Anyone have any tips on how to potentially get rid of a strong cigarette smoke smell from rubber stamps? I bought a stamp set from someone and didn’t check to see if the stamps were from a smoke free home so that’s my fault. I opened the bag and the stench was awful. 🤢 I’ve been setting them in the sun (it’s only been in the low 70’s here) but if anyone else has any tips I would appreciate them!

I don't know if it will work for stamps but we used to put stinky library books in a bag of kitty litter. I would also start by cleaning them really well with stamp cleaner or soap and water, the backing sheets too, to get any nicotine coating off them.

I’ll try that after I was the stamps. Thanks!

jediannie you might want to try activated charcoal if the litter doesn't work. My DH ordered some cards for a trading card game online and they just stunk. He ran to the hardware store and bought some sheets of activated charcoal and put that in a container and left if for a couple days. It worked really well.

We've done baking soda in a garbage bag (knotted/tied shut) and left for a month. It worked great.

i'd soak them in vinegar just long enough so that it gets into the rubber. then i'd set it out in the sun. keep repeating until the smell is gone.

This is what we recommended for getting rid of smells, back when I sold Tupperware (long, long ago).

joblackford - how long did you leave the books in the kitty litter? My stamps have been in the unscented kitty litter for 24 hours and so far no change in smell. I did give them a good scrub with stamp cleaner and also with disinfectant spray on the non-rubber parts. I plan on keeping it in the bag with the litter for a few days, maybe even a week.

Well, the problem at the library was that no one would remember to go back and get the books out again... and when someone finally opened the bag the book would've been marked lost and ended up getting thrown out anyway! So that was a fail and we eventually stopped trying to save stinky books. I would guess it would take at least a week but I can't guarantee it will work at all - plastic may hold the smell more/differently than paper. Maybe adding some activated charcoal in with the litter is a good idea...?? I'm not sure.

My mother in law is a heavy smoker, so I have removed the smell from a few different things we have received from her. What seems to work best for me is wiping the item down with white vinegar and letting it air dry. Then, if still stinky, I will sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the item, stick it in a plastic bag, shove said bag in the garage and forget about it for a few days. Repeat as needed.

Update: The kitty litter got the smell out of the plastic DVD case the stamps were in but it didn't touch the smell in the stickers that goes on the stamps and the stamps themselves. I got some activated charcoal filters and wrapped the stuff up in that and after 3 days the smell is almost gone! I'm going to leave them in there until next week and I'm betting the smell will be almost completely gone.
Thanks for all the tips everyone! Activated charcoal filters seem to be the winner so far.

Can someone post about these miracle filters? Are we talking about the activated charcoal filters for cooker hoods?
