Does anyone have a good refried beans recipe? I've done some googling, but I'd like a tried and true recipe.
TIA!

Yes please! I made carne asada last night and wished I had a good refried beans recipe to go with it.

Really good refried beans use lard. A ton of it. So that means I just don’t make good refried beans. I just can’t do it. Every time we are at a restaurant and the beans are delicious, I have to remind myself that it’s a treat. Though I am also curious if oh yvonne has a good recipe.

Really good refried beans use lard. A ton of it A couple tablespoons - which I really don't consider a ton You can also use really light olive oil too. I cheat and use canned pinto beans. Sometimes I use lard, but sometimes bacon drippings. I dice up some onion and cook in the fat until translucent, then add some minced garlic and cumin, salt & pepper. I save the bean liquid and add it back in. I might add a little water too, if it is too dry. I like to use my immersion blender to make them smooth. I hope Oh Yvonne posts how she does it - her recipes and cooking tips are the best!

I can't make beans worth a crap. Every once in a while I will use bacon grease, but even those are not so great sometimes.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=HbuAaxH1WqsSimply Mama Cooks has a good recipe. You can also find her recipe for charro beans to use for the refried beans. She uses 2 tbsp lard.

I adapted her recipe for black beans. While I am frying my black beans, I sprinkle in dried onion and garlic powder as well as kosher salt.

I have made Pioneer Woman's refried beans and they were DELISH! She uses butter instead of lard but also bacon.

This is what I do but where you add extra water if they are dry, I add a little beef broth (though I am not sure why instead of using water).

It’s like half a cup of lard to a shallow pan of beans (maybe just 2 cups of beans). They taste great, but it’s definitely more fat then I like to eat at one time.

I hope Oh Yvonne posts how she does it - her recipes and cooking tips are the best! I love signing on to get tagged to talk about food, lol! Okay so here is our family recipe and everyone loves them, my mom's beans: 1 can of Rosarita Refried beans 1 can of WHOLE Sun Vista brand pinto beans (actually any good brand will do) the two cans should be the same size (equal ratio) In a cast iron skillet pour in bacon drippings. (we never use lard for no reason other than bacon grease is always on hand) Pour in the whole beans first, liquid and all, lightly fry up and mash lightly then add the can of Rosarita and mash together add a dash of milk to add to a creamier consistency add some Jack cheese (or whatever) It normally doesn't need anything else, just heat until bubbly and creamy and good (eta...salt. taste your beans and add salt if needed but usually canned beans are already salted) We keep our beans plain and simple without added onions or seasoning. Usually you are eating beans with other foods that are highly seasoned/spiced so the beans are a nice accompaniment on the side. Sometimes I do add some pickled jalapeno juice to the beans for added kick. And I know someone from Mexico City that uses parmesan cheese exclusively in his beans and they are good too. Oh, and I know lots of people will shun canned beans but who has time to make beans from scratch? Plus, America's Test Kitchen did a test and found that canned beans are actually FRESHER than cooked whole because the canned beans use very fresh beans, and bags of uncooked beans you buy at the store are often old already. So hopefully that makes you feel better about using canned.

So hopefully that makes you feel better about using canned. When I have time, I doctor up my baked beans, but hadnt really thought to do that with refried beans! I often mix 1/2-3/4 of a can of refried beans into taco meat. It started when I was trying to get my family to increase their fiber intake and now we all prefer tacos that way. (I use fat free La Preferida, but I bet lard or bacon grease is way better tasting!)

littlemama, you don't need a lot of bacon grease, but a dollop with some of the little bits adds so much flavor. Now I want beans.

oh wow! I had no idea that existed! I searched on the Walmart locator for stores by me and none carry it. That's a great invention I actually prefer bacon grease over lard. I'm going to keep an eye out for that!

I'm going to keep an eye out for that! My Kroger carries a similar product in a glass jar if you have Krogers/Ralphs or any of their other stores. It’s with all the cooking oils.

I make the no fried refried beans in my instant pot. Love them. I use a recipe from all recipes.
Sauté onion diced with minced garlic Add beans Add broth Add 1 small tin hot peppers Add cumin, chilli powder, salt and pepper. Turn instant pot on for 45 min.
When I didn’t have an instant pot I used my crock pot. I mash half.
I often use black beans but pinto works too.
