I have had problems with foot pain for a few years now. Last summer my plantar fasciitis was really bad, with most of the pain on the bottom of my foot but some across the top as well, particularly on my left foot. I have tried a lot of over the counter things like better shoes, Vionic slippers in the house, foot stretches, muscle rollers, etc. Right now the main issue is pain on the top of my foot. It hurts to some degree all of the time, but especially at night. I have been waking up with pain on the top and bottom of my foot and it is really bad. Besides continuing what I am doing and probably making an appt with a podiatrist, are there any other suggestions, particularly for night foot pain? I can understand the pain if I have been active or on my feet, but why is it worse at night?

Have you tried to sleep in a boot for plantar fasciitis? That really helped my sister

I don't think you should probably make an appointment with a podiatrist - make the appointment!

A bit out of left field but I'd recommend looking at the advice given by Petra Fisher on her Inst page Petra Fisher Movement. You'll have to go through various previous reels to find the feet ones

You'll have to go through various previous reels to find the feet ones Thanks for the recommendation! I just signed up for the free foot health program so will see what that entails. I hate to spend money at the doctor when most of the time they don't really give many suggestions or treatment, but I am at the point right now where I need to find something that works. I will also look at the night splint. I have seen them on Amazon but they don't look comfortable. But if they help...

A chiropractor can help misaligned bones in there with adjustments. I was having issues across the top of my foot and it really helped.

My guess is that it hurts more at night because thatās when a personās feet tend to be the most swollen. Where on the top of your foot does it hurt, over the arch or more over the knuckles? I have pain at the big toe joint on the top of my foot, likely due to bone spurs caused from arthritis and narrowing of the joint space like I had in my other foot. Iām about 95% sure Iāll have to get my left big toe fused like I had done on the right one five years ago. An x-ray was what determined what my problem was.

I have had PF for years, and I have not had a flair until now. I have had two sets of orthotics made in the past that were wonderful. They are now worn out. I saw my podiatrist a couple of weeks ago, and I have new ones on order. My particular insurance costs me $40 for the visit and includes new orthotics, the boot, etc. So for me, it's actually cheaper to see the podiatrist than try to buy all a lot of different things that don't work for me. I hate the boot. It does not work for me and is uncomfortable. I may have to get an injection but trying to avoid it. He wants me to wear my new orthotics for 3 weeks first to see if that does the trick. I did to a round of prednisone. It worked but then as soon as it wore off after taking it for 6 days, the pain is back. My flair is really bad right now, and I do get tremendous pain in my foot at night sometimes right now. My daughter (a physician also) will tell me "she doesn't do feet." LOL! Hope you get yours under control.

I havenāt been to a podiatrist in years, but when my kids have had to go to the same orthopedic clinic for appts it was at least $200 a time since the deductible isnāt met. And that was just a visit or checkup of a previous injury, not Including x-rays. I have to take my some tomorrow to have them look at the fingers that he broke and donāt seem to be healing, so will see how much that visit is.

Oh dear, I am sorry iamkristinl16. I hope your son's finger is okay, and sorry on the deductible. That stinks.

Oh dear, I am sorry iamkristinl16 . I hope your son's finger is okay, and sorry on the deductible. That stinks. Thanks. Last fall he was told that he had broken three fingers, but today the doctor said that it looked like his pinky finger was also broken at that time. Two of them are swollen and have poor range of motion. They said to try OT for 4-6 weeks and see if that helps with the range of motion. He didn't seem too concerned with the level of pain and just said that he would likely have arthritis early.

I think you need to find a better doctor. If I recall correctly, you are a health professional (but I may have you confused with someone else). If your doctor is giving you substandard care, it is time to move on. If the care is good, then you need to stop being so resistant to seeing a doctor. I feel like you are asking a lot of medical questions here when the issues pretty clearly warrant a doctor visit.
As for your son's fingers, if they werent healing back in the fall, Im surprised that the doctor didnt have a solution then (see above- you need a different doctor). I hope OT helps resolve some of his issues.
My ds broke a finger in high school, but we didnt have it looked at until 6 months later (long story, not my proudest parenting moment). At that point the Dr said that any treatment would involve rebreaking the finger and that there was no guarantee that it would fix the finger. DS declined and his finger is a little deformed. And he is now an OT. šš

Also, make sure the OT you take your DS to specializes in hand therapy.

