DS graduates basic training in early August. We are flying into OK City several days before heading to Ft Sill. I have been to Ft Sill before, but would like some suggestions about where to eat in Ok City. We are staying near the airport just for ease of travel. Any not to be missed restaurants? Or other recommendations? Thanks!!

Go down to the Bricktown area. There is a canal down there and lots of things to see and restaurants to visit. The OKC memorial is close to Bricktown too.

First of all, I'd reconsider staying by the airport. I'd stay downtown or in Bricktown if I were you. There is a lot to see and do downtown, while there is not much to do out by the airport. I think voltagain 's suggestion of Cattleman's Steak House is a great recommendation if you want the quintessential OKC restaurant experience. It's not fancy, but it's good and has been around forever. Iron Star Urban Barbecue is a very popular barbecue restaurant. They offer other types of food as well. It's in an interesting old building and the rustic/industrial decor is nicely done. If anyone in your party is a vegan or vegetarian, they will love Picasso on Paseo. They have lots of delicious vegan options. They also have plenty of options for meat lovers. It's in the Paseo area which is the arts district, close to downtown. There are two good pizza options near downtown-Pizzeria Gusto and Hideaway Pizza. If you want any more specific types of recommendations, don't hesitate to ask.

We were in OKC in May and stayed in Bricktown. We found a great breakfast/brunch place called Kitchen No. 324. We loved the food. Hatch was also a great breakfast place.

There are two good pizza options near downtown-Pizzeria Gusto and Hideaway Pizza. Oh, my gosh! We LOVE Hideaway Pizza in Norman. Haven't been to the one downtown, but I'm sure they're similar. When we were visiting OKC regularly, we liked to meet friends at Zio's Kitchen. But that's been a few years. We always have to do Mazzio's buffet at some point because that's DH's hometown fave. And for fast food, we usually stop at least once at Taco Bueno because we don't have them here. Oh, and Braum's. I mean, it's not really a trip to OKC without a Braum's stop.

The Cowboy Museum and the First Americans Museum have a summer special of one $25 ticket covering both museums.
If your family is into athletics, Riversport near downtown might interest you.
Food suggestions would really vary depending on your preferences and price range. We have lots of good choices here, IMO.

The Cowboy Museums.
I would drive out to Pop's at night. The giant neon soda bottle is neat. We got there too late for dinner so we drove back out for lunch the next day.
Take tissue for the OKC Bombing Memorial. Very moving.

Many thanks! Now I have lots to sort thru to make decisions! I may rethink my hotel, but we'll see how far out we'll be. I will probably skip memorials--after 25 years as an army wife, I've shed more than a few tears and been to way too many funerals. Thank you!

I'm not familiar with the area, but just wanted to say, omg! I can't imagine doing basic in OK heat during the summer. Bless your son's heart! May he do well and thank him for wanting to defend our country.

If you end up staying in the Lawton area (since you may have family day and then come back early the next day for graduation), we stayed at the Apache Casino hotel which was nice with decent, reasonably priced food and drinks (nothing fancy or trendy, though). Pool was outdoors but had a nice surrounding patio area. DD came for a short bit and it was no problem to come directly into the hotel since obviously the gaming area was prohibited for her. We ate at Old Plantation in Medicine Park, and that was an area I wish we had a day without DD to explore. Her family day itinerary was iHop (make the mad dash after they are released since it's so popular with the soldiers), shop PSX, Mt. Scott, chill at the hotel, some ice cream place she had picked out and dinner in Medicine Park. We also explored a couple of the museums on base which DD liked with the artillery aspect. Not quite what you asked for, but thought I'd share My DD was at Ft. Sill for BCT and AIT last year June through October, heat was only an issue one time for her, but many of the soldiers had issues with it - hope all goes well for your DS!

BTW, are Whiskey Cake and Braums restaurants? Whiskey Cake is a restaurant. Braum’s is ice cream and burgers and small grocery store. All their dairy products are from their own cows and farms in Oklahoma.

There is only one Whiskey Cake location in OKC. It’s in front of Penn Square Mall, which is a nice place to shop, but a fairly long drive from the airport.

It was a very hot summer! 🥵we did PT at 5am to beat the heat, but still had to march all over the damn place during the day.

As a result, you could see the difference between our virtually unworn shirts and our pants that were going thru the laundry regularly. We ended up having to purchase new pants. Congratulations to your son pajamamama!

I remember one of my son's friends telling of "jungle" training when he was stationed there. Oh my!
Thank you for your service.

My soldier graduated during Covid so we didn't get to see him from when he shipped to Boot Camp (Sept) until he had been at his first duty station (Hawaii) for a few months. It was a long year, lol! No graduations for us!
