Hello fellow Peas. I have gotten back into reading books after not doing it for many years. I tried to make a goal of the number of books to read this year (25). Well so far, I have only finished 3 LOL. I also love magazines and online news articles. Just wondering for my avid readers how do you balance your book reading with newspaper/magazine article reading? And just in general how do you find time to read? I feel like it will take me until next century to read everything.

I'm pretty picky with my reading. I havn't read a magazine in yrs, and they are pretty quick reads. I read during my noon hour, and every night before bed, and then wkends. My goal this yr is 15. Last yr was 12. Right now I've read 12 books this yr.

We have averaged 40+ books a year since 2019. We read before bed and at times during the day. I usually read books that are between 300-400 pages. We find books that interest us ~ mystery, thrillers, some historical fiction. If the book doesn't suck me in within the first 50 pages or so, I give myself permission to move one. I used to subscribe to several magazines but let everything go except Consumer Reports. We read the newspaper when we eat breakfast. It's gotten so pitiful it's about the size of the Weekly Reader when I was in grade school.

First you have to accept that you'll never be able to read everything. Personally I don't read magazines. And I don't read the newspaper in paper format anymore. We do digital and I browse around that or the BBC site for my news. As for finding the time to read... I've heard that annoying saying "we all have the same 24 hours". Yes, it's true we all have the same 24 hours, but we don't all have the same obligations that fill that 24 hours. Anyone with a full-time job and/or kids still at home has many more obligations on their 24 hours than does someone like me (part-time job, no kids at home). So for me I usually read first thing in the morning with my coffee, probably at lunch while eating, and definitely in bed before I go to sleep. But I have the luxury of being able to get in bed at 8:00 which means I can read for and hour or two before going to sleep. If you have kids to wrangle in the evenings you won't have that ability. Also, in terms of the actual reading...I've become much less patient with books that aren't grabbing me. If I'm not liking it then I don't finish it. Back to the library it goes. There are too many other books to read to spend time on one that I'm not really liking. eta: stingfan's post reminded me that I didn't mention audiobooks! I used to hate them, and I'm still not good at them if the book has too many characters or a complicated plot (think multiple time lines, lol). My mind wanders too much and I lose track. But mysteries are good, and often psychological thrillers. I also used to not be able to listen because they were soooooooo sloooooooooow. omg . And then I learned about increasing the speed! hahahaha at me. Now I listen at 2x speed. I do audiobooks in the car while I'm doing errands, or when I'm doing kitchen stuff, or laundry, etc.

I have to do audiobooks. If I read paper/kindle, I always fall asleep. So I listen when I'm driving alone, working around the house/yard, etc. I get through a lot this way. Sometimes I get so into the book, it motivates me to keep cleaning house or whatever just so I can keep listening. I also listen at 2X speed.

I get up early and that is my main reading time for books. I read other things in the car and waiting for kids, etc.

I used to be an avid reader but lately not so much. I don’t set goals. I read when I feel like it, often to relax before going to sleep. If the book sucks me in I might get through it really quickly, but it really depends.

I read magazines or online news articles during the day, but I read a book every night before I fall asleep. Sometimes it is only 10 minutes because I am exhausted or it is late, but usually it is 20-30 minutes. If I am not interested in what I am reading I find that I read less and am not excited to read. Try reading a different genre or listen to audiobooks while you walk or clean your house.

Getting a Kindle Paperwhite made a huge difference in the amount of reading I do now. There is no web browser or other apps distracting me. Also so easy to get books from the library. I've read about 30 books this year. Before I might have read 1 or 2 only when I was on vacation.
I also like that it is not backlit so I can read in bed and not be stimulated by the light. And if I wake up in the middle of the night I can read with out bothering dh too much.

I 'read' while I walk my dog and use an audiobook. I also read before bedtime (on my kindle). At any point in time I have two books going.

