Hi - I hope you don't mind a question from someone who doesn't usually frequent this board, but I'm frustrated and at the end of my rope. I have used Photoshop Elements for years for editing pics and digital scrapping. I'm really used to it!
Edited - Please feel free to ignore this. (I deleted the rest because you really didn't need the details!) After much angst I realized I could get it to work by simply ignoring the "You will die and your computer with you if you do not reinstall this immediately" message. Who knew? Sometimes it pays to be a rule breaker.

I know what you mean about being used to software that you love and want to keep using. It sounds like you are still able to use it, so you must be relieved. There are times when it pays to ignore warning messages.

I know what you mean about being used to software that you love and want to keep using. I still like a very old Microsoft program (Digital Image Suite) .. I figured out how to install it on my Windows 11 computers! LOL I still hang on to it. I do use Lightroom from my iPhone and other programs to do a lot of things, but I still return to DIS. I wish they had never discontinued that program!

Thanks for the responses. I'm back because the error message wasn't lying. It lulled me into a false sense of security before dropping the anvil and refusing to print or save any files I created. So, I'm back to square one. Thank you teacherlisa,I am going to look into Affinity and I also read about Gimp. Does anyone have any experience with Gimp?

GIMP is free, open source, but also has a lot of quirks and a learning curve many find hard coming from the Photoshop environment. I'm servicable with it, but it's not my preferred application. I'd cast my vote for Affinity Photo as the closest replacement that you only have to buy once and doesn't try to charge you an arm and a leg and a kidney and your first born... every few years. I also like krita.org/en/ krita, but it's more art focused than photo editing. It's also free and open source, which is a plus. No bar to entry. I do have my quibbles with Affinity. The shortcuts take a bunch of re-configuring to get aligned with what my muscle memory says the various tools should be mapped to (that's a 'me' problem though). The zoom works a bit differently, the selection tools are kludgey when it comes to anti-aliasing, it doesn't destructively crop, you can't pull a second document apart from the interface to work side-by-side, and layers lack transparency lock, it has to be manually toggled on the tool. There's no pixel tiling options with a brush or otherwise, its export/save could be better. It's lacking in a lot of the small things Photoshop makes you take for granted, but it's still better than getting reamed in the pocketbook monthly by Adobe's thugs.

I use Gimp and love it! But I am pretty new at using it, so it would be generous to describe my Gimp skills as mediocre. I still have a lot to learn about it, and that is about the understatement of the year.
The people in the Gimp subforum at Reddit are pretty generous with their time in answering Gimp questions, if you get stuck.
I am a Photoshop power user -- learned Photoshop 2.0 in design school in 1997 and kept up with it for years because I often had to use it for work (textile design). I am mostly a paper scrapper, and am just messing around with digital -- just started with that in September. I have found that I can do most things in Gimp that I would have done in Photoshop in the past, but not everything.
Gimp also has some stuff that Photoshop doesn't, which is interesting. If you're into blending, Gimp is worth checking out, because it has extra blend modes that Photoshop doesn't have.
Embri, thanks so much for the info on Krita! I will definitely check that out.

I used Picasa for years - even after it could no longer be updated or even downloaded. I used PhotoShop for awhile but I was never able to master it. I'm using Photo Pad Image Editor now. I an still climbing the learning curve but there is one feature that I really, really like. It's the de-blur function. What a game changer! At least for me.
