He was the sweetest boy, just turned 1 last month and I'm just so so sad about it. His parents (DD and her bf) are so heartbroken. I had a couple of past posts, one as we navigated his changing living situation and we worked it out really well so we took him when they had military training or demanding stretches at work, and he adapted great. He housebroke easily for us and him and my golden doodle bonded in a crazy close way. His parents missed him like crazy when he was gone, so while I would be willing to take him permanently if they ever needed, I was more than happy to just take him when needed. He was the focus of most of our conversations around here for many months, and it made me so happy that my DH took to him and the little guy seemed to prefer him (probably since his first few months were living with the 2 army boys).
More recently, I had asked about feeding and his Lyme's disease. He made it through his 30 days of antibiotics really well, although he definitely seemed like a slightly changed dog through it. Feeding was okay throughout but since his energy level was down he still managed to gain a little weight, which we thought was good. He went back home with his parents 2 weeks ago and we went up a week later to help them move. Little guy seemed okay, we ran around a bit and he did fine with it, and everything seemed to still be in line with what he was like after the Lyme's diagnosis. Unfortunately, he started vomiting and not wanting to eat much again this week. Since the vets are booked up they got him into the emergency vet and after doing an ultrasound and testing, come to find out he had a large cancerous mass that had attached to organs. They consulted with 2 vets and both gave surgery as an option, although neither recommended it. No guarantee they could get it all and that chemo or radiation would take afterward. Sadly, I think the Lyme's diagnosis ended up masking what was really going on. Not that you'd expect the cancer in a dog that just turned 1.
Like we all said, all the time about him, he was such a good boy. And they decided he was too good of a boy to suffer. We are all just so sad. I am not doing anything soon, going to give DD and her bf time time and space since their relationship has been a little rocky lately as it was, although now they are talking about getting another dog in a year. Once their situation gets sorted out, I would like to get a mini Aussie. I was blown away by how intelligent he was, and before his health decline, he was a perfect match for my golden doodle's energy and interaction levels.
