Ruth is my kindred spirit. 😉 I think casting a British actor to play Gamache is a serious misstep. seriously curious, why? Granted I have not read the books, but British actors play American all the time. I can't imagine playing French Canadian would be all that difficult. The fact that he’s Québécois is central to his character. So, two reasons: 1) I’ve yet to see a non-French Canadian effectively play a Québécois (apparently it is that difficult) and, 2) while there are numerous roles available for both British and American (or English-Canadian) actors, there are limited roles for our very large pool of talented Québécois actors.

I have just downloaded the first book in the series, thanks to this thread.

Is this series Little Old Lady appropriate? My mom is a voracious reader and is always looking for new series. Just want to be sure it is G rated before I suggest it to her! Not a lot of cursing or sex stuff, what say the peas? There is a duck (yes, a duck! lol) that says "fuck" a lot. I don't think any of the people say it, but I could be mistaken.

Inspector Gamache is a Canadian classic! I heard Amazon picked it up to make a show out of it. Alfred Molina was to play Gamache, I think? There was a tv movie adaptation made a while (decades?!) ago, so I borrowed the DVD set from the library and was super excited to watch it. Until Clara was tall, thin, beautiful, young, and had perfect hair ... lost me completely and I returned it (mostly) unwatched! I always laugh to myself when someone asks me how I'm doing and I reply, "f.i.n.e." So far, no Gamache fans, I guess, because no one has figured out what I'm referring to ...

I love a good police procedural book or tv series. I purchased the first of the Gamache book after reading the book she coauthored with Hillary Clinton. It didn’t really grab me so I haven’t tried more. Might have to give it another go.
If you are a fan of British book series like Peter Robinson or Ian Rankin I have just discovered the DCI Ryan series by JD Kirk. They literally had me laughing out loud and even crying at times. A bit crude in humour but I don’t mind that. Totally recommend it!

No one ever knows it either I always imagine it said in the tone of Jackie Chiles- Kramer's lawyer in Seinfeld. Yes, I'm FINE. Fucked up. insecure. neurotic. egotistical. (though, I trade E freely with exhausted)

Not a lot of cursing or sex stuff, what say the peas? At least one received the Agatha award and the description is: The Agatha Awards, named for Agatha Christie, are literary awards for mystery and crime writers who write in the traditional mystery subgenre: "books typified by the works of Agatha Christie . . . loosely defined as mysteries that contain no explicit sex, excessive gore or gratuitous violence, and are not classified as 'hard-boiled.'
As others mentioned, the F word is scattered in the books. I have read 4 and have not found a sex scene yet.
If your mother likes mysteries, she might like these.

Another vote for Louise Penny. I love her Inspector Gamache books. She is at a local bookstore this weekend signing books, I am excited to meet her.

The characters in a Great Reckoning haunted me for several days. I could not get the story out of my mind. I'm behind in the series but just finished A Great Reckoning a couple months ago. I think it was the best book of the series.

That’s what I really love about this series! Ruth is my kindred spirit. 😉 I think casting a British actor to play Gamache is a serious misstep. The audiobooks have always been narrated by a British actor and are excellent. In book 1 or 2 there is a reference that Inspector Gamache learned to speak English at Oxford and therefore has a British accent, so I think it's in keeping with the books since there's almost no French spoken.

I love, love, love these books!
And Alfred Molina LOOKS perfect for the role, but I agree that Quebec is basically a character in and of itself.

I love these. I embroider phrases on kitchen towels and a customer said one of my phrases reminded her of this series and suggested that I read them. I think I'm 5 books in.
