They were talking about this on CNN yesterday I think. I watched the girls during that I time and it made me laugh. Those girls were typically teenagers-forget for a moment that their father is the president-but that he is just plain old dad, making corny jokes and talking about a turkey like it is a big deal. They grimaced, and rolled their eyes and you could hear them thinking "He is SUCH a dork." It was so normal that it was refreshing. They were just teenagers, who were reacting to their dad. The staffer's comment was just not right. These kids are just kids, and didn't deserve to be targeted the way they were. It baffles me when moments of innocence are turned in politics used to bash the other side. Exactly this - I did LOL b/c it was just typical teen!

I was expecting to see a crotch-grazing miniskirt with her bar comment, instead of the perfectly appropriate outfits they were wearing. What a hateful person to attack those girls like that.

I can't get over the fact she's a communications director.

The staffer comes across as a catty "mean girl."
I had to laugh at her response that "after talking with her parents and praying to G-d, that she decided what she said was wrong." (Not an exact quote) Way to try to hit important platform issues (family & religion) in covering her ass! She appeared desperate to salvage whatever she could of her political career, when surprisingly (to her) her comments were met by outrage even by her own party, rather than high fives.
Anyone who has inhabited the same house with their own teenagers has seen the exact expressions on their kids' faces. Usually daily. If there is poetic justice in the world, when she has teens of her own, they will be excessively annoyed by her.

I agree. They looked miserable. Heck, I would have looked miserable at that foolish event. I don't know who dreamed up "pardon the turkey" but that person should have had their head examined. I roll my eyes every year when the "press event" is put before us. yuck..... I agree! Total nonsense.

Also, regarding Letterman taking about Bristol Palin, etc...I don't like when anyone does it (rips apart the kids), but it's a lot different when it's a comedian or entertainer doing it rather than a spokesperson for a political party.
ETA: I meant the professional ramifications of doing so, not the ethics of it all. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

I can't help but wonder what this woman's audience was *before* the comments. Had the media not jumped on this, I would have no clue who she is or that she even said these things.
It's interesting what the media chooses to condemn or let pass.

I have two, one boy who wore that look perpetually, and one of the most good-natured kids you will ever meet...and even he wears that expression at least once a day. Sometimes I say things like "the twitter" or "ask the google" just to see how quickly I can get the eyeroll.

Girls wear short skirts. My mother wore really short skirts to church back in the 70s because that is what was worn then. Their clothes are fine. I have kids that age. It's how they dress. I'd like to see video of the whole turkey pardoning ceremony because I'm sure it was corny and ridiculous because he was pardoning a great big turkey. It's not like they rolled their eyes during the State of the Union. This staffer was being bitchy.

What Letterman said on his show to millions was disgusting.

Having been the victim of many a corny joke made by my dad, I completely understand the Obama girls' reaction. I didn't have a gazillion news cameras focused on me when I rolled my eyes at my father, though.
What this woman said was completely ridiculous. She did the right thing by resigning.
Politicians' families, especially underage ones, should be off limits. I don't understand why people don't get that. Of all the heinous things said by conservatives or liberals about the kids of public figures, my vote for the worst goes to Bill Maher's comments about Sarah Palin's son Trig. Unconscionable.

Well Malia's skirt wouldn't make the dress code for our high school, but she's not in a school, much less our school. So the point would be moot. I don't think it's a news worthy issue. I'm sorry some jerk made it a news issue. I don't care what she's wearing, I have my own teen's clothing to monitor. Some people just have no filter. Geez. How stupid!
Poor kids, I feel sorry for any politicians children. I'm sure my DD would just freak out if any one of my or my DH''s colleagues or business rivals publicly commented on her attire. Then I'd be pissed off. Who does that kind of thing?

It's not like they rolled their eyes during the State of the Union. I would even give them a pass for that too. I know a lot of eye rolling went on with that, even from adults.

I wish they'd have shown a little more enthusiasm, to be honest. Just a smile? Would it have killed them? Someone should've prepped them a little bit and told them to just suck it up for what - 15 minutes?
All that being said, what that staffer said was WAAAAAAAY out of line. Even if you're thinking those things you don't say them out loud, not publicly and not when you are on the staff of a GOP politician. Or any politician, for that matter.

I watched the video and saw a bit of eye rolling at not so funny jokes and being offered to pet a turkey. They didn't look miserable and I don't think their skater dresses were too short. My opinion exactly. I think they were just kind of making fun of their dad's bad jokes. Skirts were cute and fine. That woman making the comments needs a brainiotomy.

Oh wow I didn't notice how short the girls skirts were, but yeah you never post that on facebook when you work for a Congressman! She sounds like she wants to be Ann Coulter, why so angry?

We talked about the girls expressions over Thanksgiving dinner. To current teen parents their looks were priceless!
I'm appalled by what the staffer wrote. But it's indicative of a bigger problem and I hope others learn to keep their "clever" (not) opinions to themselves.

I just watched the video and the girls are sming and acting engaged. There were brief moments of eye rolls but nothing out of the ordinary.
What I have found worse than the original comments were the comments on various sites. I was appalled at what I read on hot air this morning.

Her comments were not appropriate. She should know better. What an idiot.
That being said I would not let my daughter wear those skirts. They were a little short. If I was the president or presidents wife I would make sure that my children were dressed a little more conservative because people do talk. It's not right and you shouldn't have to but I would just choose a safer option. It's sad that we have to worry about that stuff.
When my daughter goes off with my mother I make sure her shorts or dresses are a little longer and that nothing is too tight. If they are going to pool or beach with her I will ask lillie to wear a tankini or one piece. My mom is very conservative.
I kinda see it the same way. As I knew they would be in spotlight I'd have chosen something else. While cute I thought they were a tad short even though they had on tights/leggings. I
Letterman and all of them need to back off the kids. They are such pretty girls. I hate that people mess with them. My teens would have been eye rolling too but like a previous poster said if they are going to make them go to events they need to be told grin and bear it for 5 min although I didn't think they looked that bored. I would and do get on to mine for eye rolling at certain functions and who knows maybe they were told to smile and fake it and maybe they got fussed at afterwards.

There are also plenty of right-wing media people who have survived making unkind comments about Democratic politicians' children. It's ugly no matter who does it. But there's also a difference between media people like David Letterman and Glenn Beck (read the article in the OP), and someone who speaks for a Republican politician or the Republican party itself. We will have to agree to disagree. Someone like Letterman who is on TV 5 nights a week with millions of people watching should not be making fun of presidential or candidate's children or anyone elses children for that matter. Letterman probably has a much bigger voice than the lady who made the comments about the Obama girls. There are probably very few, if any, people on the board who even knew who she was until she acted stupid. And, yes, it is ugly no matter who does it and what their political affiliation is. It's not a matter of you and me agreeing or not. It's just reality. When was the last time you heard of a celebrity media figure losing his or her job over making fun of a public figure's kids? Oh yeah, never. Not David Letterman, not Glenn Beck, not Ann Coulter. They just have more latitude than someone in public service or politics. I didn't say it was right, it's just the way it is. I don't like it either.

I am of the opinion that no skirt is too short on a fit teenager, as long as she is wearing opaque tights or leggings underneath. If her private parts aren't showing, it's no one else's business.
