I was so surprised by this situation, I immediately thought of posting here about it! LOL
For sure a FWP, but aggravating none-the-less!
Back story: we are moving DD to her first apartment in a city a couple hours away for her to start nursing school. We are staying in a fairly nice hotel close to her apt. The hotel has breakfast from 6am-10am.
Yesterday, we head down for breakfast at 9 am and it is SO busy, there’s hardly a place to sit. We clean off a previously used table and set our coffee down to hold its place while we go to get food.
There are two waffle makers and some kids and adults are making waffles.
We are milling around to see all of the food choices and we decide to wait in line to make waffles. Once in line, we see some kids are sad because they are out of waffle mix.
Many folks ask the breakfast attendant for more mix. His answer was that he was already out for the day. This surprised me!
So, we select different items for breakfast and more kids/adults are coming up, sad that there are no waffles.
We walk back to our table and pass a large party at the big center table. Mostly adults with a few older children. They had a weird, large amount of insulated coffee cups on their table. We watched and saw them taking the cups to the waffle machine and making waffles long after the mix dispenser was out!
These people had FILLED cups with waffle mix and were hoarding at their table for their group!
I couldn’t believe it! Once they were done eating, they threw away at least 5 or more unused cups of mix! So entitled and rude.
So today, we went down to breakfast about an hour earlier and there was no waffle mix again. I looked around the room and didn’t see the waffle mix hoarders today so they must have had an earlier breakfast too. LOL
Edited to add: they were using the hotel cups to fill with the waffle mix. They didn’t bring their own cups.

This wasn’t rude people’s first waffle hoarding rodeo! I mean to even come up with that idea to hoard some for later and then to prepare by bringing the insulated cups!! So rude. How could one feel ok preparing waffles they hoarded in front of the people they basically stole them from?? Including kids. Yuck.

That is very rude. And honestly, I thought you were going to say that someone stole your table after you set the coffees down.

That is so rude and weird. But also, the hotel should be managing their breakfast better. I am sure people do all sorts of similar hoarding type things at buffet breakfasts, so they should be prepared to deal with that and not keep running out of something that takes basically no time for them to prepare.

That sort of lousy behavior by people unfortunately doesn’t shock me like it used to. It’s too common now.
It is very poor service on the part of the hotel to run out of something like that long before the end of breakfast service and refuse to replenish it.

the hotel should be managing their breakfast better. Maybe they were running low and rationing it in order to have some waffles each day until their next grocery delivery came in?

That is such asshole behavior. People are so weird.
I love waffles, but I make them at home a lot so I rarely go for the waffles at a hotel breakfast bar. I’ve always noted that it’s the section that people are standing around with tense looks on their faces, though. Folks love a hotel waffle.

A new one for me, but honestly, I'm not surprised. Over the years I've found those "free" breakfasts tend to bring out the worst in some people. Since I'm not a buffet fan to begin with, we always have a backup plan for breakfast.

Devils advocate -
1. Could it be that they brought the mix in with them and did not take it from the hotel mix? Maybe if the party has dietary needs they would do that.
2. Much as their behaviour would irk me, I guess it's no different than that crowd making their waffles at the time they took the mix, assuming they did. They would still have reduced the quantity left for everyone else at that point, the fact they actually chose to make them later is immaterial, imvho.
However, it does look like they have a damned cheek.

If you are still there ask for a discount. Mention the tables were not cleared and two days in a row there were not any waffle mixes. Maybe they would give you a discount for the next time you come to town. Even consider contacting the corporate office.

Betting they(the rude people) went to have waffles the day before and they had run out of waffle mix and/or saw another large party that had done that same move.
I agree Rude and not something I would think of doing. But if a hotel is offering a continental breakfast from 6 to 10 they should typically have enough food for the amount of guests they have booked. If they don’t have enough waffle mix, an employee needs to take a quick trip to a grocery store. Obviously situations happen periodically, but waffle mix is cheap and easy to get…not something that they can’t resolve.
ETA - I agree with an above post… did they have enough bacon though? 😄

Is it better to have guests deprived of waffles or guests with medical issues caused by waffle substituting?

Yeah, if they are having breakfast from 6-10 then they need to have waffle mix available until 10:00. They should've made up more mix, especially if there are multiple guests asking for waffles - they've paid for waffles with their rooms after all.

Can they not put up signage that this is a different waffle mix.

We recently came back from a 4 week trip out to Vancouver Island from Ontario, so we had a lot of hotel breakfasts! A few of them had waffle makers but not very many people had them. Most places had signs saying that while they were happy to serve breakfast, no food was to leave the breakfast room as they weren't also providing lunch and snacks!
We also found that there was not bacon! All the hotels this year were just serving sausages and hash browns with their eggs. I was disappointed, but I guess the price of bacon was too high.
A few places did not offer breakfast. Every room had a fridge and microwave, so we also saved money by going to the grocery store for breakfast items to eat in our room.
One of the best cold breakfasts we had was at the hotel we stayed at in Canmore, Alberta. It wasn't free. You could opt in for $5 each. So we decided to try it, thinking they it would be still served in a breakfast room. But what they did was prepare a bagged breakfast. We each received a yogurt, a mini banana bread, a croissant, an orange and a juice. It was actually more than we needed and we were able to save some for lunches. We could eat it in their ski lounge. Our last mroning there, we took the breakfast with us to eat a little later on our trip and found they gave us 2 banana breads each!

This could cause issues with allergens. Is it better to have guests deprived of waffles or guests with medical issues caused by waffle substituting? I guess I am not understanding this. Is there only one waffle mix that they can use? Can they not put up signage that this is a different waffle mix. I'm sure the chain has a standard waffle mix that use at all locations. If I had an allergy, I would have checked to see if I could eat those waffles. If the hotel subs a different brand of waffle, it may not be safe for me. Yes, they could put up a sign listing all the ingredients of the substitute brand, but if someone didn't notice the sign or didn't read it carefully enough, then they would have angry customers for a different and much more serious reason. Honestly, I feel like some of the responses on this thread are venturing into Karen territory. Does the hotel advertise a free waffle with every room? Probably not. They advertise a free breakfast with every room. Was there breakfast available? Yes. Was it your favorite item? No. If your favorite yogurt flavor is strawberry and they run out and only have peach, does that mean they haven't fulfilled their obligation to you and you deserve compensation? That's pretty silly, in my opinion. Hotel buffets have a huge amount of food waste, approximately 50%. Being obligated to have every item available for the full buffet hours contributes to that. If having a limited amount of waffle batter each day means that there is none going to waste then I think that is a good thing. And if having a waffle for breakfast was a make or break part of my stay, I'd be lined up at the waffle maker at opening time for breakfast.

This is the perfect example of why free breakfast is not a perk I look for in a hotel stay. It’s either not good, messy and dirty, or overly crowded.

As long as there was enough bacon for everyone. That is what really matters. lol This reminded me of a time we had gone to a hotel breakfast. This man and woman had a half plate full of bacon about 5 inches tall and the other half was filled with link sausages. And they went back for more!
OP, it was rude of them and especially to take more than needed, but I'm assuming they too have gotten in on the short stick of waffles in previous travels, so hoarding was their way of solving their issue.

The fact that they threw away something people were looking for is obviously rude and wasteful. It does sound like there was a significant amount of shortage beyond 5 waffles. And I'll also confess, I'm a super early riser and am known to have a couple cups of coffee while the rest of my family sleeps. If the pastries are getting low, I've been known to grab one for each of them for when they join me - not sure it's any different - just a smaller scale. Family/group probably didn't get waffles first day so an early riser made sure there was enough for them when they arrived.
