realized you don't have the tool you wanted to use to make the card? I had a card design in mind using the hexagon nesting die set I **know** I have. Well I look thru all my dies and cannot find it so I open Evernote & search and sure enough, I do not own a hexagon nesting die set! I have every other shape known to man but no hexagons. Needless to say they have been ordered.

LOL! Usually I can't find it, I order a new one, and then I find the lost one.

Just went through this yesterday with a bow die I was SURE I had. I did eventually find it stored with my Christmas supplies (it was part of a wreath die set) instead of in my die storage binders.

Not yet. But it's bound to happen. I'm new enough to cardmaking that I can still pretty much recall what I own. I give it another 6 months before I have the same problem I do have a nesting hex set, I went on a spree at AE and bought a bunch of different shaped nesting dies back when I first started in March. Have I used it yet? Nope. Sigh. I have a feeling that cardmaking is going to be like wearing clothing. I use 20% of the supplies I own 80% of the time.

MichyM my friends and I have a pact...anything we purchase in the year has yo be used at least once. So for example...if it's a stamp set, at least 1 stamp has to be used...new cardstock or pattern paper, at least 1 sheet has to be used from a pack. It has helped so much.

I don’t live near any LSS. Even the hobby stores are a bit of a drive. I am more likely to adapt in some way, especially since I have a huge stash. I don’t like to wait for a delivery to finish a project. If I am in the mood to make a card, and I don’t have everything I need, I will definitely adapt or do something entirely different.
Would I use the missing item as an excuse to place an order for something I really want, though? Without a doubt.

It has happened to me, after I had drooled over some item in a store or on line and then decided I didn't need it. Sometimes it stays in my head as if I had actually purchased it . I have also gone out and purchased an item that I discover later I had already owned!

Yes, it's happened to me recently even. I was working on a build-up castle set and wanted to extend one of the towers, only to come to the conclusion I don't own any rectangles thin enough to work. And while I could just cut down the cardstock manually I prefer the rounded edges of a die cut. Needless to say there were some AE purchases made that day. I try to buy things that cover all my bases especially in basic shapes, but there are still a few hidden gaps in my die collection it seems. I actually used a hexagon cut in half (and a wave border) on the same project to make a roof for one of the castle sections.

Eating my words here……I am working on a project, and realized that sometimes there are times when you simply can’t improvise or substitute. For example, green, blue, purple, etc. are not a substitute for a skin tone, unless you are doing Baby Yoda, in which case you still need the right shade of green.
I hunted for what I needed at the local craft stores but didn’t find quite the right colors. I was able to get what I need online, thankfully, although the last item won’t arrive till tomorrow, and I won’t be sure the colors are what I hoped till they come. Sometimes the appearance of colors online can be deceptive.
