Hi Peas! Hubby came home from a checkup and his doctor has prescribed blood pressure medication and orders to eat a low sodium diet. I do add salt to my cooking and am looking for a sodium replacement that isn’t bland. TIA for any ideas and advice.

I cook low sodium for my son since he’s still little and his kidneys can’t handle too much salt. I use Mrs Dash salt free seasonings to season his food! He seems to like it.

cook from scratch (restaurant food and prepared/processed foods are all high sodium), frozen or fresh vegetables rather than canned, using more spices will add flavour without adding as much sodium, watch for sodas if he drinks them
And have him ask for a dietician referral - they should be able to help him (and you) come up with some good ideas also.

Totally get him an appt with a dietician! *Added salt* is only one component of lowering sodium intake. Salt is added to just about EVERYthing. I had to go on BP medication last year, so I'm very vigilant. I have never cared for the taste of salt, and about the only thing I add it to are eggs or potatoes, both of which I eat infrequently. Any sodium problem I have is sneaking in on processed and pre-made foods.

But I will still use bottled spaghetti sauce and things like bottled marinades and packaged soup mixes to add to roasts. No more of that. Thanks for the advice!

It may not be your cooking as much as processed foods he is eating. He needs to keep a food journal to really see where the sodium is coming from. Canned foods and fast foods are loaded with sodium.

You can use salt-free spice mixes to add to your roasts -- something like za'atar is delicious. Marinades are super easy to make, also. It will take some research and practice, but once you have it down it will become easy peasy.
