“There are no environmental reasons”. Except, unless the various nuclear power plants in the country have some sort of magic wand where they can just whisk the spent nuclear waste to New Mexico, then it’s coming by road or train. An environmental hazard waiting to happen. Talk about targets for terrorists. Disagree. Nuclear energy is a clean and cheap source of energy for lots of other parts of the world. The US is seriously behind on this, largely because of efforts on our own side to stop it. There are potential environmental issues with producing any kind of energy beyond rubbing two sticks together - we can do this as safely as anything else with proper environmental controls.

I think it involves the transportation of the nuclear waste, as well as the storage.

One might want to remember this come not only the mid-term elections but the Presidential election in 2024.
The unwritten law should be that if this country send men and women to fight in these wars then this country should take care of them when they come home.

If he did that, then he's really a beyond shitty human. Thats also not what Swallwell was commenting on. It was a reference to the abuse of wrestlers while also slapping at him for lying about the 10 year old. It was a reference to both — because he has lied about both. There’s not an if there - he did it — multiple athletes have stated he did it, OSUs investigation found the abuse happened and none of the coaches who knew responded appropriately and OSU has paid settlements to many of the athletes and some of their families as it led some of the athletes to commit suicide. Well, then he's beyond a shitty human. And if you're going to correct me and insist I get everything right and absolutely correct, then you should to. He did not lie, he jumped to an incorrect conclusion. Based on the evidence that was available, that was a possibility. It turned out not to be true and he should have just shut the hell up. But he's a shitty human, so there's that. When I said that's not what swallwell was commenting on, I was referring to the Jim Jordan text is what he commented to.

Swalwell made that comment in the tweet about Gym Jordan denying sexual assault. He has a habit of doing that for years. That's one reason to read beyond your limited choices.
We knew exactly what Swalwell said and why!!!

I understand that it's a swipe at him, it just doesn't track with reality *in the case of Jim Jordan's tweet*. That's all I'm saying.

And how many political posts before yesterday have I participated in the past 30, 60, 90 days? Posting about joe's incompetence every month or 2 is hardly incessant. I DO believe if the President can't get thru an event without being told to sit, stand, whatever, we have a problem. The more time passes the more it shows with him. I do see mental decline, although I didn't think he was all there when he was running to begin with.
You decide what's important to you, and I'll decide what's important to me.
When I first heard about his little note cards I thought that’s standard procedure for all “planned” events political and other staged events. And I asked my friend google. From Fox13 Seattle… link“The final bullet points read, "YOU thank participants" and "YOU depart."
A White House official tells Fox News that this is a very standard format used by politicians and government officials at public events. Hannah Hankins, a former White House communications official for then-President Barack Obama told Fox News he too used a similar format of notes during his presidency.” Canned lesson plans are often written with the format teacher says, students do. Not because we’re stupid and senile, but because it’s the clearest way to show the flow of the activity to someone who has 30 other things going on in her brain. As I imagine the president might. It does make me wonder, though, why we as a country love to elect old people to high office. Why specifically we had to nominate an old white man to satisfy the few swing voters who could be pulled away from the Trump dumpster fire. God willing there will be no talk of cognitive decline or adult diapers or weird hair combover choices for our next president. Let’s get back to calling her - who ever she might be - shrill, nasty, etc. Bitches get stuff done. Time to let the old men retire.

And in my world anything that can give people radiation sickness is far from clean. It’s not just environmental controls it’s also safety measures for the population. I just did some reading on the Fukushima Nuclear Plant. When they built the plant they took in consideration potential earthquake damage and because it was along the coast potential tsunami damage. The plant was built 30 feet above the coast line based on the previous tsunami waves were around 20 feet. When the earthquake hit it was 9.0, the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan. It shifted the main island 8 feet to the east. The tsunami waves were 37 to 50 feet high. My point is this, when you think you’ve addressed all potential safety issues in building the plant and then find out you didn’t after the fact and people die. And that’s my problem with nuclear energy. So we are going to disagree on this.