I read quickly so just reading a book doesn't take me as long as it does for others.
I read a print newspaper which is only a shadow of what it once was.
I give a book 50-100 pages and if it is not holding my attention, then I move on.
I try to alternate between serious writing and fun, so that I can read both.

I listen to audiobooks while crafting. I turn them off if I have to figure something out but for many tasks, I can listen and work. Sometimes I listen in the car as well. I also listen at the gym if I'm in a class.
I used to love magazines but now there is just nothing to them. I can't see spending the money on something I can consume in such a short time. Usually I can find better content online. I do subscribe to a couple of on-line newspapers.

I think it depends on what you read. I don't read articles/magazines and I very rarely read non fiction. I know I can read a 3-400 page book in about 7 hours so theoretically if I read an hour every night before bed I could finish a book a week.
I have to block out time otherwise I'd never get to it. Whether that's "ok for this half hour I'm reading" or "2 chapters and I'm done". I wish I was an auditory learner cos I'd love to listen to audiobooks but I know I'd miss too much as my mind wanders.

I used to read the newspaper often. But our local paper went online, so we stopped the subscription. My husband started getting the Wall Street Journal, but I don't read it as I can no longer see well enough to read with my contacts in. And at night, I just read a book. So I pretty much only read books and only read at night before bed. I miss reading during the day!

I am not the type of person that makes a reading goal. I enjoy reading, it's something I do to relax so making a goal and forcing myself to read quickly or read more turns it into just another task for me. I read before bed every night and usually for part of my lunch hour. Typically I read about 1-2 books per week.

I don’t set reading goals and I also don’t read with a book club. I like to read the books I like and not what someone thinks we should all read. I will give a book about 50 pages; if I don’t like I stop and move on. I don’t think this would work for a book club. I never feel guilty about dropping a book that’s not holding my attention. I also don’t worry about starting a new release while still having unread books on my Kindle. Read what you want, when you want; life’s too short.
As mentioned above depending on your job, kids and other activities, will determine how much time you have to read. We are all different. For me, my main hobby is reading. I don’t read magazines or newspapers. My DH and I have our own business and work from home with no kids at home. During the week, I read mostly at night while watching tv; so about 6 pm to midnight. On the weekends, depending on our plans, I might be reading on and off all day.
Do what makes you happy. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else.
Happy Reading, if you choose !

I listen to audiobooks, which allows me time to multi-task. Clean, cook, etc. I read on my kindle before I go to sleep and right after I wake up. I am almost at 50 books so far this year.

I do set a goal, but only because it’s fun for me to keep track. Reading is my favorite hobby and that’s why I can read as much as I do. I believe reading books should be a pleasure and not a chore once you’re done school (and even in school I’d prefer it be a pleasure!) If it’s not for you, it’s not for you and that’s ok!

I don't read actual newspapers or magazines. I read the daily and weekly news briefs and breaking news, which I receive by email. I scan the emails and read what I want to and scroll past the rest. I view my email throughout the day on my desktop computer or phone, so I usually don't have a lot to catch up on.
I usually read for an hour or two (or more) before bed. I read ebooks via the Library website and on occasion an actual Library book.
I always have an ongoing "to be read" and "for later" book list. Some are books I want to read, other are suggestions and recommendations from various sources. When I've read the books I "want" to read, then I choose from the "suggested and recommended list". I am always adding to my list. I will never be caught up and that is very okay.

I absolutely love to read and have since I was a child. I'm never without a book that I'm reading. I typically read 2-3 books a week. Having retired last year, I now have more free time on my hands to read but I don't have a book goal. I also read to relax, not to learn like some people. If the book doesn't interest me with the first few pages, I move on.

I do most of my reading in the summer on our boat. In the winter, I spend more time on the computer.

