Some may recall the airline problems (Alaska) I had back in April when I went back east for a few days. Flight out was 3 hours late departing, and flight back was cancelled the day before it was to take off. So, after that and all the other airline problems going on right now, I thought I'd stay away from planes this summer.
Planned a short trip away to celebrate a friend's birthday. Traveling by boat to Victoria BC, so we thought we'd be good. Today, the boat trip was cancelled due to a lack of crew.
Feeling slightly jinxed here. TG summer in Seattle is (usually) a lovely time to stay put.
Anyone else doubly jinxed like this lately?

That bites. I'm itching to travel, but all of the flight cancellations have me wiggling. I think we will stick to car trips for awhile yet.

Not me. I flew to AZ in November and to Seattle a few weeks ago and had the best flights ever.

I’m currently in Delaware on the third leg of a 10 state road trip.
Everything has been great so far. Although, we just left a Hilton with the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever slept in, so I’m a bit worried the next few hotels will be a let down.

I traveled Memorial Day weekend to a wedding. Our morning flight was canceled without any notifications. DH and I were rebooked on different flights 6 hours later without any notifications. Finally got us on a direct flight together that was only 4 hours later. Got stuck in the last row two middle seats in a 757. Ugh. Made it to the family BBQ only an hour late (we left the house at 7am and arrived in Atlanta at 7pm) and on our way back to the hotel hit a deer in DD's car. Fortunately nobody got hurt (including the deer) and minimal damage to her car. Five of us from the party ended up with very very bad colds (I'm still hacking up a lung 2 weeks later) but none tested positive for covid.
So yeah.

Can you take 2 ferries ending with the ferry from Port Angeles across? We went that way when we went to Victoria.

So sorry that you are hitting roadblocks with everything you plan! I am hearing so many stories like this. It's making me glad that I decided instead to move out of the front half of my house, do a little remodel then repaint all the walls/ceilings/cabinetry and refinish all the wood floors. It's beginning to sound less stressful! Fingers crossed that by Oct/Nov travel will be in a better place and I can do something then!

My 17yo leaves in less than 40 hours for a school trip to Germany/Austria/Switzerland...I hope the worst is behind us. We signed his up for the trip in December 2019 for a March 2021 trip, but in September 2020 it was postponed until March 2022. Then in January it was postponed until June which meant instead of going over Spring Break when nothing is going on, he'd be gone for almost 2 weeks of baseball season (and he's one of the best players on the team). He decided to still go on the trip and just an hour ago learned that his Covid test was negative...oh happy day!!!
I worry when I hear about all of these delays since it's a group of 25 kids and 4 chaperones, but thankfully the teacher has done this trip several times and the rest of the chaperones are very experienced travelers. I am thankful that we were able to keep the original 2019 pricing because I can't image how much the tickets would be now!

What a bummer! We had terrible luck in January and March with multiple flights cancelled and late - including a last minute scramble to try and find a hotel that would take my 18 year old as he missed his connection. We had absolute golden luck on our trip to Europe in mid-May including an unexpected upgrade - so hope your luck is turning as well.

well crap, sorry Michy that sucks big time.
IDK what we are going to do this summer. I can't seem to get it together to even try to plan something. Between the price of gas and IDK about all your areas but COVID is spiking again here.
I want to go back to 1990s again. The 2k is for shit.

When we arrived in Belfast for our flight to SFO via London, they had our names in the computer but no e-ticket attached. Thankfully the tour director's flight was cancelled ~ she was on her way home to England to see her husband before she headed out for her next tour group in Greece ~ so she was still at the airport to help us navigate. Took an hour and 15 minutes to get it straitened out so we barely made the flight.
The 2nd to the last day in Ireland, one woman in our group tested positive. The rest of us (27) were negative. Two days after we got home, 4 more people tested positive. The gal we left in Ireland had to stay in Belfast from the 19th until the 31st. By herself. In her room.

I just returned from an Alaskan cruise. We had a 2 hr delay flying out to Vancouver due to a mechanical issue, but other than that it was awesome. Seamless and no other issues.

Our night trip involving a flight is in December. My hope is that things will settle down at that point. I don't want anything to mar my feelings about Alaska Air, but that last two trips were a bit dodgy.
Michy, I'm sorry the travel vibes aren't working out. I don't blame you for feeling jinxed. There's always a lovely stay on Whidbey Island...although with all the ferry shenanigans, getting stuck in a ghastly summer ferry line would not be a surprise!

