Missing messages: Many of the United States Secret Service’s text messages sent on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, 2021, were deleted after a Department of Homeland Security watchdog asked for them, the DHS inspector general informed Congress through a letter dated Wednesday and obtained by POLITICO. The department said the messages were lost as part of a “device-replacement” program, according to the watchdog.

Responses: A spokesperson for the House Homeland Security Committee confirmed the panel had received the letter from Inspector General Joseph Cuffari and would be briefed on it. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee also received the letter.

Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesperson, said in a tweet the agency took “strong issue with these categorically false claims” addressed in the letter and would respond more soon.

Carol Leonnig was just on MSNBC with Madho Hassan talking about the USSS text/phone issue.

A year or two before Jan 2021 USSS had decided to replace their phone system and assorted other equipment to improve communication for employees to be able to talk to each other etc . Yes, they are supposed to download their phone regularly because it is government business.

Anyway by the end of January when the OIG requested the texts etc, about a third of the phones had been changed over to the new system. And of course many of the phones were not downloaded.. the numbers can be found in invoices etc but not the content of texts..

THIS may be the answer..

MSNBC Lawrence O'Donnell is now saying the erasure of the texts was deliberate... He is saying that those texts are/could be the most important messages in our country's history!!

That could fit with the above noted meeting,..

"We reported here that CBP, Customs and Border Protection, were actually uniformed and armed, ready to go but kept waiting in the basement of the Reagan Building during the insurrection that was happening just blocks away."

"The hearing, scheduled for 8 p.m. July 21, is expected to give a detailed account of how Mr. Trump resisted multiple entreaties from staffers, lawyers and even his own family to call off the attack, which raged for hours in the early afternoon of Jan. 6, 2021."

NPR's Deirdre Walsh reports Chairman Thompson, citing the "flow of new info coming into [the] panel," Monday evening announced the Committee is changing its plans and will issue a "scaled-down" report of its findings in the fall, with its final report to be issued by the end of the year.

Axios' Andrew Solender notes the scaled-down report will likely be in September and adds that Chairman Thompson says the Committee will hold a hearing on both the scaled-down report and its final report.

GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham has agreed to abide by a subpoena and appear before a Georgia grand jury investigating election meddling in the state, CNBC reports.

I think this is an excellent point. Trump had a responsibility to protect the Capitol and he failed miserably.

The committee set out to to tell the complete story of Jan. 6 to provide a definitive historical account and assist in formulating suggestions to prevent a repeat in future elections. This effort is also critical for the public and the Republican Party to understand the depth of Trump’s betrayal and his egregious refusal to perform his duties as commander in chief.
If Trump, as president, failed to activate the armed services during a foreign attack on our homeland — or worse, put out tweets praising the attackers — it would be tantamount to treason. In the face of domestic terrorism, his obligation to act was no less clear.

Trump’s refusal to intervene, even as he was watching the violence play out on his television, is powerful evidence that he was seeking to creating havoc and to disrupt the congressional proceedings. His inaction suggests that when all other nonviolent, illegal means failed, he was willing to use the mob to accomplish his ends.

If the Jan. 6 committee’s hearing on Thursday is anything like its seven previous hearings, viewers should be prepared to learn just how deplorable Trump’s conduct truly was — and how solid the potential criminal case against him is.

During a discussion about the Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) being subpoenaed by the Fulton County District Attorney, former Homeland Security Department chief of staff Miles Taylor suggested that allies of Donald Trump should consider getting lawyers if they haven't already.

Hice, a firm "states rights" advocate, is begging that the grand jury be moved from the state to the federal court system. The case, however, involves the violation of state election laws.
