I'm going through my closet. There are a lot of clothes that just don't fit anymore. I'm struggling with getting rid of them because they are perfectly good and what if I go back to that size again?
When do you get rid of clothes?

I have the same problem right now and I am not going to be holding on to anything. For me, if I gain the weight back, I hope it will take so long for that to happen that the clothes will be out of style by then.

If they are too big, I'll get rid of them immediately. If they're too small, I'll hold on to them for years.

I go through my closet about once a year. I pretty much try everything on and if it doesn’t fit, or I don’t like the way it looks, it goes right into the donate pile. And I still have enough clothes to last me the rest of my life. 😆

I only keep things that I couldn’t replace if I got back down to that size. I don’t keep staples or neutrals. Things I keep tend to be like vintage skirts or designer suits in retired fabrics.
Anything basic goes out immediately if it doesn’t work anymore.

Unless it's an incredibly classic style, I get rid of it

20 years and counting..... Yep, I have clothes still in my wardrobe that haven't fit since I was 34yo. I will be 55 next month.

I go through my closet twice a year. I try to be realistic about "smaller size" items, that I know I will never fit in again.
With peri-menopause and menopause, my weight stayed in the same size parameters, but my shape changed and got curvier. I wear a lot of leggings, tank tops and cardigans. If my weight fluctuates, I still wear the same size.
The one thing, I do keep more than one size is Levi's. I am a Levi's only wearer. I have a couple sizes, because of weight fluctuation (generally 5lbs to 15lbs). I prefer snug but not skin tight, so I go back and forth between sizes.

You've been losing weight and have earned new clothes. Donate them immediately. Think of it as helping someone else in need out if it helps any. IMO, by keeping the too big clothes 'just in case' you are giving yourself subconscious permission to slip and gain it back in the future. Also, from experience I've learned that even if you do fit into them down the road (either with a gain or loss), the odds are very high that they are not going to be in style any longer. BTDT and ended up donating them in the end...after losing storage space to them for 10+ years.

I do a closet clean out every season and I get rid of anything right away if it doesn't fit.

I purge the entire house - clothes, closets, cabinets every 6 months. I buy the large moving boxes from Home Depot and fill them up. If I didn't use it, wear it in 6 months I don't need it. I've yet to miss anything I've donated!

I have a specific number of hangers designated for specific clothes. Hangers for pants and hangers for tops. I do not add hangers. So if I get something new, something of the same species has to go. Since I do this, if things do not fit they are gone even if there is no immediate replacement. This does not apply to shoes. I purge them when I run out the designated shoe shelf space in my closet.

I don't keep anything that doesn't fit or that I decide I just don't really like/ doesn't fit my now retired lifestyle.

And they’re still in style. 😢

Because I’ve got a endocrinological illness that caused dramatic weight gain the first time I had it and also with a later occurrence, I hold on to clothes that are too big “just in case”. If I didn’t have this illness, I wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of them.

It is why I weigh myself almost daily so that I notice before it gets out of hand

I keep them for quite awhile. I think I'm fooling myself to think I won't ever fit into a larger size again. I loved many of my outfits before I lost weight.

I have a box of jeans and some probably date back to almost 20 years old that are slightly larger and smaller. They are mostly Ralph Lauren, Eddie Bauer and Silver jeans, so they are mostly basic enough to hang onto, but I would let them go quicker if I didn't have the space. Personally, I like the stretchier jeans of the last 5 or so years...I think one pair covers the 2-3 sizes I need much better! Any other clothes, I probably would let them go since I'd probably get tired of the style if I fit into them again.

I'm listing my house for sale this week ... downsizing to a condo ... I donated about eight huge bags of clothing ... sizes ranging from 2 to 20 I'm hanging onto only the things I actually wear!

I need to purge my closet again. I retired 12 years ago and a few years ago I removed any item from the closet that I had worn while I was working. I need to purge again. After covid and I had 2 years of not going anywhere, there are many things I could remove and never notice they were missing.

Many/most things I just get rid of/donate because though I might technically get to the same size again, my body shape will probably be different, and it won't fit the same way.

I would only keep something super unique or that I love. Those are the only “old” clothes I will continue to wear. Otherwise, fashions change, and fabrics are getting so much better I would just upgrade if you change sizes again (which you won’t!)

I quit hanging onto clothes years ago. I generally 'flip' my closet and drawers twice a year for winter and summer. At that time I try to really purge anything that doesn't make me feel good to wear it. So obviously that includes clothes that don't fit well whether a bit too big or a bit too small (my weight doesn't fluctuate much).
The only exception to this rule in my current closet is the wedding dress I wore in 2011 when I married my husband. It is not just tight - it's simply too dang small. I don't care. I'm keeping it anyway. It makes me smile to see it.

A couple big moves has me 100% embracing a capsule wardrobe and I've never been happier. TBH, not having a larger size around helps motivate me to put the brakes on any weight gains. I still go through everything at least once a year and ruthlessly donate things I like but just never wear.

I really should get rid of some stuff. I have a ton of clothes I doubt I’ll ever wear again not so much because they don’t fit but because these days I run so much hotter than I did when I was younger. I used to always be freaking COLD so I have a ton of sweatshirts, sweaters, fleece, turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks that I would layer to stay warm. Yeah, not so much anymore. 🥵 Now I can barely stand to wear a crewneck t-shirt because they make me feel like I’m choking.
But on a related note, it’s funny the things my kid picks out of my discard pile that she likes and decides to keep for herself. It turns out that my old too short in the body length t-shirts are a great length for a short 12 year old, LOL.

I need to purge more, but I have several items that used to fit nicely so I’m hesitant to get rid them. I also need to figure out my new style—but that seems like a whole different conversation.

Unless I were actively and consistently losing weight right at the moment, AND the items were only a size below what I currently fit in, then I would pass them along. Because I know that life happens, and when life happens I don't tend to lose weight. I've kept clothes in the past, and all that happened is that perfectly good clothing, in nice condition and in style, sat around until they were no longer in style. And then on top of feeling badly that I didn't get back to that size, I also felt badly for wasting the clothes. So that's MY thoughts on how I handle my own clothing. But I understand that for others there are different situations, motivations, and thoughts/emotions involved.
