If you use a card for gas, be aware there may be a new hold on your account.. Filling up the tank today requires a higher bank balance than it used to, even if you’re only buying a little gas. The Wall Street Journal reports that both Visa and Mastercard have raised the amount a gas station can place on hold when you swipe your credit or debit card to $175.Most gas stations require you to swipe your credit or debit card before you begin pumping gas. Because the station has no way of knowing whether you’re going to buy one gallon or two dozen, stations pre-authorize your card by placing a short-term hold on some of the money in your account. They later charge you for the amount of gas you actually buy and release the hold. www.kbb.com/car-news/gas-stations-can-now-place-175-bank-hold/

I have never had a hold on my debit card, only credit card. Both at the pump and inside.
But I am glad they raised the hold limit as those with larger tanks were not able to get a full tank on the $75-100 hold previously there.

The last time I purchased gas there was a sign on the pump informing about the higher hold. The price of gas went up $0.35 from the last time I got gas about a week or so ago. Will this increase stop before we have to sit down with the credit manager to apply for the ability to buy gas?

I’ve never been to a gas station that authorized more than $1 before pumping and as far as I know, they don’t limit how much you can get. It’s about $100 to fill my tank right now and it’s still only ever a $1 pre-auth.

On the other end, it is ridiculous for them to be able to place a $175 hold on people with more fuel efficient cars.

In my area almost everyone pays inside due to card skimmer issues. Only time I don't is using my 76 app that has my debit card and is used with no hold.

I'm still putting $2.79 gas in my tank. I'm going to crap when I buy bulk this fall.
I thought it was pretty bad paying $2.79... sigh..

as my daughter who lives in new zealand loves to point out.. if they had a car, they would spend $12.50 a gallon.
I think we are so used to having cheap clothes, cheap gas, cheap food.. that we live in a new world and we might be better off agitating for a higher minimum wage.. increasing social supports from govt.

It wouldn't be such an issue for most if they released the hold on the pre approved amount the same day.

I buy Exxon through the app, and I don't recall there being a hold that way. Might be worth a try to avoid that hold amount.

This must be a US thing - I’ve never had a gas station in Canada pit any hold on my account ever. I put my debit card in the pump, pump my gas, and the exact amount I pumped is taken out of my account immediately.
And if I use a credit card? Same thing. On my card side I do see that is a “pending” transaction until it processes, but still only the exact amount.

However, I don’t know if it occurs in all provinces. Like in the US, it’s the bank issuers of cards who decide and set the amounts. And it’s for other merchants, too, not just gas stations. A user doesn’t usually notice these holds because unless they’re nearing their credit limit, a hold doesn’t affect them negatively. There's nothing you can see that says "Hold."

I know that I won’t see “hold” but I can see my current balance and my credit available. And adding any pending charges to the current balance always equals my limit - there has never been less available to me after any purchase than the amounts that are awaiting authorization.

Then your bank issuer doesn't use holds. It depends on the bank.

Not everyone has those options. Who doesn't have the option to pay cash? People who dont carry cash. People who run out of cash before pay day and need to use a card. People who dont want to use cash.

Just because you don't carry cash or don't want to use cash doesn't mean you don't have the option to do so. And if you ran out of cash before payday, how are you gonna use a debit card?
