I was just looking at some of the new collections that were posted here on other threads, and frankly, I was a bit put off by all of the words. Words on the papers, words on the stickers, word phrase Thickers and packs of title ephemera. So. Many. Words. I want to be clear that this criticism isn't directed at any one manufacturer, because many of the manufacturers are doing this.
I'm very much a storyteller/scrapbooker. I want the words on my pages to be intentional and make sense to the story that I am telling. I struggle with "word salad" layouts where there are just random words all over the place that don't have anything to do with the story, but they are on the layout because they happened to come with the collection.
Is it just me? Do any of you feel the same way?

I just wait for the right layout to use the words paper. I just used a 9x12 section of the 12x12 Heidi Swapp Sun Chaser Moments paper today because it fit in exactly with the layout I was making - DD going down North America's largest mountain tube slide. Some of the words on the paper are: play, beautiful, discover, breathe, dreamer, wander, enjoy, moments, chill, happy, sunshine, hooray. I have had this paper for awhile and knew it would be used for a fun, adventure type layout for one of the kids.
Anyways I combined it with the sun burst type paper from the same collection. Having just about 1/2 of the 9x12 layout with the word paper helps cut down on words. It also allowed me to have the title stick out as it wasn't competing with other words.
For other papers I have cut out strips of word bubble and used them as embellishments. Or on cards. Even for pocket page embellishment cards.
So you dont have to use the paper as a full sheet. You can get creative with how you use it.

Oh and as far as word embellishments and stickers, I love those. I like to create clusters with them.
So like today, I used Heidi Swapp Sun Chaser paper but Pinkfresh Studios embellishment stickers.
I cross paper lines/manufacturers so I think it makes using the word stickers and embellishments easier.

I never use words just because they are in a collection. Nor do I consider the words a word salad. They might apply to someone, but sometimes not me or my pictures. If if is something like ephemera, thickers, or any other type of embellishment that has a bunch of words, I will not buy it if most of them are not to my liking or need. So I guess I am saying they don't bother me.

I love words. But they have to be the right words. I wouldn’t randomly throw words on a page that I didn’t didn’t fit. I like to have lots of word chipboard or phrase stickers so I have a selection to use when I feel the project calls for it. But words to me are like a design element. I also mix things all the time (kits, manufacturers) so it doesn’t matter to me about saving pieces/words until the story is right.

I almost never want(ed) to use the words that manufacturers made and I don't like my pages to say things I would never ever say in real life.

Not only does the industry predictably repeat the same tired words/sentiments for every theme, but also includes them on all products within each collection (e.g. patterned papers, flat/foam/puffy/layered stickers, diecuts, journaling cards, chipboard, washi, brads, stamps). Even when a manufacturer introduces new phrases, they are repeated ad nauseum within the collection & often included throughout other manufacturers' future collections. All of these phrases become overused quickly, leaving the consumer with multiples of the same words/phrases. I'd prefer eliminating the words/sentiments & replacing them with several coordinating alpha options (e.g. flat/puffy/tile/foam stickers, stamps, dies) so papercrafters can create their own!

I really noticed this today when putting together a layout. It’s always kind of irked me too. While my hubby liked the layout he did say it was ‘busy’. I wasn’t going to put the word phrases on the layout but I looked through a few magazines and it seemed to be the trend. Not that I’m trendy lol. I was submitting it for a challenge so wanted it to look current but that wouldn’t be my norm. And ya no way I’m putting just any word/word phrase on the layout. It needs to make sense.

I don't care for a bunch of words on paper.
I love stickers and embellishment words. So many companies, seem to have the same old words on their product.
I usually make my own words, with alphabet stickers or chipboard.

I feel the same way about my own pages. I wish companies would include more icons and less words. This is why my favorite AE collections are the ones that include some icons and not just words (or the same word(s) repeated over and over). I don't mind it on other people's pages and often can see how a word or phrase can add just the right pop of color or fill out a space. On my own pages though, I can't use a word/phrase unless it goes along with my journaling/story I'm trying to tell. It bugs me.
I know I've lamented about it before, but I also wish the would expand the language they do use. There are thousands of words out there in the world, pick something besides the same ones that have been in the last 5 collections.

Echo park started offering one set of chipboard with icons, another with phrases. I like that except if I really like both the words and icons, I feel like I need both instead of just buying one set. I wish they did that with the ephemera, too.

