I am a one person, two indoor only cats household. My condo entry is an indoor entry, so it’s not like a lot of muck and guck comes in the house with me. I changed out the carpeting when i moved in 5 years ago. Shoes off, though I don’t ask it of visitors. Carpet is only on the stairs, an upstairs hallway, and my bedroom and office. I have a carpet shampooer (condo association doesn’t allow us to run the water lines that a professional uses, sigh) and use it twice yearly. Last time was October. I put off the April shampooing because we’ve had a much too wet and cold spring and the carpet would take forever to dry. I don’t know that I’ve gone 8 months between shampooing before. So, if you can stomach it, take a look at these pics. Sorry, posting from my phone so I can’t put them in a spoiler. #1 is the extracted water after just cleaning the area next to my side of the bed (which has a throw rug at the spot where I get In and out of bed). #2 shows the dirty carpet next to the area where I pulled up the chair mat next to my desk before shampooing. The difference to me is astounding. This condo is the first place I’ve had carpets in almost 35 years. I’m curious, how often do you have your carpets thoroughly cleaned? And if you have ANY ideas about how mine become so dirty, and how to prevent it, I am all ears!

We have two dogs and one is an asshole and thinks carpet on the stairwell is to pee on every once in a while. So dh usually cleans the carpet every other week. We have hardwood downstairs and carpet on the stairs, upstairs hallway and master bedroom.
ETA, he usually only does the hall and stairwell. He might do the bedroom a couple times a year.

I used to lug the shampooer out on days the kids would be gone all day, but then I got a steam cleaner for the carpet. I feel like it cleans just as well, but it leaves the carpet way less wet. I feel like I can just leave the ceiling fans on and it’s fine in half an hour or so.
We are a pet free, shoe free (and we do ask guests to remove shoes), eat only in the kitchen household.

My nephew owns a carpet business and he says at least once a year. Since you remove your shoes, you carpet shouldn't be that dirty, so the dirt you are seeing is mainly dust. Nephew says people often think if they have allergies, they need to yank up the carpet, but said it really is the opposite. He said the carpet will grab the dust and not get stirred about like it would if it was on tile or wood flooring. The carpet you show is quite light, but what I'm thinking, is your house cleaning not vacuuming that area very well if at all? Shampoo water always looks worse that it really is. In my opinion and from photos I've seen of some of the places he has done floor, your water looks mild.

I purchased a Hoover steam cleaner with the big tank like yours. You don't even want to see the dirty water after I use it. I have 3 dogs with one being very old and having incontinence issues. I have started cleaning about every 2 weeks. I have an off white area rug and the bedroom carpet. It's not difficult to use and takes no time for the drying. I need to get in a better rhythm of a regular cleaning.

downstairs - probably quarterly now that our incontinent older cat has passed (RIP Little Friend) - more if a spill or other mishap occurs. Upstairs - the hallway? At least weekly and sometimes daily - we have another incontinent cat upstairs (love you Midnight - he's 20)

Carpet makes my skin crawl. We have tile throughout. One of my kids has 2 area rugs. They’re gross.
My classroom is also tile. No carpets.

I bought a huge sheet of heavy plastic to fit my area rug on to shampoo. I vacuumed it 7 ways to Sunday first. I even flipped it over and vacuumed, and got a surprising amount of dust out, and even more when I flipped it back upright.
Then I shampooed ... oof. They are 20+ year old rugs. No pets, but kids, and a farmer husband. I am not religious about shoes off in the house. So I knew they would be dirty. Dang! I shampooed about 4 times, the last time being plain hot water.
What surprised me was how much dust and sand I vacuumed out AFTER the rug had dried. But I felt like the rug was really clean. I had three 9'x12' rugs and did one at a time, so I could have the plastic under it - to protect the wood floors. It was a workout!

Ok, y’all convinced me to clean 3 times a year. Maybe you can help me out though.
The stairs (which take a full 2 hours on their own) are a bear, because I use the attachment. But the worst part (believe it or not) is that they are wet like a sponge and even in the 70’s and 80’s will take 2 days to dry. It’s that the attachment just doesn’t pull enough water back up out of the carpet. This is a 2 year old Bissell, so it’s not an old worn out machine.
What are you using on your stairs? Do you have the same problem with then staying super wet for days?

I only have carpet on my 2 sets of stairs but I religiously rent a steam cleaner twice a year for the carpets, living room furniture and my van. After removing carpet in other homes and seeing the dirt ground through the carpet and under padding Plus the disgustingly dirty water from multiple cleaning passes I will NEVER have carpet in a room again.

We have a Hoover carpet cleaner. I have to use the attachment for the stairs but it is never wet after a few hours. Either you are putting way too much water in the carpet or that brand does not remove the water very well.
Your water is not as black as some I have cleaned. I don't do it but once or twice per year.
