There is one I really like, but it is $21.99!
I tried to do a poll, but failed miserably.

I’ve spent that much on a die that covers the whole card space (4.25 x 5.5). Only once. And I don’t regret it. It’s fairly generic so I can use for a variety of seasons/cards.

If it's a complex cover plate die I'll spend that much, especially if it's really versatile and something I love. Probably not much more than that, and I'm less likely to buy anything lately. It would also have to be from a company that I want to support. I just checked the MFT site which I've purchased from before and their "cover up" dies are $28-31. I don't think I have spent that much and don't think I would at this point.

It's not a cover plate, just a flower!

For a flower, probably not.
Personally, I’d look for it on AliExpress. It’s worth the wait for me if I can find it for $4. If I can’t find it there, then I’d make the decision to wait for a sale or buy. The company selling is a factor too.
What die is it? If it’s something I have, I’d be happy to send you a few.

Well, I bought a $29 leaf die (yes, a single die, and not even a cover die) that I've been coveting for months during the SSS 20% sale a bit ago. I think it was over the 4th of July holiday. It was painful to do so, and it'll be a long time before I do so again. I will admit to thinking that the price is WAY out of whack for what it is. And I think that the manufacturers, particularly those who design and sell straight to the consumer (under their own label), are completely ripping off their customers with their pricing on dies, and blending blushes, and a few other things...

I would, however I most often put something pricey like that in my wishlist on the company website and wait for a sale. At the very least the sales cover sales tax.

Depends on what it is, how much I really like it and how much use I can get out of it. I paid $36 for a lawn fawn pop-up die but I knew I would get a lot of use from it. So far 9 Christmas cards and I have a few ideas for birthday cards.

It is this one at SSS. I looked on Aliexpress but had no luck. linkI have that die (and the coordinating stencil). One of the first ones I bought at SSS when I started cardmaking. I've used it quite a bit! If you just want the shape, I'm happy to make some plain white ones for you. HONEST! However, if you want to do different colors behind the petals, you'll probably want the die for yourself. I'm on AE more often than I should be and I've never run across it there. ETA: posting at the same time as pinklady. And there you go! I have also purchased from that store with no complaints.

If you love it and can see using it a lot. Go for it!!!
It doesn't matter how many cheaper versions you buy you will always want this. Ask me how I know it .

Nope. No way would I pay that much for any one die. I probably wouldn’t pay that much for a set either. I can cut just about anything with my Cricut Maker; but even if I didn’t have one, I wouldn’t pay that much. And I wouldn’t buy it on Ali Express either.

Now multiply those prices by 1.35 for Canadian exchange! Ugh!!! There a single doe I want but is $53. Nope. Not happening.

Usually around $20, and that's for a cover plate or a coordinating set with a lot of pieces. I won't buy the single word dies that look like they're made from a font and go for $15 or more.

I draw the line hard at ~10$ Canada-bucks, shipped. Most of what I get is well under. Which means I buy second-hand and on Aliexpress. American craft company prices are way, way too high - that 25$ die double or triples in cost by the time it'd get into my hands. That's if you can even find one that's willing to ship outside of USA. Most don't.

I have paid more than that for a set of Anna Griffin dies. I only buy them on sale, but even on sale, they're really expensive. I do love them, though!

Unless it is a cover plate die (to cover entire front of card), I tend not to look at single dies costing over $6-$7. Cover plate dies are expensive, but I do have a couple I love. Just like azcrafty says, if you love it, get it. That said, the costs of all dies have risen quite a bit in the past few months. I was wondering when that would happen, and now it has.

I've noticed that too - used to be my AliEx orders were ~1.50-3$ Can per item. Now it's more like 3.50-5$ per set. Size doesn't seem to matter as much when it comes to pricing as it did pre-Covid. That is, a tiny set of dies is often a similar price to a medium one, even if they have similar shipping costs.
Some things seem to have come down though? I remember alphabet sets being priced much higher than most other sets of comparable dimensions, just because they were letters. Now they're more in line with everything else. Similarly really big sets haven't gone up much if at all - cover plates and full size nesting sets are still around the 4-6$ mark, which makes them more attractive now.
And it feels like the search feature has gotten far worse. There's no sort by new anymore, and it keeps throwing in a ton of items you've previously viewed even if they're already bought or in your cart. There's some URL trickery that gets around it somewhat but still, I should be able to run a simple search within a category without having to resort to it.
I've had a lot more quality fails too. Just got in a bunch of large orders and I'm having to request refunds for more than the usual ~20% that have some kind of issue. Despite all that it's still by far the better deal especially for international crafters. At least refunds are easy.

I went thru a few month period where I was not getting the die I ordered, it was missing from my package or didn’t cut. I did get refunds but it was a hassle going back and forth with the store owner because they opposed the refund. I’ve been sticking to a couple reliable stores (Piggy store, AddyCraft, Milliecraft) and have not had issues with my last few orders.

I've had fails from both 'new' stores, which aren't actually new just sellers doing the good ol' shell game, and long established ones. Granted I am very exacting about checking everything when a new die arrives.
It gets photographed & compared to the promised dimensions and finished picture, every single edge is examined for flaws like gaps, missing poke holes, and distortions. Then I run it with paper to check the cut quality, and assemble the parts if it's a layering die to make sure they match. Only if it passes every test do I clean up the dies and add them to my collection.
It's frustrating when a seller fights you on a claim, even when you clearly show there's problems with what they've sent. I find that AliExpress almost always finds in my favour though, mostly because the sellers don't have any evidence to counter clear pictures of things that are flaws or don't match what they advertised.
I've had a few quality problems even with PiggyCraft and AddyCraft, but they do tend to be a bit better than an average random store. I'd imagine it's because they pull products that get disputed for quality claims, as they should.

I’ve paid that much for a die before, but it was very detailed. I wouldn’t pay that much for the one you showed us.

I've wanted to buy a cover plate die for over a year now, but it's $34.99, so I haven't. That just seems crazy pricing. It's Stampin' Up so it won't ever go on sale. Maybe when it retired I can get it online for cheaper from a demonstrator needing to sell it.

If you are looking at a single cover plate die (not a part of a set that also cuts out stamped images and thus needs the stamp set, too), run over to scrapbook(dot)com and do a search on "cover plate die." I was looking at the pierced cover plate die that stampin up has had for about a year, but the price was just saying, "NO!" I found a couple of piercing cover plate dies from Honey Bee that were fairly close in design and were 30 percent cheaper. Otherwise, check half way through June or half way through December for their (stampin up) last chance "sales" for their seasonal catalogs, and in April for their annual catalog. Unfortunately, their sales are really only on those items they have an over abundance of, but there is the chance. Otherwise, start looking at those demos you might follow on youtube right after the sales to see if anyone is destashing. Don't pay ebay or anyone else full price for retired stuff.

I would agree that for most designs, especially geometric type ones that no one can claim to have exclusivity on, you can probably find another company selling something similar for less.
