Hi -
Any ideas for a work Yankee swap? The price range is $30-$40 and most of the gifts are nice - although there are a few joke ones thrown in. The group is mixed - I think the youngest is a 25 year old guy and the oldest is a 54 year old woman. Surprisingly, a popular gift in the past was an electric heated throw from Costco. Other popular gifts were a Google Chromecast and a mini Ninja blender. Two years ago someone got stuck with one of those Big Bass singing fish you hang on the wall and he loved it so it's all over the place. The only thing is no gift cards.
Help - I need some ideas and I'm trying hard not to repeat items from the past.
Thanks.

A lot of mine are alcohol related if the group is all of age. Nice wine glasses and a bottle of wine. Last year I bought "Tequila Mockingbird" (drink book) with bar ware. It usually goes over well.

Came in here to ask the same thing. I'm guessing it's a regional name for one of those games where you can steal other people's presents?

Yup - it's the game where you can steal other people's presents. I'm from the Northeast so Yankee Swap it is!
Someone mentioned to me a board game might be popular - any suggestions on board games?
Thanks.

Catch Phrase is a game I love.
Also, I like puzzles, so I like any puzzle type game/contraption.
I'd love one of those clothes folder dohickeys. Do this! do this! LOL
The Underwater Dogs book is a good gift for a dog person.
Or, you could create "photo booth" props for Xmas...like a do it yourself photo shoot for the recipient. Santa beards & hats, reindeer antler headbands, etc. Packaged creatively, (like in a hard shirt box wrapped in black paper with camera lens/buttons drawn on it in white pen?) I think that would be a neat gift!

I think movie tickets is always a good gift idea or maybe a gift card to a local restaurant? I've also received a big bunch of scratch off lottery tickets in a Yankee Swap before and that was fun, especially since I won a little money! My husband once got an electric wine opener and that was a fun and useful gift!

Please explain how the actual swap works. Are there rules? Who steals who's stuff.
TIA

Thanks for all of the ideas!
Yankee swaps are fun and we've done them for years and years. Say there are 20 people - each person brings one wrapped gift and picks a number (1-20) out of a hat. Once everyone has picked a number, the numbers are randomly picked again. So if I picked number 10 and number 10 was picked first, I could pick any of the presents out of the pile of 20. Then once the next number is picked, that person has to decide if they want to "steal" my gift (which is already unwrapped and everyone can see what it is) or picked a wrapped gift. You have to decide whether or not you want to steal BEFORE you choose an unwrapped gift. Then the third person can choose to steal any unwrapped gift and so on until they are all opened. Then the first person that went gets to choose to keep their own gift or steal any gift that's been opened. It's so funny to see which gifts get stolen over and over - it's usually not the ones that you would expect.
