When papercrafting, do you use sketches? (KEY: Always = 10/10 times; Usually = 7-9/10; Sometimes = 4-6/10; Rarely = 1-3/10; Never = 0/10). Please share your favorite source &/or designer as well as remember to check out Sketchy Saturday posts on this board (see the latest: Sketchy Saturday July 9). TIA.

I've been using them more often lately, mostly because I know I've been great at collecting and saving inspiration then never actually using it, so I'm trying to do more of the sketches I save, or scraplift the layouts I love. I think my go to designers are SG or page maps, probably out of convenience, but there are plenty of great sketch designers out there.

I've chosen 'Usually" and I am including digital templates in with sketches. I use a sketch or template for probably 70% of my layouts, and scraplift for another 20%, so only about 10% of my layouts are my own design!

I use Scrapbook Generation sketches often. I’m taking the current class.

I usually use them, and my go-to sources are Scrapbook Generation and Page Maps. I use other sources occasionally.

I LOVE sketches!! I struggle with page design and without sketches, all of my pages would have 3, maybe 4 different designs.

I ticked usually but it depends...sometimes every layout starts with a sketch, sometimes only a handful do. But overall, I reach for sketches more often than not.
I still like my BH sketches that started me off with sketch use, Page Maps, SG, Susan Stringfellow...but I also often just pop '3 photo scrapbook sketch' or the like into Google image search and scroll until something catches my eye. And of course the sketchy Saturday and Sketchtember sketches here.
I rarely follow a sketch exactly - mostly because the majority are 12x12 and I scrap 8.5x11 almost exclusively (some 8x8) but also because I tend to have a simpler style

I either use a sketch or scraplift for 90% of my pages. The other 10% are either PL Pages 9% or totally winging it 1%.
For me the fun part is putting everything together and having it work with out too much fussing. That's also why I like to use mostly collections (or at least start there and add on) and print my photos to size.

Rarely--I like the idea of sketches, but not the "hassle" of finding one to use. I will search my stash if I'm really struggling with a starting a LO or if I'm tired of the design rut I'm stuck in.

I checked usually. Like Linda, I sometimes rely on sketches for every LO. That is especially true when I just starting back into scrapbooking after a break. Once I am on a roll, I am less dependent on them. I print off every Sketchy Saturday sketch and have them at the ready at the back of my scrap counter. I also use Page Maps, Scrap Happy, The ScrapRoom blog, Pinterest, and other sources. If I see a sketch I like, here or on Pinterest, I usually go to the website to see what else that person has designed. But I don't feel forced to do everything exactly like the sketch. I use the parts that appeal to me or that help me with a particular issue--arranging the photos, layering in an interesting manner, cluster creation--and then feel completely free to go on with my LO the way that best sets the mood and tells the story.

I have a 20 year old album of "Handmade Cards" I have received from friends, who have "cared to send the very best". I use those cards as inspiration to make my own cards, so maybe like sketches.

No, I do not. I do however usually see inspiration and will alter it to fit my needs/style. Like embellishments cluster or how they did the title or used washi or the paper combos.
Of course now that I am a pocket page scrapper, I get inspiration from cards/tags and embellishments.

Yes - I would say 9 times out of 10 I start my layout with a sketch. Almost always from Scrapbook Generation. I am also doing their current 4x6 sketch class. I may not follow the sketch exactly but I definitely use them as inspiration.

Almost always and usually Scrapbook Generation sketches. I've used them so long that on the times I don't use them, they still look like them because I've absorbed so many of their design principles.

I often use them for picture placement. Then I go from there.

I have put myself down as a "sometimes" on this one. I find that sometimes my layouts all start to look the same in terms of how I lay things out and scrap, so I like to use sketches to shake things up a bit. I have taken both of the most recent Scrapbook Generation sketch classes, so I use those. I also use a variety of sketches that I find on Pinterest. I have a board and I will scroll through it until I am able to find something that works for the number/sizes of photos that I have and then I just make it work.

Sometimes. I have saved sketches and notes from several Glitter Girl videos and also from a few of Shimelle's classes that I've taken. I keep a binder of l/o's & ideas that I've collected over the years and refer to them once in awhile.

I voted usually. I really like using sketches. Sometimes they're a spark and sometimes I get pretty close to the sketch design.

I checked "sometimes", as I don't use them very often but have been using them more now that I'm part of a challenge team and want to do the Sketchy Saturday challenges. Before that I rarely actually used the sketches the way they are intended - instead I just looked at them for inspiration and went from there with my own design, which was often an amalgam of ideas from several different sketches. Now I follow them more closely (as intended) when I'm using one for an SS challenge. FWIW, I never use sketches for cards, only SB pages. (You didn't specify on the poll, so I just thought I'd add that info.) My go to site for sketches is Pagemaps. I even use the archive to look at older sketches.

Mine is usually. For cards I almost always use a sketch but for layouts it depends. If I'm doing a 12x12 project album I'll use sketches but if I'm doing a pocket page or a smaller 6x8 album I won't. I'll sometimes adapt 12x12 sketches to a traveler's notebook as well.

I use them as a jumping off point. Something caught my eye in it. 9/10 times my cards/layouts look nothing like the sketch in the end lol

Rarely. Usually only for a challenge. I hardly ever remember to think of looking for a sketch.

Thanks for your responses. I like the security of having sketches more than actually using them. Like huskermom98 & cmpeter , I rarely take the time to search for a sketch before papercrafting; for me, it often becomes a "rabbit hole" rather than a time saver. On the rare occasion that I use a sketch, it's often just for photo placement like 950nancy . While I've collected sketches from numerous sources, my favorites are for (or can be easily adapted to) 4x6 photos, since I use this standard size photos 95% of the time, such as 4x6 Photo Sketch Blog (Amy Alvis), Sketch Savvy (Susan Stringfellow), & Serendipity Sketches (Miyuchi Kawakami). ETA: See the latest Sketchy Saturday 16 July 2022 post HERE.

PaperAngel, you mentioned Susan Stringfellow (Sketch Savvy). I love her layouts. I think I became a fan back in the old 2Peas days and have bookmarked several of her layouts. I've checked her blog several times in the last couple of years and it hasn't been updated in some time. I hope she's just found a new spot to post and that nothing bad has happened. So talented.

Agreed. Sketch Savvy (Susan Stringfellow) hasn't been updated recently. I welcome new sketches but, in the meantime, appreciate & try to maximize the existing sketches (e.g. rotate them, use each page of a 2-pager for single layouts) as inspiration for photo placement, etc. Perhaps other posters in the know will share whether the sketch artist is posting elsewhere or pursuing other creative interests.

Never. That's just not how my brain works, I can't look at a sketch and visualize things that way. I'm a pretty simple scrapper and tend to stick to 90 degree angles and parallel lines, a lot of my layouts probably have very similar core designs.

grammadee , I'm considering this (Sketchtember host) and will volunteer if I am able. Might be pressed for time since I think I'll be back to working full time again by September, so we'll see... Would love to have you on our planning team!
Would you have time to find four sketches and create a sample for each before the month of September? Then you could simply pop in the evening before "your" day to post the challenge and then whenever you can during the following week to respond to Peas who post on your thread....