I have always loved to read. As a teacher for 40 years my reading was extremely limited during the school year and picked up a little over summer and winter breaks. Now that I'm retired I'm making up for lost time! I'm currently reading between 6 and 8 books a month. I read 3 magazines: Real Simple, HGTV and Reveal. Honestly, I read my magazines in the bathroom! I get a lot read in there! The local newspaper only comes out twice a week and I can get through it in 10 to 15 minutes. (It's a small town!) Since I do want to spend my time on other things also (scrapping, card making, piano, hammered dulcimer, exercising, etc.) I've made a conscious decision to spend less time on the computer and less time watching TV (much easier now that This Is Us is over) and fill that time with reading. What can I say? Retirement is good!!

If you want to be a reader, then you need to prioritize reading over other leisure activities. For the last few years I have read 90-120 books a year.
I no longer read newspapers or magazines. I have a few favoured news sites online that I read periodically during the day so that I know what's going on in the world. Sometimes I look at celebrity gossip as well, but I haven't bought or read a magazine in years. I also spend minimal time on other social media. I don't post my own content on any of them, but do follow some hobby/interest groups. All those things combined usually don't take more than an hour a day.
One of the reasons I wasn't "reading" was because I had vision correction surgery in my 20s and as I've aged the vision in each eye is quite different, I now need to wear glasses to read, but they give me double vision & headaches after a short time. Then I made the switch to audiobooks and everything changed. Audio isn't for everyone and it is a learned skill, you have to learn to actively listen, the book can't be in the background, it needs to be the focus of your attention. I also get motion sickness so I could never read while travelling, but now I can listen to audiobooks whole going to and from work & social events and while walking and also for some (not all) boring chores. That has increased my available reading time.
There are so many ways we can entertain ourselves at home home, endless streaming & TV shows, games, internet etc. If you want to be a person who reads then you have to actively choose to read instead of doing all those other things.
I also make reading a part of my life, I ask people what they are reading, I comment on books when I see people reading, I talk about books, I go to Goodreads and keep lists of books I want to read, I keep a record of what I have read, I set goals...all of that keeps me in the mindset of thinking about books and makes it easy to want to keep reading.
Saying all of that...if you don't want to or can't read more: then don't. It's just another hobby, people who read aren't better people than those who don't.

I set aside 15 minutes a day before bed that I 100% plan to read. Most nights I read much more than that (especially recently because I don’t watch TV right before bed anymore). I like having a specific amount of time set aside and it keeps me on track with my reading. Especially since my TBR is never going to stop growing.

I think I am one of those odd people who read around three hundred fifty plus book a year! The more you read the faster you you become at reading and the better your comprehension becomes so you don’t waste effort or any rereading!

I always have an audiobook and a paper book going. I listen when I walk, drive, clean my house, craft ect... I don't watch a lot of Tv, I read instead and I take a book with me everywhere so if I'm waiting I'm reading.

I read about 50-80 books per year and I find that if I try to make a goal to read 20 min per day I get into the routine of reading and read more. I do listen to audiobooks which help and always bring my kindle with me. Also helps to read books that you want to read, don’t waste time on what you don’t want to read, to having trouble finishing. It’s okay to DNF a book.

I read 15 minutes every day. Some days I read more, but I always make it a priority to read for at least 15 mins minimum per day. I also check out my books in my kindle from the library so it adds pressure to finish my loans.

Most of my books are audio. But I always have a book on my kindle. My son plays soccer and it’s too far to drop off and leave so I always bring my book to get some reading done. I think the secret is always being aware of down time to squeeze in a few pages.

I became an English teacher because I love to read. Ironically, because I'm an English teacher, I have no time to read. I maybe read 1-2 actual paper books per month, but I listen to audiobooks on my daily one-hour commute. It's the best I can do right now.
It used to bother me, but I'm now at peace with it. I constantly compared myself to people who read 1-3 books a week, which just doesn't work for me. I have far too many obligations with my job, family, going back to school, etc. It's the way my life is. I try to squeeze in 30 minutes before bed, but sometimes I'm too tired. I'm hoping to read more this summer. I'm really, really excited to retire and read constantly! Too bad it's 10 years away!
