I can't stand to have the smoke detector chirping for a low battery. We had one last week and changed it as soon as we heard it. Even ran out and got a new battery right away since we didn't have that kind. However, I have been in several people's homes for work and it seems it is not uncommon for them to be chirping for months and not be changed. I was just at one home (I go there every three months) and it has been going off the last three times I was there. Another that I talk to online weekly has been chirping for at least 6 weeks. How can people stand that? How long do you wait to change the battery?

I do not know how people can stand that. I LOATHE the chirp and would change the battery immediately. like IMMEDIATELY. Ours are hardwired and have battery backups. I change the batteries every six months. I don't remember the last time we had a battery chirp, but I couldn't even stand it let it go for ten minutes. I have an Amazon Subscribe & Save to be sure we always have the batteries on hand.

We change it as soon as it beeps. We have a dog and don't want to be out and have it going off because it scares her. That's my big worry when we are not home, that the detector battery alert will beep. It's also a pain to change it in the middle of the night. We always have enough batteries to change all the detectors so we don't have to wait until the store opens.

One chirp and I'm up on the step stool to replace that battery. And besides the horribly annoying chirp, we're talking about a smoke detector! Not something I want to mess around with. I know the chirp means we probably have quite a long time left on the battery... But who wants to risk that? Not me. |

In a nano second! I can’t stand it and I have three dogs that it really freaks out. I’ve been known to drag my husband out of bed to go change the battery in the middle of the night.

I don't know why the chirps ALWAYS seem to start in the middle of the night, but they do.
And yes, I do bug DH to get up and change it, because a. He is taller than I am and I can't reach with just a step stool and b. He doesn't want me climbing a ladder if I don't have to.

IMMEDIATELY! What kind of freak doesn't? I mean, what if there is a fire?
Now my off topic rant, I hate that the new smoke detectors have an internal battery and I don't need to change it for 10 years. It feels neglectful and dangerous.

Right away. I can’t stand it. We had a dog that would go crazy when he heard it chirp, too. He would run around the house really nervous, I guess waiting for the alarm to go off.

We change it within minutes. The beep is the only thing the dog is afraid of. As in, quivering in a corner afraid. I’m not going to subject her to that fear any longer than necessary.

It drives me INSANE but I don't have a ladder high enough so I have to wait for someone to save me. I think i'm going to have him change it early to make sure i'm not stuck with it chirping. I can tolerate about 2 chirps! ha

The second I hear it! Years ago I lived in a ground floor apartment with thin walls. The apartment above was vacant for a few months and one day a smoke alarm started chirping. I could hear it all day and night and I called the next day to have someone go out and replace the battery, it took over two weeks. I was livid.

I don't give it a chance to chirp. Batteries are replaced same time every year. I don't care how long the battery says it will last. Don't want to wake up to chirping in the middle of the night.

I think that either those people dont have a new battery and forget every ti e they go shopping.Or depending on the location of the smoke detector don’t feel safe on a step stool or ladder.
What most don’t know is you can ask your local fire department to change the batteries( you must provide them). We have a smoke detector 16-18 feet high and have had them change the entire unit.

One chrip I'm thinking what's that? Second chrip oh yeah the smoke detector. Go change it.
What kind of person could live with it for more than a minute? The same people who can drive without the seat belt on and listen to the constant binging.

Batteries chirp at night mainly because of the temperature drop. It gets cold, the chemicals slow down, the device thinks the battery is dead. It doesn’t chirp as much in the daytime because of warmer temps.
We change the battery within a few days. We have to go buy the battery because it is a special size and we don’t keep it on hand. Our alarms (fire and security) are hardwired with the backup battery in the control box. And the chirp is not constant. Maybe 2-3 and then no more until the next day.

Immediately. If for some reason we don't have a battery for it, it gets pulled down and we get one that day. The chirping scares our dog.

Right away. Or as soon as I figure out which of the five is going off. It’s really hard to tell with the acoustics in my house. As soon as one goes off, we replace them all. Then I buy five more replacement batteries for next year. That sound is so annoying at 3am.

Change it instantly I can’t stand the sound
However be aware that they make a very similar chirping when the smoke detector is expired or malfunctioning.
