I don't believe. I don't disbelieve. I think George Carlin was right when he said, "you go where ya think you're gonna go".

Anything's possible. Certainly as plausible as a great Arbiter in the sky, raining down either blessings or lamentations - depending upon how hard one prays.

I believe in heaven and hell. But on the other hand I love George Carlin's comment "You go where ya think you're gonna go" that scrapmaven posted.

I have considered myself a spiritual person who is learning about Buddhism. I grew up in the Catholic church so I was pretty much raised on the heaven and hell narrative. Since learning about Buddhism I absolutely thought I believed in reincarnation. Sounds like a truly beautiful scheme to keeping reliving until you actually achieve a state of Nirvana.
For a while after Esther died I felt her around me. I dreamed of her. I thought I felt her presence. I read the first post yesterday of that grief thread and backed right out. Because I haven't felt her presence around me in a while. Damn, now I'm crying. Chloe says she feels her presence around her.
I'll just tell you at this point I'm not sure what to believe. I absolutely don't and won't ever believe when we die, it's just over. But I could honestly say based on where I feel I am right now, reincarnation looks mighty attractive. Because for whatever reason, I no longer feel Esther. And right now it's just breaking my heart.
I keep saying maybe Chloe needs her more. To feel her more. Or maybe she just isn't wanting to come back to this earth and see us suffering. Or maybe she's just moving on into another life now.
Either way, I had hoped I would continue to feel her presence. And I don't feel like I do.

I’m so sorry jeremysgirl I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child. I’m not religious at all, but I do like to think that we retain some connection to those we’ve loved, although I won’t pretend to understand in what ways that might be. Whenever we find pennies on the ground we always say they’re from MIL (a story too long to post here). Maybe that’s true. Or maybe just this random trigger that makes us think about MIL and smile is our gift.

If one believes that there's an all-powerful God, then it stands to reason that this would be within his power. There's no way of knowing if He uses it, or not, IMO.
I understand most Christian religions not wanting to present this as a reality to their flocks--it might lead to being less fearful of their purported punishment/rewards system. The Christian Science church addressed this by saying, "One doesn't return to positions outgrown," but who's to say that one has outgrown being human if he hasn't experienced all the variations and experiences that can offer?
Personally, I hope so, if only as an opportunity for karmic justice.

There's a lot that I have trouble reconciling with those verified reports of little kids who remember being other people. It freaks me out. So my vote is that I think it might be possible. But I don't understand how it would work mathematically with the increasing number of people.
I try to keep a balance between "openminded" and "don't be so openminded your brains fall out."
The idea of it really does freak me out.

((( JG ))) What works for me is, I try really, really hard to imagine their presence near me. They may or may not be there, but I get comfort in sensing/ assuming, if you will, that they are with me. I’m so very sorry for your pain and loss. ❤️

The idea of it really does freak me out. In Buddhism, you are not necessarily reincarnated in the same form. So, theoretically, some of us could have been insects in previous lives. You essentially keep leveling up (or down) with each reincarnation until you reach Nirvana. Sometimes you’ll hear people joke about something like “I hope he comes back as a roach so I can step on him.” I don’t know if I really believe in reincarnation or not. I truly don’t know what happens to us after death. ETA - As for our souls wandering the earth for 40-49 days before moving on, I sort of believe in that. I don’t know if it is a “soul” or some energy, but I do feel that energy stays around for a little while.

I do not believe in reincarnation. I’m a Christian FWIW. In my opinion of course it would be *possible* for God to do but I don’t believe, based on the Bible, that is what he does. I also don’t believe in feeling a passed one’s presence or seeing signs from from them. I haven’t had that experience and it also doesn’t align with my belief system. I know I’ll see my dd in heaven someday. I also want to say that I don’t feel “100% no way do these things not happen.” I just strongly feel they don’t but would not be surprised to find out someday they did sometimes. We can’t know everything! It’s kind of like how I feel about big foot. 😂 I don’t believe it’s true, but wouldn’t be totally shocked to find out I was wrong and it’s true after all.

Yeah that bigfoot thing. I kinda doubt it but I want to believe it. Unless I am in a tent out in the woods. Then I am TEAM NO SUCH THING.

I have no religion but Buddhist and Humanist leanings. I don’t know if I believe in reincarnation or not but there are so many things we don’t yet understand, who knows?
When my second DGD was born and I held her for the first time just a few hours later, the very first thing I said was “I know this child”. The feeling of having met her before, having had a previous relationship with her was so strong it was intense. She was born on the anniversary of my mother’s death so who knows?

They believe in hell & wish their enemies to go, until they want to do something that their religion tells them would send them there. I sometimes think that without the ability to cherry-pick beliefs for convenience, there would be no organized religion at all.

I don't think any of us know anything first-hand about this subject, so my mind is open. I have had a few experiences that make me even more open-minded to it.

Would love to hear these experiences, if you'd be inclined to sharing. One of my kids had one of those "creepy" moments where they talked of their previous life. She talked about her "story" and "how will 'this' story end" and it was sufficiently weird to make me not nearly as cynical as I once was.

Never say never, but I have a hard time believing it. And if I’m honest, thinking about it makes me uneasy.

DH says I drowned on titanic in a previous life. I have an irrational fear of water but I also love the history of titanic and the time period. I also own a replica of a ring they found on titanic, not sure why but I was very drawn to it and I’m not a fancy jewelry person.

When my brother was around 4, he is 37 now, told my grandparents he wanted to go to the cemetery to ‘see his buddies from the war’. they took him and never found his buddies, but with that story my family has always wondered.
Interestingly enough he is in the Air Force now.

Not really, but I guess it’s as plausible as anything else people have come up with to try to explain what happens when we die.

There is a quote that comes to mind--- "you only live once. But if you live it right, once is enough."

When I was a baby in my crib, I would cry when I heard fire engines. Not police or ambulance, just fire. When I got a little older, I had a terrible fear of fire. No candles on my birthday cakes, no fires in the fireplace, nothing. I was way too young to have a reasonable fear of fire and there was nothing in my past to explain it. My mom and I are convinced I must have died in a fire in a past life.

When I was about 9 I went on a school trip abroad to a country I'd never been to. I freaked the teachers out by talking about the town as we walked around because I knew what was around the next corner etc.

I think it is plausible. When my cousin’s son was little (up until he was about 7), whenever they drove past a certain McDonald’s (not just any one, but one location in particular), he would point at it and say, “Look, there is the McDonald’s where I used to work”. One day, when he was about 2, she went in with him to eat lunch and he asked the cashier “Where is Jim?” - the cashier said “He is off today” - my cousin asked her son, “Who is Jim”?” - he said “The manager” She was thinking to herself, how does my 2 year old know what a manager is? The cashier said, Yes, he is the manager, but he’s off today.”
As he grew older, he stopped saying he worked there….just makes you wonder.
