterns is in the relation, scale, & proportion. Papers should share a common color, intensity, theme, mood/feel, style, &/or other trait & feature different sizes &/or types of patterns. Think of the recipe for patterns on your layout as a gallon/pint/ounce (or gallon/quart/pint/cup/ounce, if using 5+ different patterns). For example, select a solid or small repetitive pattern (eg polka dots) to use as the background (gallon), add a stripe or plaid (eg multicolor) to frame the layout or ground page elements (pint), & include a bold pattern (eg graphic floral) for narrow photo mats (ounce). HTH.

When I scrapped 12x12 I was a more the merrier pattern paper user. I do pocket pages now and still love patterns and use as many as I can with PL cards and making my own patterns with stamps, and also using pp at times, without it overwhelming the spread. I enjoy the look of layers.

This is me, too. To use a lot of different background papers, I need a sketch to go by. I’ll happily cut up multiple layers if I have an idea what the final layout will look like. If I’m just putting it together myself, I find is don’t use more than one or two different papers. I’m happy with simple layouts and find matching colors/patterns is fun in small amounts LOL.
