I really couldn’t think of a more succinct way to word that title. 😆
Have you ever created an album that didn’t use page protectors? If so, how has it held up over time? I have a beautiful hand-bound album with pages already fixed in place. Kind of like an old fashioned photo album where the pages were tied together. I’d love to use it for a baby book but the idea of the pages being “bare” makes me a bit nervous. I’d love to hear about everyone’s experience with this.

LOL oh that made me giggle like a 13 year old.
I have made 3 albums using paper bags and cardboard. All the pages are open and not in page protectors.
They have held up well. One is for Halloween/October, another was for my mom, and another for my grandma. I got that one back when she passed away.
I just dust them with a soft cloth.

When I started scrapbooking in 1994 with Creative Memories, customers were instructed to attach photos and embellishments directly to their album pages. As more companies started producing scrapbook supplies, page protectors became the norm. However, I don't like page protectors although I did buy a few albums with them as new companies produced them (K & Co, Close to my Heart), but ultimately I chose the CM albums because I can use them without page protectors. However, now I create my pages on cardstock and attach them to the album page with photo corners, and I don't cover pages with page protectors. I do not know of anyone else that doesn't use page protectors. My albums have held up fine. My oldest is 28 years. I do recommend using quality, photo-safe adhesive and CM albums are well made and durable.

I've done some smaller (8x8) albums without page protectors, and they've held up fine. I will say that depending on your album size (are the pages a standard size?) you might be able to slip the CM page protectors over your finished pages since they are the type that can just slide onto a finished page. signed, ~another scrapper that primarily uses CM albums and [sometimes] CM page protectors

Thanks for these responses! The pages are 12x12 luckily. I had no idea about the CM protectors. That might be worth trying just to see if I like it. But it’s also reassuring to know that the uncovered pages have held up well too.

I did some mini albums (4x6 and smaller) years ago - they're in fine shape but I don't think they get flipped through terribly often. In general though, I prefer page protectors

I've made a few mini's w/out page protectors. 10+ years ago. I used to print my photos at home using my hp printer. I don't know if that's why this happened or just too much weight was piled on top of the albums over time. The writing from the facing page, I used Zig double ended markers, has etched onto some of the photos. Of course, right over the persons face.

i have never used page protectors. i don't like the look. it reminds me of grandma's vinyl covered sofa. i'm a very tactile person so i like feeling any dimensional items on a page.

For a baby book, I would want to protect those pages somehow. A few things I have done:
**Used a spray or brushed on sealer over each finished page. Best for a dry climate, I think, as dampness may make the sealer sticky.
**Laminated each of the finished pages with a heat laminator.
**Used a Fuse tool to create custom page protectors out of ones I have that are the wrong size.

I'm thinking of all the photo albums my family has at home from the past 50-70 years. The photos are fine except those 80s square ones that all turned pink, but protection wouldn't have made a difference to that. Over time the photos have started falling out but they were just stuck in with cellotape (scotch tape?) folded into a loop on the back so not exactly archival quality.
Proper photos will probably hold up better than home/inkjet printed ones, especially if little fingers might be touching them. Persnickety Prints apparently does true photographic prints.
I guess it depends how fancy/embellished you want to get, how many fingers will be touching, whether you want to supervise little hands or just live with the pages getting "well loved." I would go for it. Photos can be reprinted, pages can be repaired, and kids can learn to treat things with care. Or you can see it as something that will last just long enough to be loved by your family and that's OK.

I've done one - it was a spiral bound album (either 8x8 or 10x10 - can't remember). I left most of them bare, but I did find slip-on page protectors and used those for a few of the pages that were "busier". So far so good - it is about 10 yrs old.
love the title!

I’m going to try some of the slip-on protectors to see if I like the result. And if I don’t, I’ll feel confident leaving the pages exposed based on everyone’s answers. I never realized so many people don’t use page protectors!
