I don't find this funny at all. It's not halloween and the movie is about an evil killer doll. The parents of this 5 year old have serious issues if they think this is funny.

I have worked in Preschool for 20 plus years. Every year, every classroom had at least one child that would talk about Chucky or Leprechaun or some other horror movie that was in no way appropriate for children. I don't know if because it has a doll or otherwise cute character parents thought it was ok for their child to watch, but every year I had a least one, if not more. It really made me hate Halloween time.

The Halloween Horror themed coffee shop 1 city over has a Chucky Doll and dd was so excited (as well as for the other stuff they have). Definitely too hot but holy crap it's a costume. |

My first thoughts were similar to most of yours... 1. Too dang hot for any costume, never mind running around outside in it! And 2. A kid that young should have no idea who Chucky even is.  |

I don’t know so much if it’s geared for kids but the main actor is a high schooler who buys the OG Chucky doll at a garage sale. Chaos ensues but the kid and Chucky kind of become buds in a way. If it's the parents' idea, I think they have terrible judgement. according to the story, it was the kid's Halloween costume last year, and he likes wearing it when he's walking around the neighborhood keeping an eye on things. Which I think leans to the 'bad parenting' side of the spectrum for both- buying him the costume, and letting him run around in it now. For some reason, it strikes me as being really similar to the kids who were running around in clown costumes, hiding in the woods- was that a few years ago?? Seems like it's a bit on purpose for the (negative) attention it's getting him. |

It looks like it might be a teenage kid. Honestly, their brains aren't developed and they do stupid things. , the story says it's a neighborhood kid who is FIVE years old. It even has a photo of him. |

So when the movie first came out I was in high school. My much younger brother had a my buddy doll. My grandparents lived 45 mins away and occasionally my parents and brother would stay there for the weekend.
WELLLLLL, one weekend his my buddy went missing bc that doll was freaking me out! That thing went in the trash!! I confessed several years later when my brother was in high school.
I would probably run someone over if I saw this randomly walking the streets.
And I do love most horror moves, just not Chucky!

Well, and if it is the child in the story's costume, he was 4 (or close to it) last Halloween. I, personally, wouldn't be scared by the weird kid running around in the costume, but 1) if you read the article, it is the child's "neighborhood watch" outfit. What 5 y.o. thinks it is his job to conduct a neighborhood watch; and 2) I have a large number of kids in my immediate community who are on the Autism spectrum and this would scare the living crap out of them. Especially since there is no context to put it in - it isn't Halloween, so why does that kid look so frightening? I mean, the kid can wear what he wants to, and I can judge if I want to too. I hope that the parents have given him business cards with the house phone number on it so that neighborhood parents with kids who have issues with it (I imagine there are a number of neurotypical children scared too) can call the parents and have the parents explain to their children why their child chooses to roam the neighborhood (without an adult, if the picture is accurate and not cutting out the parents) as a horror movie character. |

This is the type of sheltered childhood that I'm glad I didn't have, looking through that Gen X thread. We watched all the scary movies. Nothing like running through the corn after watching Children of the Corn for scary.
Also lots of kids know who Chucky is without having seen the movie, same with Jason, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers back in the day.

If I saw that, I think my first reaction would be surprised laughter, since it's so unexpected. Not because it's funny to me.
I also don't think a small child would have to be familiar with the Chucky movie/s or series or even doll to be scared seeing that on his block. That thing is creepy, with its disproportionate head & horrible facial expression, and people wearing full-face masks on the street in July aren't likely to be doing community service work.
I have no problem with good, clean fun, but I don't think frightening children is funny or kind. Goodness knows there's little enough time for them to feel safe in the world these days.

I don't think a 5 year old should know who Chucky is and shouldn't be randomly walking around the neighborhood like that because, yes, it could scare young children.
That said I have seen parents dress a one or two year old child up for Halloween like this. Carrying around the neighborhood. We found it funny and it's clearly for the parents, not the child who surely isn't watching Chucky movies or know who Chucky is. Or even what Halloween is about.

I agree, anyone that has been to a Halloween Spirit Store would have seen these costumes. Heck, even Target carries some of them. Some kids just aren't freaked out by things that adults are. We have a former 4 year old in our family who loved all the scary stuff at Spirit without any context of what it was. Her big brother hated it all. Neither of them had ever seen anything scary and grew up exposed to the same things. She loved trying on the masks, he would jump 10 feet in the air and ask her to take them off. Obviously someone would take him to the kid section while she looked at the stuff she liked. She used to talk about "It" like she knew what it was, even though all she really knew was that he is a clown. She delighted in just whispering the name Chucky to scare her brother. Hell, I have had kids in my class who were scared of my Jack Skellington clothes, so I couldn't wear them to school when they were there. Other kids LOVE that movie. My nephew used to hate Target at Halloween because of the animatronic Halloween things. Terrified him. He hated Scooby Doo because it was scary. Some kids are just flat out afraid of costumes. One of my former students never came to school on Halloween because she was terrified of costumes. Her parents said even Santa Claus and mascots scared her to pieces. Even her own sisters dressed up scared her. All that to say, kids are weird. It is up to parents to say, "this isn't for you" though, I do agree with that. |
