Ok, so no one smacked me around for yesterday's thread, so here's another. Beware, I've got so many things I'd love to discuss with you cardmakers, but I'll try to space the threads out better after this one!
Anyhow, can we talk about 8.5x11 sized COLORED cardstock today?
Do you have a favorite brand that is solid core? Is it strong enough to use as a card base? <---- it doesn't need to be Neenah 110lb strong, but it would be great if it's Neenah 80lb strong. I'd love to find a solid core brand in 8.5x11 size that I can occassionally use (in a light shade of the color) as a card base (not just a card front). I recently got a pack of the SSS CS in Fog color...love the color...it's the perfect light warm gray IMO (first time buying it) but the paper in the pack wasn't square. Super annoying since it's not cheapo stuff.
When I do find 8.5x11 CS I find that it's only sold in packs of 25, which can be a bit of a commitment, KWIM?
Back in the days when I scrapbooked (it's been 16-17 years) I bought 12x12, but there was (IIRC) just as much 8.5x11 CS available as there was 12x12. Now, I am finding that I have to purchase 12x12, then cut it to 8.5x11 so that it fits in the holders with my other CS. I was initially leaving it at 12x12, but didn't like having to check two CS holders for a particular color. Does that make sense?
So...anyhow....back to the question: Do you buy (high quality) 8.5x11 CS by the sheet, and if so, where? Or are you just doing the 12x12 thing?
Thanks a bunch!

You can buy full size 8.5x11 samples at www.cardstock-warehouse.com, so if you only want one or four pieces of a color, no problem. Samples ship free. Someone posted here that some she got from them weren’t square and I was curious which ones they were. I haven’t had that problem, and checked a bunch of different types after she posted that. Their customer service is excellent. Small company, once someone spent 15-20 minutes on the phone with me helping me figure out which type of cardstock and colors would be best for a project, since some colors were sold out (supply chain). And super quick shipping. I bought their sample ring that has a ton of their cardstocks but they keep getting new papers in so it’s never going to be complete. peasquared might give her opinion too. It’s j important to choose cover weight in the drop-down menu, not text weight. Some of their cover cardstock has two weights - 65 or 100. Or three if they also have text weight. If you get stuck deciding what to get and you call someone can help too, or they have a chat box. I like their pearlized too - very subtle.

I’ll take a look again 🙂 I’d like to think businesses would be given a chance to fix problems, especially small businesses that are so customer focused and dependent. After the post I checked all their papers, both text (subtly metallic for envelopes!) and cover stock. I have a lot of their papers. Everything is square. My Carl tabletop cutter is easy to check with since it has a large, solid bed. When I’m cutting 8.5x11 into 4.25x11, now and then I don’t cut straight, noticed a millisecond after the cut is done. (It’s the cats’ fault.) Fixing it takes less than a minute, with the tiniest strip removed. I’ve seen famous card makers do the same thing in videos. And I’ve done the same when adhering a card front wonkily to a base. Fixable. If paper wasn’t square, if it was only a few sheets I wouldn’t want replacements since fixable, but would let a company know. If it was a big pack, a replacement would be good.

CardBoxer and peasquared , can you tell me which are you favorite CS type at Cardstock Warehouse? It sounds to me that their "pop-tone" is the smoothest finish, am I understanding their explanation correctly? Their Colorplan is a bit cofusing to me as it mentions that is has a "certain tactile quality" like an antique vellum, but I'm not really understanding what they mean. Is it smooth enough to stamp on in your opinion? Lastly, how do you both feel about the "foundations?" They're only sold in packs of 25, no individual sheets, so that's a committment. Thanks so much!

I did every color of the Colorplan and some of the Sirio Color and Mirror The Sirio is super smooth. All of their cardstock is rich in color. I didn't try the Foundations, sorry, I can't comment on them. I also have Taylored Expressions, Concord & 9th, Stampin Up, Gina K, Lawn Fawn (Some) and Stamp Market. They are all pretty similar except Stamp Market. Their paper has a more porous feel. Slight handmade feel. Different papers for different things. CardBoxer introduced me to their cardstock, and I love it. She will really be able to help you.