With regard to one of the above comments by Merge concerning nuclear fuel . I want to add my view as someone who lives near a nuclear plant and storage facility in the UK.
Storage of spent nuclear fuel should never be underestimated. Whilst the process of generating the electricity could be considered clean the spent fuel afterwards is not .
The half life of radioactive spent fuel can last hundreds even thousands of years or longer depending on the material.
For example plutonium is contained as part of the material in spent fuel ( not just uranium )and has a half life of tens of thousands of years.
It affects people living near storage areas now and for many future generations to come . This is why nuclear fuel is entirely different from alternative sources of power in environmental terms.
In our area birds have to be culled regularly from the open air ( non enclosed ) water ponds where high level spent fuel rods are stored there before processing so they do not contaminate the surrounding area with radioactivity.
All sorts of things need to be taken into consideration and lessons from past mistakes learned. Leaks into the water table underground can be a problem in areas with seismic shifts is just one example.
Some years ago my physicist husband briefly considered a work placement at the lab at Los Alamos in the US ( we decided not go in the end ) I was looking at the area online for houses etc and researching the area in general I noticed that the lab were talking about depositing spent radioactive waste in the desert in New Mexico at that point in time but I am not familiar with current arrangements.
Storage and transport of spent radioactive fuel can be a huge hazard and needs much consideration. Decisions made in 2022 could potentially have health implications beyond 3022 depending on the type of source stored.
Radioactive material that was dumped in our area from the 1950’s and 60’s is still being excavated and repackaged to make it safer for longer term storage.
The UK does not have a long term disposal facility yet because they are still trying to identify safe locations , my husband told me they have been looking for safe underground storage for at least 30 years and are still looking.
My husband has told me that he remembers that in the US the FBI raided , took over management and shut down a nuclear plant in Rocky Flats due to breach of environmental laws including nuclear waste .Here in the UK there have been breaches of environmental regulations and fines too.
No matter what country people are in radioactive issues need to be taken seriously.

7-24-2022 I always like to start the day with a good chuckle… From CNN. link“Donald Trump will return to Washington on July 26 to deliver what’s being billed as a major policy speech, CNN has learned, marking the former President’s first time back in the nation’s capital since he left office nearly a year and a half ago.” The idea that trump has the attention span to stick to the script and not start rambling on about all his perceived enemies and all the lies they are saying about him in January 6 Committee hearings is pretty funny. As far as “major policies “ the only policies he ever supported were those that directly benefited him. July 26 would be a good day for the January 6 Committee to hold a public hearing. But isn’t last one 7/21?

(because we all *know* he can't read / stay on script.) Insert HUGE eye roll here.

(because we all *know* he can't read / stay on script.) Insert HUGE eye roll here. Here you go. I just read the first paragraph. More from the CNN story… ”Trump will deliver remarks at the America First Agenda Summit, a conference hosted by one of the MAGA-aligned outside groups that formed after his presidency. His planned appearance will come less than a week after the House panel investigating the January 6 Capitol riot hosts its next public hearing on July 21 and as Trump continues to fume over coverage of the congressional investigation and his lack of allies on the committee. His speech is slated for the afternoon on the second day of the summit, and a person familiar with the planning said he will likely respond to recent revelations by the committee just as he did following its prime-time hearings last month while appearing at a conference for religious conservatives in Nashville.”

I know there are some anti abortion peas who said they didn't know the answer to difficult questions like the case of the 10 year old rape victim. Do you really want the Republican state legislatures making those decisions for families? Because that's what's happening and will continue to happen. And it was entirely predictable.

aj2hall I am not sure if this helps as there may be a difference in english / american terminology on nuclear plants. Hopefully this can explain my UK terminology. Nuclear Plant - a facility handling nuclear materials for various purposes ( which ties in with Rocky Flats and my description of it as a nuclear plant ) Nuclear Power Station - a facility generating electricity from nuclear power ( which would be more like the words you thought and called a power plant ) It was interesting to read the Denver Post article , thank you for putting it up.
