Ever since my aunt died on the 23rd, I smell cigarette smoke nightly outside on the back porch. No one in the house smokes. Nor do neighbors. Aunt was a heavy smoker, and would smoke on the back porch when she was visiting. My Mom will smell it too every once in a while.

Yes, my dad wore “Old Spice” after shave and sometimes when home alone, I get a big whiff of it although none is in the house. I think it is their way of letting us know they are still with us.

I’m sorry about your aunt.
My dad died last October and a couple of weeks ago, I was waiting in the car to pick my dh up at the dr office. When I turned on the car, I smelled my dad’s aftershave. I was shocked at first and then I sniffed the air 3 more times to make sure, but that’s exactly what I was smelling. And then it went away. I like to think he was there with me.

My father also used a few Old Spice products and I have smelled it in my home once in a while. It makes me feel happy when I do detect it. As you say, like they are letting us know they are still around for us. cecilia, I'm sorry about the loss of your aunt. I would probably sit out on the porch when I smelled the cigarette smoke and talk to her.

Wow, this really sent me through my memories of moments like this. I was dwelling in them for a moment and I really like Lexica's idea of talking to her on the porch when you smell the smoke. I'm so sorry you lost her.

My mom loved shrimp but NEVER, Never, never brought any into her kosher home. While cleaning out her closet, we found a shrimp tail on the floor. It completely freaked us out. One time I was watering her plants and the lamp on the same table randomly turned on and off a few times.

I call it memory smells.
After my grandma passed I would smell certain scents that were not around.
Our brains are unique things and I honestly think they can trigger what I call memory smells.

My BIL was in a roll-over one vehicle crash many years ago when he lived in England (Air Force). He swears that as the accident happened he got a very strong whiff of the pipe tobacco his favorite grandfather used to smoke. He'd been gone several years and never set foot in that car. He says he knew in that moment that he'd be okay.

We lost one of our cats in March. Before he passed he was ill for a long time, and one of his symptoms was peeing next to the box instead of in it. He had hind end weakness, and so he would often sit or fall in the puddle and then of course get pee on himself and he would come to me to clean him up.
After his death, for a couple weeks I would randomly smell pee in places and at times when there was definitely no pee and then it would be gone without a trace. DH had the same experience.

Hugs to you. I remember my grandma telling me stories about smells after her family members passed. I know smell is a sense strongly related to memory.
Not smells but after my mom passed from an unexpected brain aneurysm we were driving home from the hospital and a streetlight just in front of us popped and fizzled out as we’re were driving under it. The next day I had an ultrasound (was 4 months pregnant with her first grandchild when she passed) and same thing happened to a streetlight. Well since then (2005) we moved provinces and it still happens, in fact it happens so often that people driving with me have even noticed the strange event.
I haven’t shared with too many the connection i believe it has. I like to think it’s my moms spirit saying hi and that she’s always with me.

Omg as I’m reading this DH casually mentions my car smells like cigarettes so I read him the OP, and he goes yep is smells like his grandfathers Toyota station wagon. Weird. But yes I have similar things happen too.
