Let's talk about bacon for a minute.
I am not normally a big bacon eater. But lately I have been really into making turkey club sandwiches for lunch. I hate bacon that is super fatty so before cooking it I find myself trimming off and throwing away so much fat that it amounts to around 1/3 of the package. I got to thinking that maybe I need to try other brands. I have been buying Hormel Black Label thick cut bacon. What is your favorite bacon? Is there a bacon out there I should try that is less fat and more meat?

IMO you either need to cook the bacon longer, which gives the fat more of a crispy texture, or else buy turkey bacon.

Thank you. I have bacon to cook tomorrow. I am taking this as a happy reminder.

I just solve the problem by buying the precooked Costco bacon and then microwaving the hell out of it until it’s really crispy. It’s perfect every time doing it that way. I hate limp, soggy, fatty bacon regardless of how thickly cut it is.

I’m that person who has to inspect every single pack of bacon in the store, to make sure I buy the leanest pack. I like to get the center cut pack for hamburgers and sandwiches.

I am sure that we had a similar thread about bacon recently. I'm not saying that as a dig at you for posting this, because I am all for talking about bacon every week haha!! I remember that someone else mentioned that they didn't like the fatty bacon and were looking for a different cut/brand. Which at the time I thought was weird/funny, because growing up in Australia we only had boring bacon with hardly any fat on it. Then when American-style streaky bacon with LOTS of juicy fat started appearing in our supermarkets, I was so excited!! If I am using bacon for a recipe and I don't want the lovely crispy fat, I will always buy shortcut bacon. It's just the roundish bit and has barely any fat. And what little fat there is, is easy to pull off. ETA: This is the thread I was talking about. It was actually about favourite brunch recipes, and went off onto a bit of a bacon tangent. I posted a picture of shortcut bacon on the thread.

I do cook my bacon to be super crispy because I feel like it helps more of the fat cook out. I hadn't thought of turkey bacon, that's a good idea.

Hijack ahead: Many years ago, Mom was shopping with my intellectually disabled brother. She was opening the little flaps on the back of the bacon packages to look for a “good one.” DB looked to see if anyone one was watching and quietly said, “Stop that!” Mom picked up another package and peeked under the flap, and said a little louder (and with more urgency), “Mom, stop that!” She said something to let him know it was okay, but he wasn’t buying it LOL. The next time she lifted a flap, he smacked her fingers and said, “(Mom’s first name), I told you to stop it!” Poor guy was so embarrassed by her “bad” behavior LOL, and if he hadn’t been in a wheelchair, I’m sure he would have been trying to drag her out of the store. I think of that story every time I check under the bacon flaps, although some brands just have little windows, no flaps.

I usually buy precooked bacon because I’m lazy like that (and I hate cleaning up after bacon), but when I do use regular bacon, I prefer the center cut strips.

OP - I check the back window on bacon packages to get the most lean one I can. The other thing that helps is to bake the bacon in the oven.

Cooks illustrated did a test awhile ago and their best pre packaged pick was Oscar Mayer thick cut.
I agree that you need to cook it more to crisp the fat. I would highly highly recommend baking it. It is the easiest way to cook bacon perfectly.
Another way for easy bacon, My parents get the Kirkland partially cooked bacon at Costco and it doesn’t take long to crisp in a pan and it doesn’t seem very fatty.
The less cooked it is the fattier it will seem.
I definitely like strip bacon better than Canadian bacon, and for a turkey club I would definitely pick strip bacon. 😄
And I think bacon is one of my favorite subjects ever. Hahaha

Cook it longer in the oven to make it crispy. Club sandwiches need crispy bacon!
Precooked bacon (fakin' bacon in our house) is an ok substitute for certain things, but for a club sandwich, Id use regular bacon.

I prefer the taste of real bacon, preferably a thick cut hickory smoked bacon, but I hate the fat. I don't eat bacon very often, so I compromise and use turkey bacon. It has a somewhat similar taste, and when it is buried in the other ingredients in a BLT, I can make it work without the worry about how unhealthy it is.

Aldi brand Appleton Farms Premium sliced bacon is the best that I have found. Just the right blend of lean and fat. And I agree that baking it is better than frying it.

I’m another fan of baking bacon. I will usually bake the whole package on a cookie sheet and then save whatever is leftover in a ziploc in the fridge. I then reheat if I need it hot in the microwave. But, for sandwiches and crumbled in salads, cold is fine.

We buy the precooked bacon at Costco, but I will either fry it a bit or use the toaster oven to crisp it up. In the past I just didn't buy bacon due to the mess when cooking.

That picture of “streaky bacon” is perfect. I would be excited to open a package and have it look like that! I cook it to a chewy texture, we don’t like crispy bacon. We like it “bendy.”

I get Butcher Box no sugar bacon but it is the last package I reach for. Don't laugh but I buy the Walmart brand bacon. I make sure it is the "original" type of slices. I don't check for leanness. I put parchment paper on a sheet pan and line it with bacon. Throw it in the oven and THEN turn the oven on to 395. I cook it until I smell it. Then I check. I cook until it is crispy and a deep brown. I don't know, about 15-20 minutes? Perfect for breakfast or sandwiches every time!

I buy Wright brand thick cut bacon, and I bake it on a sheet pan in the oven. I started buying Wright also. Even the regular cut seems thicker and leaner to me, although a bit more narrow.

I LOVE fatty bacon. But only when it is cooked until it is crispy. I hate when I order something with bacon in a restaurant and the bacon is all floppy and gross. I want to say, "Cook the damn bacon!" LOL

I haven’t eaten bacon in a long time, but I never liked turkey bacon. I do really like the Morningstar “bacon” though. I use it for sandwiches a lot. I know it is not what you are looking for, but it might be worth a shot. It gets very crispy!