Thank you The first site looks like one must purchase a minimum of 25 sheets of any one color, am I missing an option for single sheets iowagirl50147 or a lesser quantity? They're got a great selection of colors! The second one has a minimum of 15 sheets per color which still is a commitment but doable. Definitely going to look further here.

Most is leftover from more than 15 years ago when I scrapbooked. When you say that the Stamp Market has a more porous feel, it's a difficult description for me to comprehend. For me, if I'm using the colored CS as a card base, I'd like the option to go "clean and simple" and stamp a sentiment directly on it. Do you stamp? And if so, do you find The Stamp Market paper to be good for that? Yeah, I can tend to get into the minutia of things.....sorry!

I used to own a LSS when I scrapbooked, so I have lots of Bazzill, too. I used to get pizza boxes full at their warehouse during Creative Escape events, it was so fun! Now I only make cards and a few paper arts items. So, I don't use it as often because of the texture. I love Stamp Market cardstock for die cutting, and especially making flowers, as the porous texture allows it to curl better. It feels thicker and for lack of a better word, pulpier. For stamping and especially for using Copics, the smoother the better, I think, anyway. The stamped images will be crisper and the markers won't bleed. I hope that all makes some sense.

Hmm...used to be able to buy 5 sheets per color but that doesn't appear to be an option anymore. I did find a variety pack that is available. thepapercut.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TPC&Offset=0&SortBy=&Category_Code=BULKVARIETYI usually skip over the 8 1/2 x 11 paper and go to the scored cards. Here thepapercut.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TPC&Category_Code=SCCRD My favorite is the top fold card. Taylored Expressions does have a variety pack of colors but that is currently out of stock. It was out of stock when I was stopped in April too. They did not know when it would be restock. I know they are moving mid June so it could be possible they will restock once they get moved.

Cardstock Warehouse Pop-Tone is very smooth - about the same or the barest bit less than Neenah Classic Crest? I was having to close my eyes and really pay attention to tell the difference in smoothness, if there is any. Stamps well. Foundation is smooth too. I like an off white they called recycled, which is not recycled, and a couple of their "barely" colors, like barely gray, barely pink and barely green, which is like if you put one drop of light pink or green or gray paint in a quart of white paint. If these were Benjamin Moore paint colors they'd be included in their off whites collection with undertones of pink, green or gray. Colorplan. I don't have a vocabulary for describing paper, so you'd be better off calling them, but Colorplan isn't as smooth, though it's certainly stampable. It has a richness, not exactly a texture, but there's something... and it's not mottled at all but if you tilt some of the colors (I have a chain deck) you can see the barest bit of variation (not of color) because of the not-a-texture. I might buy three of the four grays because they look so neat together. If you're into browns, bitter chocolate is a good alternative to black. I have more Stardream than anything. It's an extremely subtle pearlescent or metallic. The opposite of in your face. In certain lights you have to turn it to catch the light to see it. Their specialty papers are terrific. There's a lot of good paper out there. If you're in the SCT event you'll get some from a few other companies. I liked some better than others. I haven't signed up yet since I couldn't make the cards in March and still have some from October. If I complete the ones I like I'll sign up. ETA In another thread Paper Trey Ink's CS is mentioned. I bought sample sets and agree it’s nice. The only issue I had was that a photocopied sheet was included that gave color names wasn’t true to color and I had trouble figuring out which color was which after I’d used some. I should have lightly written the names or a color code on them.

I don’t care for Stamp Market cardstock. I feel it’s almost too speckled.
Concord and 9th, Hero Arts or Lawn Fawn are my favorites for packs.
Bazzill makes a smooth cardstock. Joanne’s and the Redmond Ben Franklin carry it by the sheet. I miss the old store in Kent that had an amazing cardstock selection.

