I’m looking for inspiration in scrapbooking older photos from 50’s -70’s in a more contemporary way (as opposed to the ‘traditional family heritage’ layouts from 20 years ago) I recently inherited a box of old family photos that included numerous holidays spent in Hawaii. I would like to play up the Hawaiian retro vibe. Any suggestions who to look at, products? Thanks 💗

can't help specifically with product lines but I'm sure someone here can. The photos from the 70s I've scrapped, I've done so the same way I would scrap current photos - picking colours that either match the photo or for the b/w ones - that fit the theme so for Hawaii, I would choose bright tropical colours. The one thing I do is make sure I have full names/date/place whenever possible and if the pictures were captioned, I'll include those captions (and attribute if I know who wrote the captions)

I love Debbi Tehrani's style! I did a search on her blog under childhood and this is what came up.

Heritage is one of my biggest areas of interest. I believe in recognizing that people have always lived life in color regardless of the camera's ability to capture it.
That said, I scrap them to tell their story. No brown or black pages for me. I do try to use elements that are evocative of the era in which they lived. Every period of time has a recognizable color palate. I might start there.
I do not scrap a photo to compliment the colors in the photo. I scrap to tell the story of the photo.
This is a concrete example but my mother loves yellow, so I am drawn to yellow when I scrap photos of her. I start there. I like to think if the people in the pictures saw the layout it would evoke their memories as well

Thanks for your input! I think I feel a bit hesitant to get started scrapbooking these pictures because these photos and stories aren’t mine and I want to do justice to the memories of my Aunties and Grandma.

What a great question teri123 ! And thanks for the link refugeepea , I'm going to bookmark that site for when I get around to scrapping some of my older family photos. I believe in recognizing that people have always lived life in color regardless of the camera's ability to capture it. Great quote! And I like your idea of using colour palettes from the era when the photo was taken.

Thanks 💗 There is a new line/kit of retro-vibe embellishments by Christine Middlecamp, and her first release was based on the old Royal Hawaiian Resort. The designs would work well with photos from the 50s-70s: Layered Life Pink Royal Hawaiian
I also really like this older retro-feeling line from Authentique called Utopia, some of which you can still find here: Authentique Utopia Paper PadAnd back in the day, Basic Grey had a great collection called South Pacific that you can still purchase as a digital collection: Basic Grey South Pacific

For me it would depend on the colors of the photo. Photos from the 70s often contain a lot of browns in them and the LL Pink Royal Hawaiian might look good with them. If my photos matched this paper, Simple Stories Vintage Coastal, I would use it because it really just speaks to me.
I would just pick a line and go with it. Those photos need to be scrapped.

I believe in recognizing that people have always lived life in color regardless of the camera's ability to capture it. What a PERFECT way to say this! Yes! Use colours. Scrap in a way that reflects the stories in the photos! Think of yourself as one of those DT members who prints their kids' photos in black & white so they can showcase the latest scrapbook supplies!

Oops sorry! I was trying to respond to a post, not just repost their post…. I obviously don’t know how message boards work 🙄 ANYWAYS I’m so grateful for the suggestions! I jumped on the layered life Royal Hawaiian re-issue! I bought what I could find from the Simple Stories Vintage Coastal 🌺

Brande Davison made a 6x8 heritage album that I just adore! I'm not sure how to link it ( I'm on my phone) but I'll come back tonight to do it. ...... Found it! Here's a link to a video flip through on InstagramI'd love to make something like it someday ... So weird. The link works when I use my laptop, but on my phone it's all mixed up. If it doesn't work for you, and you want to look it up, the video is dated Nov 13, 2019.
