I may be the last person on the planet who hasn't ever listened to a podcast, because I am not a good listener and I get distracted too easily.
However, I am driving 12 hours in a couple days and when my mind is blank, I think of my son and cry so I need to keep my mind occupied. I've scheduled phone calls, but that's a lot for me. So I sought out some podcasts. The big disclaimer is that I don't think I can handle anything sad. At all. I had NO idea how many people listened to true crime podcasts. I was floored! I did some research and came up with a few podcasts. If anyone has heard one of these and can recommend it, I'd appreciate it. Also, if you have something else, that's great. I just don't want anything affirming because I have no affirmations left. I was aiming for comedy, but some of these sounded good even if they weren't comedy.

I really love The History Chicks. They do in depth biographies of a variety of women in history. From Cleopatra to Lucille Ball. They've been really interesting.

I do like true crime! But here are some non-true-crime podcasts I like: 99% Invisible (some design topics, some urban building topics, some general interest topics, hundreds of episodes) Noble Blood (each episode focuses on a royal or some royal history episode -- I don't know if this is too sad, because obviously sad things happen to some royals) The Ezra Klein Show (think-piece-y, usually about current events, often with a noted scholar or writer in the area -- eg, they did a lot of episodes on Ukraine) Back episodes of You're Wrong About (I don't like it as much since Michael Hobbes left, but there are plenty of early episodes) The War on Cars (if for any reason, like me, you hate cars ) The Dream (about MLM) Maintenance Phase (focuses on health and wellness myths) Stuff you should Know (basically an explainer podcast)

Of those that you listed I’ve only listened to “my dad wrote a porno”. It certainly kept me entertained and laughing out loud.

I listen mostly to politics, but the Fresh Air podcast has some interesting episodes, as does the New Yorker Radio Hour and Freakonomics Radio.

I really love The History Chicks. They do in depth biographies of a variety of women in history. From Cleopatra to Lucille Ball. They've been really interesting. I was going to recommend this one, too! I love listening to them. Julia Child, Lucille Ball, Fannie Farmer (the cookbook author), Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Taylor, 1950s housewives... they're really funny, and VERY knowledgeable about their subjects. If learning history was that interesting when I was in school, I maybe have gone into history instead of biology. I also am interested in The Gilded Age era of US history and the HBO tv show, so I listen to the official Gilded Age HBO podcast (one episode per show, with special guests from the show's production or actors), and The Gilded Gentleman, a podcast related to that era in history. There's also The Bowery Boys podcast-- I think it might be specifically NYC history? not sure. I also listen to random episodes of This American Life (there was a *really* interesting one on how sales / rankings at car dealerships work, from a particular New Jersey car salesman's perspective-- seriously, it was a lot more interesting than it sounds, lol), and other random podcasts about cooking. A Taste of the Past is a cooking / history one; The Splendid Table...

One that I have found absolutely entertaining and endearing is "Were You Raised By Wolves" ..
It is an etiquette podcast. I am not Miss Manners, but I love listening to the two hosts, Nick Leighton and Leah Bonnema. They just click.
It's one of those podcasts that will make you smile. It's not heavy, but it keeps me listening. The quality of the production is great too.
This weeks topics were; eating soup dumplings, navigating airport security, waving while driving. Things you never knew you need to know how to handle the etiquette on! FYI - I have been eating soup dumplings all wrong!

I love the Office Ladies. It is one of the first thing I have found where my mind doesn’t wander. Very light hearted, joyous, fluffy.
I don’t know your sense of humor, but I love Welcome to Nightvale. It is a light hearted files/twin peaks/buffy type podcast reminiscent of old time radio programs on that it is a fictional story with reoccurring characters, . It is not sad or scary, but it is quirky and has me laughing out loud a lot.

I listen to Hysteria and You're Wrong About. Both are great, if you're into politics and mythbusting.
I'd also recommend Normal Gossip - I just binged two seasons. It's like talking shit with your friends, but no stakes!

I will second recommendations for You’re Wrong About (back episodes), Maintenance Phase and My Dad Wrote A Porno. For My Dad Wrote A Porno, be sure to start at season 1, episode 1 and go from there. It’s great silly fun.
Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell is excellent - kind of like a “now you know the rest of the story” vibe.
If you watch the Bachelor or Below Deck the recap podcast “Another Bachelor podcast” and “Another Below Deck podcast” are entertaining.
A Drink with a Friend is a pretty good chat show type of podcast, and Sci Fri is a great science podcast.
And I guess it’s true crime, but Dropout, the Elizabeth Holmes story (of Theranos) is really interesting.
And not a podcast, but audiobooks can be great too. If you want a funny one I recommend Yearbook by Seth Rogen.

If you have a favourite TV show, check to see if there is a podcast about it. These are (were) two of my favourite podcasts: Fake Doctors, Real Friends - This is done by Zach Braff and Donald Faison from Scrubs. Each week they go through a different episode and talk about it. They usually have a guest each week, either a fellow cast member or one of the producers or directors. They also talk to callers. It's so funny, especially if you're a fan of Scrubs. I listen when I'm walking my dog, and I have burst out laughing on numerous occasions. And Just Like That..... The Writers Room - This one was done by the director and writers of the TV show And Just Like That. A new episode was released every week, the day after the latest episode aired on TV. It was sooooooo good, and gave a lot of insight into how the episodes are written, and funny things that went on behind the scenes. Even if you're not a fan of either of those shows, it will give you an idea of what to search for. Thanks to this thread, I've just searched and found a Seinfeld podcast called Seincast which is a retrospective on all 180 episodes, done by two guys. I'm going to start listening to that one today! I also listen to a TON of true crime.

It is not sad or scary, but it is quirky and has me laughing out loud a lot. Would this be appropriate for young teens? Absolutely. No cursing, no sexual innuendos, no drugs. I like that it is very inclusive while being very matter of fact. The radio host is gay and his niece is in a wheelchair but both of those facts are just incidentally introduced, which I really like. They may be important to the story but they are just very of matter of factly presented. I think it actually has really good morals and examples of good people. It is certainly not for everyone, but I enjoy it. They also have books that are stand alone but include characters from the show. The actors are phenomenal for the podcast, they even do live tours which are really fun. There are all ages at those, young teens, a few kids and adults from young to old.

I'm going to set everything up for tomorrow. I tried to listen to "Teach me a Lesson" yesterday, but the dude droned on and on and stinking on about what he's doing, planning on doing and has ever done, that even when I tried moving forward, I couldn't get to the actual podcast. He didn't have a great talking voice either.
