I have never in my life put butter on a sandwich. Lots of butter on toast with jelly, but a sandwich needs Duke's Mayo! Yes, I'm from the south! ETA - I prefer white bread or a soft white hamburger bun.

I don't give sandwich making much thought. I've used butter, mayo, and miracle whip at different times. I don't have a set routine. I just grab what sounds good out of the fridge.
I am a bit confused about bread becoming soggy by not using butter as a barrier. I don't think I've ever had this issue unless it was really stuffed. Even then, it has to do more with what's inside.

We always had butter on our sandwiches.
You all may throw me off this board, but I have never eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My mother often made cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. Or cream cheese and olive sandwiches. Neither buttered…

well. in nz you can get mayo on french fries... Here in NZ you can also get them topped with sour cream + sweet chilli sauce, or with grated cheese+bacon chunks+gravy - my favourite!🤤 ☺️ I can go months without buying any butter. 😱 dh and I between us go through about 250g a week. Mostly we use it for hot buttered toast (sometimes as toast soldiers for dipping in a boiled egg) at breakfast and in fluffy riced potatoes (lately with chives and maybe some grated or cream cheese added).😁 Occasionally I'll have PB, honey, cinnamon and sliced banana, but there's plenty of fat from the PB so you don't need butter as well. That sounds good except for the honey part (I feel like that would make it too sweet for me) but I’d definitely still want my bread buttered.😝 Oh, and just for the record, when I was a child a bacon grease sandwich was a thing. Oh, again, a sandwich is known as a buttie for a reason! Neither dh nor I had heard of this until a few years ago when he was interviewing John McDermott (Scottish-Canadian singer), who happened to mention he was dying for a suet sandwich. Once he‘d explained to dh what it was dh was squeamish at the thought and asked him how he was able to sing like he does when he eats “rubbish” like that - he was told to “Go and talk to your Dad, big man, he’ll tell you!” FIL did tell him too.🤣 Honestly, we did try a bacon grease sandwich after that but neither of us cared for it. Now a bacon buttie, that’s a whole different story!😋 To answer librarylady ‘s question, my sandwiches are always buttered, and my favourite right now is curried egg + baby spinach or rocket leaves on whole grain bread, but younger ds prefers his without butter.🤷♀️ The only exception I can think of for myself would be for a grilled cheese sandwich which sometimes I will use mayo or garlic aioli instead of butter on the inside of the bottom slice but I always put butter on the outside of the top slice to get that lovely golden toasted finish. I also love a sliced tomato (with lashings of salt & freshly ground black pepper) + cucumber sandwich on white bread in summer. And a somewhat quirky favourite white bread sandwich from my childhood contained cucumber slices that had first been soaked in malt vinegar, yum!

My mom’s family did that - butter on sandwiches. Rural South Dakota. We actually laughed at her funeral because the church ladies brought ham sandwiches on buttered rolls to the lunch afterward - something none of us had eaten since visiting the family up there in the 80s.

Growing up my mom would put margarine on our school bag lunch sandwiches. I’m sure she originally used butter but switched to margarine after my dad was diagnosed with high cholesterol. She would only use it with ham, salami, bologna or turkey though, never pb&j. We almost always had pb&j. Sometimes she would try to give us braunschweiger sandwiches but that stuff is just nasty.
If given a choice of what to put on my bread, I’d probably pick butter 95% of the time if it was any of those kinds of meats (except braunschweiger because that’s just nasty and I won’t buy it). I probably would choose Miracle Whip second and plain mayonnaise last although I would eat it. DH would probably be the total opposite of my choices though. He would pick the mayo first and butter last on a sandwich.
For sandwich bread we only buy whole wheat bread but we will buy white hamburger or hotdog buns, Hawaiian buns and I make homemade Amish white bread loaves on occasion which disappears amazingly fast in my house.

I have only had butter on a green onion sandwich (I know, weird) and a peanut butter sandwich. I didn't like jam on my pb sandwiches when I was little so mine were only butter and peanut butter.
I like mayo on fries.
Each different meat or cheese sandwich gets a different condiment: turkey: mayo and mustard Roast Beef: horseradish and maybe mustard Ham: mustard Velveeta: Miracle Whip Cheese: Mustard BLT: mayo

East coast of Canada, grew up on butter, whole milk and, even though my mom was well known for her home made bread, regular sandwiches were always made on store bought white bread
I generally butter my sandwiches, plus also lots of mayo, plus a dash of honey mustard on a ham sandwich. 95% of my school lunches were sliced ham with mayo. By the time lunch came around my frozen mini-sip (juice in a plastic bag that you pierced with a straw, hoping not to pierce through to the other side!) would have thawed and my sandwich would be getting warm and to me, even better! (But not so warm for food poisoning lol). Tl this day, if I’m making myself a ham sandwich I pop it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to warm it up.
Grew up with miracle whip on sandwiches One day during a summer of tree planting while in university I had an exceptional sandwich experience and couldn’t figure out why this sandwich was so delicious. When I got home I figured out I had used a roommates Hellmans and was immediately converted! I also love mayo on fries! Dislike vegemite - butter can’t save a vegemite sandwich!
My mom is quite slim. You’d never guess the amount of butter she slathers on bread, toast, banana bread, etc. A treat sandwich she makes herself is a thick slab of homemade bread, tons of firm butter (not too soft, changes the butter flavor ratio lol) tons of brown sugar firmly pressed into the butter, topped off by pouring whipping cream over it all. She eats it with a knife and fork to sop up the whipping cream so probably it technically isn’t a true sandwich lol.
My current favorite sandwich is grilled Swiss cheese with apricot jelly. The weirdest sandwich on my menu is one my dad introduced me to, The egg and pickle sandwich - a “flat” egg (mix egg in a bowl to combine white and yolk and then fry flay, not scrambled) placed on white bread that has a layer of butter topped with sweet mixed pickles. The heat of the egg melts the butter in your mouth and the pickles are sweet and crunchy… Delicious!
I’ve read lots of great combos on the thread that I will try!

