I’d really like to give my son something special as he starts his varsity football season this coming school year. Ideally, I’d love something that he could have on him as he plays each game, like maybe something inside his helmet?
Has anyone ever done something like this? Appreciate any and all ideas!
Thanks!

You might want to rethink the inside the helmet idea. Pretty sure he can’t do that.

Maybe a little something for his cleats? Like a tiny, super small charm you could put on his shoelaces? When DS played football, I sewed a tiny heart on his practice jersey. He always got ripped up practice jerseys that required me to fix them. But they had about 6 game jerseys and weren’t allowed to bring those home. Otherwise, I would have stitched something small on that jersey. Even if it was on an inside-facing spot.

Most of the equipment will be owned by the school and it is a liability to alter the items in any way.
If his site does professional dress day on game day, get him a cool tie.
Or get a cool charm for his equipment bag.

They’re very technical devices that are built a specific way. If you OWN the helmet maybe writing something in Sharpie inside, but the helmet is probably school owned. I agree with the other poster ~ something to add to his shoelaces; sew something to his socks, undershirt, underwear, etc.

I'm sure it differs from state to state and athletic unions, but I would not do anything that goes on the uniform, is worn on the person, or helmet. Which pretty much eliminates everything.
In my state, no jewelry can be worn, and nothing that is not pre-approved by the High School Athletic Union can be placed on the uniform. They are pretty picky about what brand logos can even show.
It is pretty common to have 'uniform rules' waved at some events, like very cold cross country meets - where they allow them to wear tights under the uniform. But our school required those to all be the same - black, no company/brand logo showing. We got pretty creative at using a sharpie to black out the UnderArmor logos. LOL
I watched a girl at the state track meet get her entire team DQ'd because of an earing. She was in the blocks, the starter readied them, then the Chief Umpire of the meet whistled and DQ'd her (and the entire relay team in conjunction) because she had not taken out an earing. Ooofff... it was a bad moment. But she and her coach should have known.

Congratulations on your son being on the varsity football team. I agree with the others about the helmet and the uniform. Could you come up with a little ritual or thing before each game ? I know alot of sports fans are very superstitious. Like crazy. Makes it fun. Good luck to him. 🏈

Buy him a helmet, the very best that you possibly can. It’s the only way that I agreed to allow him to play. The equipment issued by the school is old and doesn’t fit properly. I think DS’s cost about $350 in 2013ish.
DS’s had pads inside that could be pumped with air for a tight fit, but very secure. I worked with his coach to make sure that I was ordering the correct, legal helmet and had it made with the team colors. I just had to get the stickers from the coach and it was all legit.
Google football helmet safety and you will find the stats on the testing. There are a few places that do the testing, but I think that I used the Virginia Tech ratings.
Also agree that altering the equipment can DQ a team. Your DS does NOT want that as his legacy.

Many schools here have much better helmets and better concussion protocols. Every kid in NYS is assessed before even playing….soccer players too. More soccer players get concussions than first thought.

More soccer players get concussions than first thought. We did work with DS’s coaches. You definitely want to talk to them! There are certain rules that the high school leagues need to follow as well that you would need to comply with. We were told the same and he had ImPACT pre-concussion testing. I think that is fairly standard these days, as it’s just a simple cognitive computer test. When DS got a concussion while snowboarding, in the off season for football, his concussion specialist recommended buying his own helmet. The differences between his school helmet and his own helmet were vast. We were in a major school district in northern Virginia and I know for a fact that they weren’t spending $350 per helmet.