I would agree with the porous/pulpier description of Stamp Market paper. The best comparison I can come up with for it is that the texture is like construction paper, but much heavier and better quality. It's not an exact comparison of course, but it's the best I can come up! I really like Papertrey cardstock because of the value. And many companies sell sampler packs, which can be a great way to get a sense of their colors. (On a slight tangent, I wish companies would truly sell a sampler pack of one of EACH color. I buy sampler packs because I want to have swatches for future projects and to see what the texture/quality is like. I hate sampler packs that have 2-3 of some colors, but I might be a total weirdo.)

I personally love Gina k, lawn fawn, and taylored expressions cardstock. I like cardstock with matching envelopes and ink and both Gina k and taylored expressions have that. All 3 are 100 gsm. Nice thick solid core.

I think you meant to say 100 lb since 100 gsm is copy paper weight. This reminded me someone pm’d me about why I said different cardstocks with the same weight (lbs) could have very different thicknesses. I can’t explain the science behind it, though I’ve read it. I just know the gsms of CS I like, so if I want to try a new CS I’ll find out if its gsm is close to it. My version of GSM for Dummies (me). I think the first 5 minutes of JM’s video has a great visual and explanation. youtu.be/zixSptFRwQw

@michy I was thinking more about your question about stamping on colored CS. And no, I don’t buy 12x12 but have some. If a color or texture I wanted only came in 12x12 I’d buy it. Here’s the thing - many many companies make colored CS that’s a good quality. I have CS from many companies and you can stamp on all of them. I used the cheapest smooth packs of colored CS at Michaels once for Halloween trick-or-treat boxes and stamped on the orange - perfect. (Too flimsy for bases.) So colored CS is more often used as a base, with layer(s) on top or for die cutting. Like wendifful said “And many companies sell sampler packs, which can be a great way to get a sense of their colors.” It’s more about color - and weight - than stampability. You also mentioned 110 or 80 lb. Neenah as weights you’d be happy with. I don’t think 80 lb/216 gsm Neenah works that well as a base if adding layer(s) and die cuts. Then there’s a big difference between front and back, so standing the card up may not work and the back can seem flimsy in comparison. Caveat: I’ve been brainwashed by picky instructors, and maybe I wouldn’t think about it/notice otherwise. I certainly have loved every card I’ve ever received; weight isn’t in my brain. But I want to send substantial cards unless it’s a little insert. Most of the time I add a white or cream piece of paper to the inside to write on, adhered at the top only with double sided tape. Resume paper is a nice quality.

This might be too late, but...
I love, love, love Lawn Fawn, GinaK and Taylored Expressions cardstock. TE is new-ish to me since the last Crop & Create. I loved the colors of her card samples so I bought those inks and matching cardstock. I also like and use My Favorite Things cardstock. These are all 100# cardstocks.
For certain colors - I think the GinaK Red Velvet is the perfect red. Hero Arts Pitch Black is the darkest black I've found. Sadly I'm out and it's out of stock at HA. And the LF Pixie Dust is a good white glitter cardstock that you can add color to using a blending brush.
My suggestion is to check out cardstocks for whatever company inks you own, so they match.

Most well known cardmakers I watch on youtube/blogs don’t match cardstock and inks, and none of my instructors over the years have ever done it. Of course Stampin’ Up pushes it heavily ($$$) and some people love matching inks and CS. It’s absolutely fine to do so, but to newer card makers I’d say it’s also absolutely not necessary.
There’s no CS to match Distress Oxides, Ranger Archival, Versafine Clair and so many other wonderful inks used for cards.
OTOH it was fun using C&9th CS with their inks when they were included for an SCT event. I just wouldn’t want to limit myself.

I've used Stampin' Up! card stock for years but recently started using Spellbinders and just love it. I really like the colours, it's a beautiful range.
I also like The Stamp Market card stock, but as everyone else said, it's very different from the rest. I like it for layering die cuts, I wouldn't use it for card bases.
I have a sampler pack of Simon Says Stamp, and one of Hero Arts, and they're both great, too. You can't go wrong with any of them.