Home made soda bread spread with home made butter, Bramble jelly jam, and filled to bursting with fried crispy bacon. This is what I am craving because I cannot get to the kitchen and my mister can`t make the bread or butter. My pity party of one continues unfed.

well. in nz you can get mayo on french fries...my dad ate sandwiches every day for lunch. often brown goats cheese from norway or other cheese, or roast beast. could not eat mayo so had butter on sandwiches. on homemade wheat bread. he was a serious climber/skier/backpacker.. he always put butter on a peanut butter sandwich.. and his theory was that the butter gave you the extra strength to make it up the trail. he may have been correct.. lived to 95. I like neither butter or mayo on a sandwich.. maybe a hit of mustard. but never ate sandwiches til I was an adult.. I despised pb and j and my mom did not make them. My bff & I LOVE mayo on fries. To this day neither one of us can figure out how it started and we're the only 2 people we know who do this. I very rarely make a sandwich at home. DH liked to have them to take to work or have for lunch when he was home. IF I'm having a sandwich at home it's either bologna on white (nothing else) or turkey with american cheese and mayo on a roll. I can't tell you the last time I made a sandwich at home. Though now I'm in the mood for a turkey sandwich. May have to run down the street to the little hole in the wall deli/butcher/liquor/ grocery/hardware store and get one for lunch.

Mayo on fries is the default option in Belgium, and really common in the Netherlands, Germany and France as well. I now nearly always have my fries with mayo, but sometimes I'll mix mayo and tomato ketchup

If I’m at a restaurant it already comes that way so I eat it.

Y’all must not be Italian. We don’t put butter on much of anything. 😂
My sandwiches growing up were most often crusty Italian bread, salami, provolone, and some roasted sweet peppers on top. Wrapped in deli paper and aluminum foil.
Or when they were in season, fresh figs sliced with cheese. Or asparagus and scrambled eggs. But never ever on soft white bread and no butter in sight.

To be fair, probably not many things need it but it's just lovely A good quality, proper butter is just delicious - we get through lots in our house and that's without the sandwiches which we don't actually eat many of anyway

I like butter AND PB as it helps the pb slide down better and not stick.
But I've never had a meat sandwich with butter. However many years ago dd started asking me to make her roast beef sandwiches with butter for school lunches at times. She had tried them at a friend's house and liked them. She will still eat that very occasionally.

No butter unless its grilled cheeese... i also can not imagine mayo on a grilled cheese... even if they are both fats... they do not taste the same... I also enjoy mayo in my potato or chicken salad... Also just me... but i do not like sourdough... i went to San Francisco and my friend was like you have to try the sourdough... i do not like the flavor and i dont like how chewy it is... i feel like i hurt my jaw chewing up a piece of sourdough... lol of course my friend was shocked... but not a fan I also do not like sourdough for the same reasons. My DH loves it and doesn't get my dislike.

I do not like butter on my sandwich. I love just bread and butter. l prefer my sandwiches on rolls or a crusty baguette type bread. I only like mayo on turkey sandwiches. Oil and vinegar or Italian dressing on ham. Rarely anything with mustard. Other types of sandwiches it depends. My go to is shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles. I had PBJ sandwiches growing up. I really only have it on toast now days. Not that I don’t like it. My babysitter also gave us cream cheese and jelly sandwiches on Millbrook white squishy bread. It was okay but not a favorite. To me the best part of the sandwich is a perfect roll, crusty but not too hard would be my first choice.
One of my favorite sandwiches ever is the Chancellor from Henry VIII Carvery in Kittery, Maine. I crave that sandwich and they weren’t open the days I was there the last time. It is basic but oh oh so good…Chilled turkey breast with avocado, bacon, lettuce, balsamic onion relish and mayonnaise on a toasted garlic-buttered roll
ETA - I just notice the irony (hypocrisy?) of my favorite sandwich on a buttered roll and my do not like it on sandwiches comments. Toasted is the key word here, it then becomes acceptable in my world. 😆😉

no to butter and no to white bread. sourdough or baguette is as close as i would go but never white sandwich bread is <blech>.
i had a pre-made sandwich from the grocery store the other day and it was buttered. it was gross and ruined the sandwich. don't get me wrong, i love butter! toast, corn, popcorn, mashed potatoes, etc... but not sandwiches.

I like mayo and miracle whip. They each have their own use in my kitchen. Growing up, all sandwiches were white wonder bread. If we ever got wheat, that was a treat! PB N J was just that, nothing else. I would eat butter and chunky peanut butter sandwiches. Liverwurst and cheese Tuna was buttered bread and the tuna salad Bologna, cheese and miracle whip BLT was buttered toast and miracle whip SO's lunch sandwich is 12 grain bread, mayo, roasted chicken or turkey, romaine lettuce, tomato and red onion. I still eat PB N J or just PB! I love just ham with buttered bread.
