I use my Xyron (both the 5 and 9 inch) permanent adhesive quite a bit for both scrapbooking and cardmaking. When I tried to restock both seem to be out of stock everywhere I googled online. I finally got one roll online at Etsy. I will have to be more selective about when I use it. Fortunately I was able to order refills for my tape runner.

I might be wrong, but I thought most of the xyron refills were essentially discontinued years ago. Even before the pandemic. I say discontinued because they were advertised but out of stock. I have the xyron X and a 5” machine that I haven’t used in ages. I’ve switched to adhesive rolls like these: www.scrapbook.com/store/uc-adh-2705.htmlIt looks like these rolls are about 40% off right now.

I bought a roll of a different band - off brand from Amazon - and the paper on it is too thick and tough! I love my Xyron for intricate dies because it's so easy to use. The adhesive I bought has a backing that is too thick for my thin dies to cut through. I've tried with my Cuttlebug, AG Empress and Gemini. No matter what the plate sandwich and shims I use, I can not get a clean cut.

I will say I much prefer liquid glue for intricate dies because there is a little bit of time to move and adjust the die cut. In my opinion, the Barely Arts glue with the precision tip is the best adhesive for intricate dies. I’ve also used it a lot where I adhere it to copy paper, pull off the backer and add cardstock strips to the adhesive then die cut it with shape and word dies. I’ve never had any issues cutting thru it. The scrapbook.com rolls definitely stick immediately. It’s not at all like the Altenew adhesive sheets where you can move it around until you burnish it and it sticks.

pepperwood , I found the 1.5 inch refills in stock through the xyron site: LINK. I know you're looking for the 5" and 9" though - if you scroll down on the page I linked, xyron says they are not discontinued, just having major supply issues. They hope to have the other sizes back in stock by fall; some maybe as early as August. I also use my Xyron a lot, mostly for small/intricate titles and other embellishments I've cut with my Cameo. I currently only have the 1.5" (Xyron X) but have thought about adding the 5" - it's so convenient. Thank you for linking alternative adhesive rolls, pinklady - those would work for some things, but for me they couldn't be a full replacement since I don't run anything through a machine that uses dies. I can see them being very handy for simple (read hand-cuttable) shapes though since you could just stick and trim as needed.

I’ll give your technique a try soon. There are a few other things I would like to order from scrapbook.com, so I think I’ll also add on a roll of their adhesive tape just for comparison. I have a new, unopened bottle of Bearly Arts glue so I need to try that, too. I bought it to replace the Art Glitter glue I usually use. I keep losing the stainless steel pin for the Glitter Glue and decided to try the BA glue to see how they compare. Thanks!

It was actually a video from scrapbook.com where I got the idea. Using a paper piercer to delicately lift up the intricate dies helps too.

On Amazon.ca, the price of an X sticker maker refill (1.5") ranges from eight for $69 to $49 each! I have started using Sticky Specks adhesive sheets for fine items.

I have started using Sticky Specks adhesive sheets for fine items. that's crazy!! i still have that X maker and have some refills left, thank goodness. the cost of my 12" cartridges are over $100 for 100 feet. now it seems kind of like a steal when compare to the prices of the itty bitty X refills.
