It is a mystery series.
I have seen it called the 3 pines series as well as the Inspector Gamache series. Setting is in Quebec province, Canada
I have read 3 of the books and the plots are very multilayered.

I recently learned that a mystery book award is given: The Agatha Award. (my world was children's books so I have been learning about the adult book world since I retired)
I am reading winners of this award.

I enjoy these books but they are an odd mix. Almost cozy mystery but the characters can be really salty.

I think it's a good series and have enjoyed a number of them, but I did feel like it got pretty repetitive there for a while and one book in particular had truly terrible editing (I *think* it was A Better Man, but I'm not sure I'm remembering that correctly). I think the last couple have rebounded and been better. My recommendation would be start at the beginning of the series but if a particular book doesn't do it for you, skip it and move on to the next. You won't miss anything essential.

Thank you for the recommendation. I just finished a 10-book series set in Sweden. Well, mainly an island off the coast, but the characters kept homes in Stockholm and had summer cottages on Sandhamn Island. I am in the market for something new so I will check these out. Thank you!

I love this series. The first couple are not the best ones but I they weren't bad enough to put down. I like how each one moves through the seasons. I like when they are in Three Pines, I don't like the ones that don't have as much with the town but I know it's unrealistic how much murder can be centered around a sleepy village no one can find. I think #5 is my favourite. I spaced out my reading of them, sometimes taking a months between picking up the next one so I don't feel like I'm reading the same thing sometimes binge reading or watching you don't enjoy it as much.

I LOVE Louise Penny! I've read all her Gamache books, then while I was waiting for the most recent one (The Madness of Crowds) to come out I went back and read them again. lol. It was fun to re-read them to see how we were first introduced to each of the characters. Her next one, "A World of Curiosities", will be coming out in November! I might go back and reread the first one again just because.

Inspector Gamache is a Canadian classic!
I heard Amazon picked it up to make a show out of it. Alfred Molina was to play Gamache, I think?

The characters in a Great Reckoning haunted me for several days. I could not get the story out of my mind.

I hope they made the main female character stronger in the series than in the books. She was quite the mess in the books. I found several things about her personality to be lacking.

Is this series Little Old Lady appropriate? My mom is a voracious reader and is always looking for new series. Just want to be sure it is G rated before I suggest it to her! Not a lot of cursing or sex stuff, what say the peas?

Obviously they’re about murders but still not super graphic.

Lovedthe series. Louise Penny just released a book along with Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not as good as the series, interesting. The State of Terror.

I got this from the library awhile ago and just couldn't get into it. I had to return it when it was due and never finished it. So now I have it for my Kindle. I might read that easier since I can enlarge the font and read it in bed. We will see. I want to like it because of who wrote it...

I admit, the characters are lovely but the mysteries can be odd and I hate the national storyline that runs through them.

Inspector Gamache is a Canadian classic! I heard Amazon picked it up to make a show out of it. Alfred Molina was to play Gamache, I think? A British man playing a French Canadian? Didn't the CBC do a movie of the first book and it also had a British actor playing Gamache? Is this series Little Old Lady appropriate? My mom is a voracious reader and is always looking for new series. Just want to be sure it is G rated before I suggest it to her! Not a lot of cursing or sex stuff, what say the peas? No sex. Two French swear words used quite a bit. They are not cozy mysteries they feel that way sometimes because of the Three Pines village setting. They are police procedural. It's Law & Order not Criminal Minds. You are told there was a crime but it's not super graphic or disturbing. Then it's more about evidence and the back story of the characters lives. There are also crimes like corruption and theft not always a murder. Chief Inspector Gamache doesn't even carry a gun. *edit it's like Blue Bloods not Criminal Minds because Blue Bloods had the personal ongoing family story.

Heck, we old ones don't object to a R rated things. Well, at least I don't.
But no bad language or nudity in the books so far. (unless you consider the French word for shit bad language)

The old one I am related to does! Kind of funny because she is super progressive socially, but cursing and sexual details just do her in.

I really love this series. I think they get better as the series progresses because you get to know the characters (and I mean characters!) in Three Pines as well as the group of police detectives.

(Though I love a French-Canadian accent, and had a weird old man inspector crush on Gamache when I was younger. Is that a thing? Anyway, yes, he should be French-Canadian.) I also fantasize about being a Ruth Zardo-esque poet in a small rural town.

Granted I have not read the books, but British actors play American all the time. I can't imagine playing French Canadian would be all that difficult. After 17 books British is not Gamache. Quebec is a character in the book, Montreal, the townships, Three Pines, French words sprinkled in, Quebec history, Quebec landmarks, Renée working at the archives, detailed descriptions of Gamache and none are that he has an British background he's very Quebecios.
