I voted color, but that is for card stock. I have a tower of plastic drawers and each drawer has its own color of CS. I don’t have a ton of patterned paper scraps, as I usually make a card to use up leftover scraps. So I have one drawer for PP and another for specialty paper (glitter, vellum, acetate sheets, etc)
I find that I always pull a drawer first before cutting into a full sheet of CS. 9/10 I already have what I need.

I'm sure you're shocked to learn I don't really organise my scraps either I do have them split into two drawers, one for cardstock, and one for everything else, but there's no real organisation beyond keeping specialty and things I'm fussy cutting on the tops of the pile. When I add new scraps I just lift up the top few sheets and shove the new scraps in.

There’s no real order to my scraps. I keep them in a drawer and at some point I separated the card stock and patterned paper but it’s all mixed up again.

by colour with PP and CS mixed - I have plastic envelopes that I cut the flap off that hold them

Cardstock is by color which is most of my scraps. Patterned paper is mostly by manufacturer.

I bought these poly letter sized envelopes link and sort by color. I use two for each color family, one for solids, one for PP. Christmas themed paper gets its own envelope. I used to use two 12x12 paper boxes to sort the solids and PP but I was spending too much time digging through them to find what I wanted so my scraps weren’t getting used.

I also voted "color" which is where the majority of my scraps (cs & pp) end up. However if I'm still working with a collection, I'll file the pp with that until I finish enough of the collection to "disband" it. I should say that's what I aspire to, knowing that I have a pile of scraps that need to be filed.

Primarily by colour (which I voted), but if I am working with a particular collection or papers with a strong theme, like hoopsfn, I keep the scraps with their friends--the 12x12 sheets, ephemera and extras.

I chose "Other". I'm a card maker not a scrapper. Colored cs scraps just go willy-nilly into a job ticket pocket (how I store colored cs). The only pp I use is 6x6 pads. Pads are stored in xl stamp pockets with their scraps.

I organize my paper by paper line- each collection has a 2 gallon plastic ziplock bag. I just throw my scraps in with my collection. Cardstock is organized by color. I have my 12x12 cardstock sorted by ROYGBIV and in front of each color is an envelop where I put the scraps. I do leave some cardstock scraps out on my table as I'm scrapping. I often use the small scraps of white on my pages, or I use scraps for scrap paper (writing the date of the photo, figuring out the middle letter of a title, etc.) or to block out areas when I stencil or splatter.
I do have a small bag of little pieces and a collection of branding strips. Every once in awhile I make a page using just those.

If it is part of a collection or pad, I keep them together. If not, I just have a baggie with scraps that I throw everything into, including both cardstock and pp. I tend to reach for scraps first so my bag is usually under control.

I organize by collection, so any scraps get stored with the collection until I am well and truly done with it. After that, if the scraps are big they get stored by colour. To be honest, I so rarely "kill" a collection that I don't have a ton of scraps floating around. Most are still stored with the collection.

like hoopsfn and grammadee - I do keep collection kit scraps with the collection kit until I'm done with the kit Me, too. Cardstock goes in a drawer by color family (whole sheets and scraps together).

I picked other because I don't really sort them at all. I throw them in a box and dig through it when I want scraps to work with. It works for me. Occasionally if I want to keep pieces with a collection, I will put them back in with the collection pack, or put them in an envelope with the collection. That doesn't happen very often though.

I sort them mostly in the circular file. I often just toss patterned paper and keep some basic cardstock. Right now all of my scraps fit in a 12.5 x 12.5 baggie.

As a cardmaker, solid color scraps from 8.5x11 cardstock are kept with the full sheets in job ticket holders
Solid and PP scraps from 12x12 are kept with the same papers or ones that are close in 13x13 page protectors in hanging files
Small solid color scraps are kept upright in a little bin in ROYGBIV-Neutrals-Specialty order to flip through for die cutting sentiments and small elements.
Scraps from 6x6 paper pads are kept in the pad which is turned upside down so they won’t fall out.

Thanks for your responses. For over a decade, I've used two white stackable Pottery Barn letter trays to corral scraps. Like Chinagirl828 & justjac I simply assign one for solids & the other for patterns/speciality scraps. The random mix of colors & patterns in these trays have inspired color schemes & pattern combinations on many layouts over the years. Like Basket1lady I always peruse scraps before cutting into full sheets of paper, which keeps the trays manageable & scraps used. Since I only purchase paper that I like, fits my style, & will use...eventually, I also keep small scraps. I toss them in a bowl until it overflows, then I batch stamp/punch/diecut them into circles, stars, labels, tabs, etc. to use on future layouts & store the shapes in a divided Artbin Solutions Box that I consult first when adding basic elements to my layouts. Surprisingly, I don't either! Our storage solution for scraps is similar (with yours more organized than mine).

I selected “other”. Patterned paper scraps are stored in two, thin 9x12-ish Iris containers. There is no organization within the containers.

I trim off any stray sections of patterned papers that poke out, which would be more easily bent if I leave them as is. I use my smaller banner dies, etc., to cut those random shapes into something useful for a layout or card. I leave patterned paper in as big pieces as possible and put them into an Iris bin.
I cut colored card stock into photo and card mats, and again, any stray leftovers into usable die cut shapes for cards or embellishments to go on a page. I sort them by color. I put the photo mats into an Iris bin and take up far less room than when left in their “whatever is leftover” shape/size. The embellishment die cuts go into a basket that I keep handy for when making cards.
While I’m not always consistent in trimming, die cutting, and storing the leftovers, it makes them so much easier to use, and more likely to be used. I don’t go through my untrimmed scraps as often, but they end up taking up too much space if I don’t trim and die cut them.

In a shopping basket like what you use in the store. It fits in my Kallax cube. It's organized by ROYGBIV and other colors are at the back. It's a combination of full sized sheets of cardstock, cardstock scraps, and pattern paper scraps. I use sheet protectors and gallon bags for scraps. When one starts to get too full, I throw some scraps away.

I chose other because I now toss most scraps. At my crop last week people went through my trash pulling my scraps.
If I save a scrap it is large. The little scraps I save tend to be a theme I know I will use. Like hay or wood or dog bones. I can throw that scrap into the theme box it goes to. Otherwise they get tossed.
