Strangest thing happened. We got home from work one day, and our glass patio table had completely exploded. there was glass everywhere. The only thing we can figure out is that we had hail one day this wk, and then it got hot, and maybe caused it to rupture? Now we have to decide what to do with the table.? try to find a replacement glass? or get a completely new one?

I've read news articles about it happening.
With the extreme heat forecast we have for the next few days, we have actually moved our glass table from it's centre of the garden, full sun position to a more covered, shaded place.

Can you even buy replacement glass for those? It might just be cheaper to get a whole new table.
I'm not surprised-- I haven't had it happen with a glass table, but the same thing happened to the sunroof in my DH's previous car. (it imploded, at 80 mph on the highway while I was driving it-- ack!!)
And similar things have happened with my windshield- I had a tiny divot in the glass (from a rock), I parked the car in the parking lot at work & put the sunshade in-- and by the end of the day when I walked back outside the windshield was toast / cracked all the way across. Extreme heat does weird things.

I’ve seen YouTube videos of this happening. I’ve seen ones both inside and outside shatter. One video is a guy working on his laptop on the table. People speculated that the heat from the laptop causes it to shatter.
Side note, we had a sliding glass door shatter. We don’t know how. We kind of think our cat at the time was sitting in front of it and a coyote hit the glass.

Yes.
We called the manufacturer and ordered a new glass in frame for 99 dollars. This was about 15 years ago.

No, but we had one flipped and shattered by straight line winds. And then the dog ran right into the glass and ripped up his paw, so we had to visit the emergency vet in the middle of terrible storms. And it was in the grass, so we had a heck of a time getting all the glass out of the grass so our poop pup wouldn’t get cut again.
Needless to say, no more glass tables for us!

Yes! It was such a mess to clean up. Ended up just replacing the table and no more glass.

Twice actually. Both times they were lifted up and slammed down by wind from thunderstorms when we weren’t home. One was on the lawn at the time. DH had fun vacuuming the lawn with the shop vac. We replaced with a new table both times. This time I finally found a table without a glass top. Something about fool me twice…

Mine shattered, but it was a 2 piece glass top. So one piece shattered when it blew out in a storm. I took the second piece in to our local welding shop that carries sheet metal. I had an aluminum piece cut to replace the top. I don't know why I only had one side done, and left the other side glass - but I had that piece blow out and land in my lane and shatter. God that's a mess to clean up! But now I have two sheets of aluminum in it to replace the glass. I MUCH prefer the aluminum! It's very sturdy, but still lightweight. It will not ever break. It cleans easily. If it gets weird, I just sprinkle it with Bar Keepers Friend and scrub it clean. Way better than glass. You might have to take the whole table to a sheet metal place, so they can make the pattern. But it is a better alternative than glass.

A friend of ours had 2 explode in the first summer he bought it. We had bought the same table, the same summer, and this is our 25th summer with the table. Guess we are lucky !

I think a big piece of safety glass would be super expensive. Pretty soon all the patio stuff will be on clearance, personally I’d just watch for sales and wait to get a new table.

I went to buy new cushions for some outdoor furniture. It was cheaper to buy new furniture!

Yes, last summer after 20+ years. I had it down on the grass because we just had a gathering and couldn't fit on the deck. So there I was with a shopvac vacuuming my grass. The one corner wasn't secure anymore so I don't know if the wind caught it.

Yes. We were in the kitchen when it happened without any known cause. It was within the first few months from purchase. Our patio store replaced the glass for free and it's been fine ever since (over 20 years). I have to admit I'm not sure they believed us but at least replaced it.
