I am trying to reign in my app subscriptions I am really using to support my scrapbooking and hoping to get some advice. Right now, I have photos in Smugmug, Google Photos, iPhoto and Dropbox. I also have an Adobe Photo app combo with Lightroom and PS, although I don't really use Photoshop, but aspire to . Anyway, I'd love to know how others are consolidating and using apps strategically. I know I want to keep iPhoto storage since I take most of my pics with my phone, but I also want a back up. I have 20+ years of photos in SmugMug, so not sure if I really want to move all of those somewhere else, but I also feel like maybe 1 other cloud storage option as a back up. We also have Amazon Prime so I see they have photo storage, but don't know much about it. Definitely need to cut some subs, just not sure which ones. Would love input! Julie

I back up my digital photos in 3 places--Photos, Dropbox, and a remote hard drive. IMO, the remote hard drive is the least desirable. But I need to get a new (faster) Mac to really transfer those photos to another platform. That will come this fall or winter.
The trouble with physical back ups (printed photos, remote hard drive) is that they can be left behind or lost in a flood/fire/other evacuation. The trouble with digital platforms is that the companies can dissolve or change platforms/fees (we're all looking at you, Photobucket). So I like having the two different formats. I do pay attention to any news coming from places like Apple and Dropbox because I don't want to lose those backups.
But 99% of the time I use Photos because it's just so easy.

If you are a prime member photo storage is an included benefit and can be automatic with your iPhone pics. Also if you have any show devices digital albums can be set up/played on those device. I love that. Google photos is also automatic/free and I use them as well. I recently dropped Dropbox. I thought photos, google and amazon was enough lol. If you have a Persnickity prints account, they offer free storage as well. (I don’t use that, just mentioning it) I also have a hard drive back up of my photos and digital supplies. I have printed all my most important photos also- lets not forget that as a “back up” So, between the hard drive, the 3 clouds, my devices themselves and my prints… I feel both psychotic and safe

I agree with having a hard drive as an alternative, in case a company changes their policy or dissolves. I keep mine in my fireproof box with my very important documents.

A point of note for prospective safe purchases: only specific classes of fireproof safes are rated for digital storage. Make sure your chosen model is up to the task. Paper and other documents are far better at surviving heat than most electronics.

In that case, I'd expect that online storage would be my back up.

I use google and amazon prime for online photo backup. Plus, I have persnickety prints from all the photos I've had them print. I also have 3 external backups. 1 I carry with me. My mac is so old that I can't keep them on there, plus I take way too many photos, it would slow my mac down.
