We have the opportunity to go to Colorado early October with the choice of Avon or Steamboat Springs. Help me decide which one please, we are not skiers. Thank you.

Avon is more ritzy (might site a celebrity) compared to Steamboat, but both have beautiful scenery. Both have small muesuems and lots of outdoor activities like trail walks, fishing, boating, golf etc. Steamboat has hotsprings! But, I think Avon has better shopping and restaurants.
I would definitley make sure lodging is in place very early as early Oct is the mid to end of leaves changing.
Difficult choice, but I think I might lean towads Avon a bit more if I didn't care to partake in the hotsprings.

I don't know either of those places that well but.. Like Snyder said I know Avon is more ritzy.. Steamboat is more touristy.. October can be crazy to get up in the mountains depending on the week the leaves change. Beware of that.

Thanks for the mention of the fall leaves - hadn't even thought of that.

What do you want to do while here? Are you flying or driving?

What do you want to do while here? Are you flying or driving? This is a good point - if you're flying into DIA, Avon is going to be much more convenient than hauling all the way to Steamboat. I've been there once and just didn't think the drive was worth it. I much prefer the towns in Summit or Eagle county. I disagree a bit with the ritzy comment - I honestly think that's way more a thing in Aspen, there's a pretty broad cross section of people around Vail.

I agree, but was comparing it to Steamboat, not Aspen or Vail. Those two are ritzier than Avon. lol

We were in CO last year for a wedding and had a choice between Avon and Steamboat Springs for some vacation time after the wedding. I was finding more for us to do (our boys were 13 & 16 at the time) in Steamboat Springs than Avon. I don't know if it was easier to find options in SS because it's basically one area vs Avon being close to other areas. We ended up deciding on SS and enjoyed it so much we're going back next month. We hiked, fished, rode horses, & enjoyed activities at the base of the ski area that are sadly now closed (mountain coaster and mini-golf). This year we'll do the horses again and I'm finding different hikes to try and lakes to visit. We didn't have any luck fishing so we're not dragging the fly-fishing gear out again, but we'll probably take some poles and a tackle box. DH was looking into guided fly-fishing trips (the companies provide all of the necessary gear), but I'm not sure we'll do one. Otherwise it was nice to just hang out at the condo or at the pools. I want to try the hot springs, but I'm not sure if we will. We are planning to go out of the way on the way home and visit Dinosaur National Monument.

We spent a week in Avon a few years ago and we were so bored we left a day early. The lifts to the mountain tops are not to be missed, but other than that we just didn't find it that appealing.

That is my concern - I'm concerned we will not have anything to do.
