Poll added...multiple response allowed.
Saw a cartoon belittling accordion players...
I think a person has to be quite skilled to play one.

It's an interesting instrument, but I don't like the sound of it.

I’ve just never heard anyone play one that I liked the sound. I’m sure it takes skill, but if the instrument itself is annoying, I don’t want to hear it.

Never had an interest in playing on and yes I agree I do not like its sound.
I can however play the piano, clarinet, trumpet, sax, flute.

My elementary music teacher played the accordion frequently. I don't mind them, but I haven't heard one live in years...

My mom played the accordion in marching band as a teen. I’m grateful she no longer had one by the time I was around.

I don't like music played on the accordion so I would never want to learn to play. This is a hard no for me.

The accordion is very popular in Scottish ceilidh bands, so whenever I hear one, I just want to get up and dance! 😄

DH's grandpa played one. He was a precious, joyful man, so I relate all things accordion with him and it makes me smile.
He was self taught and enjoyed going to polka festivals. At our wedding, he played "Let me call you sweetheart", "Roll out the barrel" and of course, the "Chicken Dance." Since he passed, we always play a polka at family weddings in his honor.

DH learned to play the accordion as a preteen. I'm sure it was either his mom's choice and/or because someone in the Greek community was offering lessons and there was pressure to send a child or two. DH dropped it as soon as he could. One of DD's friends is extremely musically talented and plays multiple instruments. I occasionally see her post something on SM but she is the only accordion player I know IRL.

The community next to the one where I grew up was almost entirely Czech so there was lots of polka music there and some accordion players.
Their community hall had a dance every Saturday night and sometimes we went to the dances.

My dad had one when I was growing up and I learned a couple notes but wouldn’t say I could play. We had a few available in music class so if you weren’t quick enough that’s what you were stuck with during class. They’re heavy!

We inherited a nice one. None of us can play it. We hired an accordion player to sing at my daughter's graduation party. He was 18 years old at the time and going to school to study opera. He was fantastic.

I should also mention that I have attended a polka church service. All of the music was played on an accordion. Songs like Roll Out the Barrel were played with lyrics changed. My daughter was probably about first grade age and I remember her saying, "Church was really fun today." I loved it too. A lot of churches in our area will have one polka service a year. I live in an area where quite a few people know how to play them. We went to a local bar & grill not too long ago and a guy brought his accordion and played while he sat at the bar. He wasn't hired to do this and it was welcomed.

My late mother owned one. She played the accordion and the piano. Before she was married, she and a friend would go to Chicago for paying gigs at parties, Bar Mitzvahs and occasionally, bars. She still had her accordion while I was growing up. I have no idea what happened to it. I do have the spinet piano that my dad bought her later in life even though I no longer play myself. I just can’t seem to give it up.

I agree that they require skill to play, but it's not a skill I'm interested in acquiring.
That said, I grew up listening to Lawrence Welk at my grandparents' house, and if pressed, I can manage a decent polka.

One of my favourite bands since the late 80s is an Australian folk rock band called Weddings Parties Anything. One of the band members, who is known as Squeezebox Wally, ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) plays the accordion. So I have a fondness for the instrument. None of my friends back then liked the band, mainly because they couldn't get past the idea of an accordion in a rock band! So I never got to see them live until they did a reunion tour in 2010 and DSO and I went. librarylady I think that disparaging cartoon you mentioned has been shared on the band's Facebook page a few times! Away AwayThe band has also given me a great love of the violin. Woman of Ireland

Lawrence Welk!!!! Does anyone even know who that was? Of course, I know who Lawrence Welk was!! My uncle played the accordion for house parties and wedding dances (and he had groupies, lol). At my parents' wedding dance, my uncle played a waltz that is played in the Gundbrandsdalen region (where both my grandfathers emigrated from) in honor of my mother.

I was started out on an accordion, then a piano, then an organ, and than a guitar. The accordion, organ and guitar are still in my house.

I know two people that can play the accordion. One is my cousin that can play more instruments than I can name. The other has played for the Queen of England.

Lawrence Welk!!!! Does anyone even know who that was? My son has always been into music. My stepdad used to tell him that his father had played accordion with Lawrence Welk and that my son could have his accordion someday. When my stepdad passed away, my sister-in-law found the accordion while visiting Mom and reminded her that Dad wanted my son to have it, so she gave it to my son. Over the course of the next few weeks and months, we found 3 more accordions. All found their way to my son. Later on, when we were helping my mom get ready to replace her flooring, we found printouts from eBay for each accordion. None of them was a family heirloom (none looked that old anyway), my stepdad had just developed an obsession with accordions. He never learned how to play one. The accordions are in their cases which are now stacked in my living room as an end table.

My brother’s first instrument/lesson was the accordion. Then the piano, and ultimately played trumpet in elementary and middle school. For some reason, us girls didn’t get to learn as many. I only played the clarinet and my sis never learned an instrument. Larger mariachi bands have an accordion, so my dad likes the sound and made my brother learn it.

Night before last I heard a jazz trio with a special guest accordion player. He was fabulous! I’d never heard it played like that. Yes, jazz accordion.
I love world music and accordion is part of so much of it, Celtic, French, Cajun, Italian, Eastern European.