I usually skip over words on papers unless it is like a bookprint type print, with rows of tiny text that reads more like a background design rather than something where the words are important to the page. I'm not a huge fan of some of the word packs, there seems to be a fine line between having 50 versions of "happy" in my stash, or getting all the words I just can't use like "blessed". I do try to choose carefully when I'm shopping to make sure I'm buying things I will use. I've noticed a whole lot of layouts using the Spectrum Sherbet line with the starburst design paper where each ray has a word in a matching colour (Shimelle did it in a recent live but I've also seen several other examples), and that kind of page is really not my thing.

I like words. They go nice in my project life. But I like creative words like pinkfresh does. They are shaped creatively and colored creatively and the words are interesting. Different from just happy/blessed/ best day kind of thing.
I also have noticed that a lot of 12x12 scrappers use words to simply fill space. There's a lot of layouts posted especially in Shimelles Facebook group that don't have any journaling. These layouts rely on words. And while I've done them in the past, the layouts I like best in my albums are ones with journaling. There's are too many design team members out there who seem to be throw as much product you can at a layout and don't bother with any journaling. I don't find any of those inspiring. I need a space for my words

I don't want to take what I just bought and only get 2 layouts from the products lol I guess instead of word salad it is product salad ? Not my thing either. I don't want my story or photo(s) to get lost in a cluttery vomit of stuff. I do wish companies hired more (for lack of a better phrase) real life, every day scrapbooker. I personally think they would appeal to more scrappers/crafters by doing so.

I like words but there are way too many of them and they are so similar. This is the best, best day ever, having the best time, time spent with you is the best, etc. There are only so many times I can use the same/similar phrase on a page. I try to judge how usable the embellishment pack/sticker sheet is before purchasing and I am ok with knowing I won't be able to use them all.

But as far as inspiration goes, I'd rather have a sketch with a journaling block.

I either use word paper in smaller strips to pull your eye across the page, or I use the paper for a background and put a large mat 11.5 x 11.5 on top of it so the colors of the page all work together. I keep my stickers of words all together so I can pull them out when I want a word that works on a specific page. I think the product can all work, but you have to be a bit more creative with it.

I don't care for collections with lots of words. Most of the time, I know I won't use them. I'd rather stamp a word on a diecut.

I frequently cut out the word or words I need or want and mat and pop them. I also chalk the words I want to emphasize if the background is light enough. I have cut the paper and then pieced it back together to have the words I want showing at the top or bottom. Then the other part is covered by photos and embellishments.

Letter stickers? Want to buy a vowel? I have a whole drawer of them. All the vowels are gone except 6 u's and 4 i's, and no more r,s,t,n,or d's.

The newest Pinkfresh release is so wordy. I do appreciate the variety of words and phrases but a lot of the papers have words on them.
I don't mind an all over print with little words- I can make good backgrounds and mats out of them. I just don't like the hodge-podge approach.

I almost never want(ed) to use the words that manufacturers made and I don't like my pages to say things I would never ever say in real life. I feel the same way. If there are too many words and/or other items that I am unlikely to use in a package of ephemera/embellishments, I won’t buy the package. If it comes in a discounted pack from Tuesday Morning, I’ll overlook it and buy it if the rest is worth the price to me, but the words rarely, if ever, get used.

Don't go out of my way to buy these papers, and often if they come in a kit or collection I end up either using the other side, or else keeping for use when the words fit my project.
I have seen some interesting ways to use those script papers or those with lots of larger trendy words:
Cut out the words you like and feature them on your page.
Put the script page at an angle and/or cut it in strips to work with other patterns so it is obvious that it is not part of your message.
Paint over it or cover it with vellum to either completely or partially cover the words, just leaving a bit of the full colour at the edges.

I agree that using text paper sparingly can have a big impact.

I love a good word paper. LOVE.
I also love to include applicable words in embellishment clusters or around my photos on a layout.
However, I have noticed that for the last few years, in the sticker sheets, chipboard, ephemera packs, etc, there are so.many.words. More words and phrases than I could use up with the collection.
I guess this is where I'm happy that I'm a theme scrapper, and that most of my themes tend to mix and match pretty well, so I just share all the fall word stickers across all my fall pages, etc.
I do wish we got more icons and less words. In my perfect world too, all designers would design their stickers/ephemera packs with a variety of sizes of the icons. So many are large, when it's nice to have some smaller pieces to sprinkle around. (Bunny trail, I know, but since I was wishing, I thought I'd get it out there). 😄
