Has anyone else noticed that lately tv programs have the background music so loud that the dialog/speakers can't be heard? Or is it just me and my husband that have noticed it?
It seems to be a trend across the board…or something is wrong with both of our hearing. For instance, on crime shows, the narrator of the story will be narrating and the background music is so loud that I can barely hear what the narrator is saying. I'm not talking about movies but regular old tv shows of any type.
The other night I wanted to watch a PBS documentary. The background music would swell just as someone was being interviewed and it was difficult to hear what they were saying. There is loud music in scenes that don't even need music.
I get loud music during action scenes etc. but lately it has been blocking out the sound of any voices or dialog. I end up turning the channel.
I have no problems that I can detect with my hearing with anything other than these tv shows.
Is it just me?

No, it’s not just you. It’s really annoying and to make it worse my dad is hard of hearing so he turns the volume way up on the TV. If I want to hear all that music I’ll turn on the radio.

I have noticed that audio in general is all messed up in shows now. Take shows like Jimmy Fallon; if I listen to his monologue I have to turn up the TV to hear it, but then when he is interviewing a guest, I have to turn it down. Then they will hop to something else and I have to turn it up. I find it similar in shows like America's Got Talent, American Idol, and game shows. I sometimes watch Highway Patrol (1959s) late at night and their introduction and back ground music is so loud I think it will wake the dead and I'm also turning it up and down.

Commercials ALWAYS blare. I am used to that and I mute the tv during them. I won't let my husband have the clicker because he forgets to mute the commercials and the volume goes up by 300%.

I've noticed it too. I'm going to ask my cousin about it next time I see him. He does sound engineering for TV. I don't even watch TV but Jeremy does and I find all the sound annoying.

I saw a discussion about this once and somebody said something about settings on the TV. But I don't know how to access them or what they do.

Ugh, yes. Sports shows too. While sports are loud, when the guys in the booth (baseball) are talking I’d like to hear them. And the same with youtube videos with music playing while teaching card making or other paper crafts or art. I have to rewind repeatedly since my brain goes to music before words. So those channels are not followed even though I like them. Apparently youtube suggests putting background music on, but one size does not fit all. Entertainment is different than teaching.
And agree with @synder about volume varying a lot, commercials aside.

I can't stand that. We watch with closed caption sometimes because we can't hear the show. Even my kids, 19, 22 and 24 have trouble hearing. And I can't watch shows or movies that are so dark you can't tell what's on the screen. I can't watch ozark because it's like looking at a black screen on the tv. And I heard it was so good! We love the show The Middle. My husband said something about he loves that they don't have canned laughter. I can no longer watch shows with canned laughter ever since he said that.

That happens with my husband's movies too. They are so loud! I can't watch with him for that reason. He doesn't watch sports or the news with the volume up, but when he watches a movie, it's so loud. He says when they have a conversation it's normal volume, but when there is an action scene it's loud. I wish tvs had a setting where you can set a volume and it stays that volume.

It's not just you. Drives us nuts. We often watch with Closed Captioning on because of it.

That last season of Ozark was totally black screen.

Also why are so many scenes so dark or in the dark... Seems TV people don't live in the light!!

It's not just you. Drives us nuts. We often watch with Closed Captioning on because of it. We have been using it too. Along with music volume issues, too many times someone will run their words together in a sentence and/or mumble. We rewind to try to understand a couple of times and still can't, so we just turn on the captions.

Matt Czuchry (Conrad on The Resident) is the worst for mumbling, I can’t understand a word he’s saying.

Yes! And it really irritates the heck out of me. I do use closed captioning, but I can only tolerate the loud background for so long and I just switch shows. I watch for enjoyment, not to come away frustrated and cranky.

We had an old tv, flat screen, but probably 15 years old. I thought maybe it was something to do with old and new technology where the music drowns out the speaking. We have a new tv now and it's just as bad. I notice watching streaming shows on the tablet it's not like that but I like watching on the large tv.

It’s a problem on our tv. The dialog is so low, then the music comes on and it practically blows the speakers. I don’t have that issue when I watch on my laptop with earbuds. I’ve changed audio selections on our tv, but haven’t found a solution. Explanation: www.popsci.com/story/diy/movies-too-quiet-too-loud/?amp

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! For a few years now!! I know it's not my age or my hearing. I have very sensitive hearing. I detest anything on tv that is unnecessarily loud (commercials, background music or sound)... I wish that I could just raise the sound of talking and lower the background music!! I mute all commercials as it is.
Even with streaming, some services come with commercials. It sucks!!! I don't want my tv show or movie interrupted by annoying, loud music or commercials! I need to have a remote patented so that we could get relief from this type of annoyance!

I've tried EVERYTHING, including adjusting the settings on the remote for the TV, to no avail. You do need the remote to the TV and not the cable remote. Doesn't adjust the sound anyway!

When the songs are perfect for that episode, I don't mind them being a little loud. Some shows just know how to pick perfect songs. Others, not so much and the loudness is just annoying.

So weird - DH and I were just talking about this last night while struggling to watch a movie together.
It would be great if these smart tv's would have an option to quiet the background music/sound.

One of the worst shows, in my opinion, is Gray's Anatomy. They choose loud, distracting background songs and it is very difficult to hear the actor speaking sometimes. I get so frustrated trying to watch that show. Some shows aren't like that and the background music and songs fit perfectly.
