(random question)
Will cantaloupe grow in the cooler climates (Minnesota for example) or does it need hot weather to grow?

It grows in MN. My mother hasn't ever had a problem with it in her garden, other than an abundance at once. Lol.

Try the Minnesota Midget Melon. It was developed by the U of M in the 40’s and it matures to about the size of a softball. It’s a mini canteloupe and very sweet. Easy to grow (trust me on this one!) and a fun size to eat or serve.
If anyone is local to Minnesota/metro area, our favorite green house sells them in packs for $1/plant in the spring.

One year, as kids, we were determined to try to grow them, despite not being in a warm enough zone. And they did grow all summer long, BUT, our growing season was simply too short, and so as we approached the start of cold nights we still had a cantaloupe that was only about the size of a softball. Mind you, that was from simply taking seeds from a cantaloupe, and since this was several decades ago, that meant it was already summer before we even started it, PLUS it wasn't any special variety that had a fighting chance in our area.

It grows in Iowa! It's way to late now, but you could try next year.
I have had mixed results. Keeping the right amount of water has been my issue.
It likes a sandy soil.