I am sorry! That sucks. I have been reading about the ferry issues (I think one of the ferries to Victoria shut down completely?). We went to Whidbey a few weeks ago and I think they were only running one boat for staffing reasons :/.
We went to Ashland last week and had a delayed flight back, but I literally watched the mechanic working on the plane, so I think that they were telling the truth when they said "mechanical issues."
I am in SF with two of my kids right now and we had an easy flight down; everything is a lot less crowded than it should be, and I am wondering what is going on.

Well I just booked my flights to Asheville (Charlotte airport) and had to pay $900 for mine, plus $550 (one way!) for my kid. Not happy that it was so expensive:( Sorry about your ferry Eta - I have a huge credit on Alaska airlines that I need to use this summer - will likely head to Seattle to enjoy your beautiful summer!

I’m honestly thinking of emailing Hilton customer service and seeing if they can tell me anything about it. We’re at a very cool Marriott tonight. The room is HUGE (it has 4 rooms), but I haven’t tried the bed yet. Fingers crossed.

DD just spent a week in NYC to meet up with friends from the US and Mexico. She made it there safely but super long travel days for what should have been about a 4 or 5 hour trip. Her travel days went like delay, delay, no hope of catching connection, cancellation, late flight to a totally different arrival airport leaving her without planned transport, etc.
I’m no longer afraid of Covid but will be choosing to vacation closer to home with my own vehicle for a while yet.

So sorry Michy! I landed at Pearson in Toronto today. The only hard part of my trip was the alarm going off at 3 a.m. after less than 4 hours of sleep. BUT, when we deplaned, the line for Customs was ENORMOUS! I guess there's a former pro athlete (hockey player?) who posted a video rant about the situation.

My ds & ddil got late night notice cancelling their early morning flight to Calgary to connect with a flight for California. Ended up taking a ferry to Vancouver then flying direct to CA from there. Then returning home, ddil's flight from SanFran was so delayed that ddil missed her connection, ended up arriving home at 2:00AM instead of the scheduled 7:00PM. When I was returning from the island to Alberta, my flight was delayed twice and then when we arrived we spent 30 minutes on the tarmac while they rounded up a crew to disembark the plane. Several people on my flight missed their connections--one of them a young fellow who had already been diverted from Vancouver to Nanaimo overnight. All these incidents with WestJet, which used to be the best airline ever.

BC Ferries had to cancel even hour sailings so imagine the Seattle to Victoria boat is the same. (I didn’t name it but know it).

Well that is really disappointing for you! I was lucky. I flew from Minneapolis to Billings and back the last 2 weekends for DGD's graduation and party. I was really nervous about the first return trip due to weather. We took a detour around the storms with only a 20 minute delay. I call that a win!

Many people are complaining about the many issues there. I am lucky that I can use Hamilton (YHM) or Billy Bishop (YTZ) on Toronto Island for flights. Also, Buffalo is closer for USA domestic flights. I suppose that you could have flown to Detroit and taken a shuttle to London, as that might have been easier as far Canada Customs clearance. Enjoy your time in Ontario.

I am so sorry for those of you also experiencing travel problems. How frustrating!
We got everything set up to go the following week, even talked our hotel into the same rate they gave us for our original room. Then the people at the Clipper called back and the boat isn’t running those days either. Jinxed I tell you!
Trying to figure out if I want to continue planning a different trip I’m taking on my own in early October, or save it for fall 2023. The 64k question, will things be improved by then?!?
Fingers crossed for all of us for incident free travel soon!

What a pain! We're due a delayed (2020) special anniversary holiday later this year but watching the stream of news about various airlines cancelling 100s of flights at very short notice every few days, we're holding fire.
It sees the whole bloody world is short staffed!

Ugh, yes. My flight back home from Switzerland was cancelled two days before I left last month and then the new one was cancelled hours before my return. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Ugh, yes. My flight back home from Switzerland was cancelled two days before I left last month and then the new one was cancelled hours before my return. I'm not sure what the issue is. Some of the issues I have read: 1) lack of pilots because they were mostly laid off at the beginning on the pandemic, so the older ones retired and some found new careers. 2) Getting new pilots is difficult because they need a lot of training 3) Crew in general getting sick since they work in small metal tubes and no one is wearing masks anymore.