And he is now an OT. šš Generally, I think the doctors are competent but Iām not sure there is much to do about a lot of the issues I have. So then I feel frustrated that we spent a lot of money for essentially nothing. For example, I asked about my foot at my physical appt. She said āa lot of people have plantar fasciitisā and said to do stretches. I have found much more helpful info on line. A podiatrist could prescribe custom orthotics which I really donāt want because they are hard, uncomfortable, and expensive (I wish I had a $40 copay but that isnāt the case). But Iām at the point where I will try it if needed. We just finished paying for my husbands $4000 colonoscopy and kidsā broken bones from last fall. Sorry if Iām not that excited to have new medical bills. We saw a different orthopedic doctor yesterday than in the fall. But besides the OT he said the same thing. One of his fingers healed a little crooked but that the joint aligned well. At the time he had a cast on but I wonder if the finger was aligned correctly under the cast? They said the only other option was surgery where they would take a bone from the wrist and put it in the finger, but they (the orthopedic sports doctor we saw yesterday and the hand specialist he consulted with) didnāt really advise that because there was no guarantee it would help anyway. The OT is at the orthopedic sports center so I assume they know what they are doing but we will see.

You really need to see a doctor. DD broke a bone in her foot just stepping in a depression in the grass. It caused a bunch of pain issues, even in her hip. It turns out that the women on DHās side of the family have an extra bone in their big toe, on the underside. The podiatrist was all excited and even took extra images for his collection.

Insurance is just not what it once was.. we have a 10,000 dollar deductible. I'm so greatful to have health insurance but the share you pay each time does add up. My daughter's insurance does not pay for psychotherapy so it really adds up fast..I don't even want to know what we spent on her mental health these past few years. I have cut back on seeing specialists partially because of this. We need socialized medicine in America.

Once all those distractions are put to bed, we start noticing all the body issues more. I don't know anything about your issue, but I have neuropathy and take Lyrica for it. Though I am currently moving from Lyrica to CBD oil, so at the moment am taking both.

I agree with the peas who suggest it is time to see a doctor; youāve tried all of the typical at-home treatments and those that are frequently suggested by podiatrists at the initial appointments.

Do you have neuropathy?
When mine or dd's is active, we get pain on the top of our foot. It is worse at bedtime and when sitting after a long day.

Also, I am not sure that the issue at night is that I just don't notice it during the day. Once in awhile I will have a shooting pain in my foot when I am sitting still, but generally during the day it only hurts when I am moving. Looking at the boot, I wonder if it is because when I sleep my foot is more pointed?

And just an update on me since I am currently in a bad flair. Hopefully some of this might help you. 1. I bought this little beauty and love it: Foot Roller2. I use the roller and then roll a frozen water bottle under my foot while I have my quiet time each morning. 3. The doctor has now put me on meloxicam (7.5 mg prescrip) for 3 weeks. 4. Using my new orthotics I picked up yesterday. They are firmer than he made for me in that past because I walk hard. This is what helped me the most last flair. 5. Always, always shoes from the moment I get out of bed. While your doc is right that many suffer from PF, you don't have to suffer. It can go away. Mine did for years. I am not sure what caused this current flair though. Maybe she would prescribe an anti-inflammatory to see if that will work. I did a prednisone pack, and it worked but when it ended after 6 days, the pain came back thus we are trying meloxicam for 3 weeks.

Iāll chime in RE: orthotics. While my foot issues are somewhat different than yours, custom orthotics have made a WORLD of difference for me. Yes, they are expensive (I want to say mine were around $500 before insurance negotiated the cost down some) but truly itās money well spent. I honestly wouldnāt be walking around much today without them. I wouldnāt say mine are hard exactly, theyāre made out of two layers of molded foam. My shoes are way more comfortable with them than without them.
I really need to get a second set but Iām holding off until I get through a needed foot surgery for my other foot, sigh.
