Probably longer than I need to. Then I do drop some weight and they are gone. Drives me nuts. But I don't have the room to store them.
I would say probably like a year or so.
During Covid my workplace temporarily changed their dress code to where we can wear jeans and tees (appropriate though) tennis shoes. IF they keep this change I would get rid of a bunch (not all just some of the stuff I don't really care for) of dress stuff that I haven't worn since Covid started. If they go back then I want to keep them because I can have more options. I asked a few months ago on a statewide meeting what the plans are and the director is like "if I had it my way we would keep it"... but haven't heard yet what will happen.

The only exception to this rule in my current closet is the wedding dress I wore in 2011 when I married my husband. It is not just tight - it's simply too dang small. I don't care. I'm keeping it anyway. It makes me smile to see it. I forgot about this--I do have my too small wedding dress from 1990, too, and will continue to keep it.

I go through my closet about once a year. I pretty much try everything on and if it doesn’t fit, or I don’t like the way it looks, it goes right into the donate pile. And I still have enough clothes to last me the rest of my life. 😆 This is me exactly. Sometimes I can alter things to fit if they stretch out or something, but usually I give them away. I don’t like having a closet full of things I don’t wear.

20 years and counting..... Yep, I have clothes still in my wardrobe that haven't fit since I was 34yo. I will be 55 next month. I’m glad I’m not the only one. I am purging some Levi’s today I’m never going to get back into them and if I do I will want new ones. I’m also purging my belts. Keeping two that are nice but currently too small but purging about 20. I need to purge most of my closet as I only wear a small percentage of it but just can’t bring myself to do so. I used to purge constantly when I was younger no idea why I have such a hard time getting rid of stuff including stuff that’s too small the last twenty years or so. I really need to work on this.

I go through my closet twice a year. I try to be realistic about "smaller size" items, that I know I will never fit in again. With peri-menopause and menopause, my weight stayed in the same size parameters, but my shape changed and got curvier. I wear a lot of leggings, tank tops and cardigans. If my weight fluctuates, I still wear the same size. The one thing, I do keep more than one size is Levi's. I am a Levi's only wearer. I have a couple sizes, because of weight fluctuation (generally 5lbs to 15lbs). I prefer snug but not skin tight, s o I go back and forth between sizes.
I thought that was only me! I keep 2-3 sizes if I like them. I got rid of my bigger sizes. Kept two sizes. I'm kind of "in between" both of them now for some reason. The smaller size feel a little too snug but larger size won't stay up. I'm about to throw all of them out and start over if I can find a size that fits. Right now I'm feeling better in the stretchy ones.

If the are too big I get rid of them immediately ( except for maternity clothes I fears the moment I got rid of those I’d end up pregnant so those staying in the attic a good 19 years )
If it’s small I only tend to keep jeans & bras & 1 gray blazer that I’ve worn to interviews ( which always seems to fit when I have an interview lol )
Other stuff I get rid of when it doesn’t fit.
Oh and my wedding dress because my aunt made it. If my aunt hadn’t made it I’d have gotten rid of it though
