I am looking towards a vacation in Western Europe ~~~ Germany, Austria, Spain, France and Italy.*** UPDATE *** I have booked a cruise for early May - yeah! Sorry about any confusion about the title as I edited it. Well, I am thinking of booking a cruise - 13 nights - Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia in early May. I end up in Ravenna, Italy (Venice). Original Post ~~~ Looking for a vacation home for 1 person, in a smaller area but a safe area. I do speak German fluently but no Italian or French or Spanish. Late April until late May. I have traveled to Germany, Austria, northern Italy in the past. I may also do a cruise from a port of Spain, rather than staying in that country. My hobbies include needlework & fabric work so I am looking for stores that may stock these items. Cooking classes would also be enjoyed. A "home-stay" type of vacation, perhaps a rental of a flat for 2-3 weeks. sueg went to a place in Austria and I cannot find the thread where she shared pictures. Hoping that the *Power of the Peas* will be able to help me out. Thanks!

That’s the best time to visit, IMO. The trees have leafed out and everything is in bloom in the spring.
I can’t point you to a specific rental—I normally browse Airbnb for pretty places that are walkable in a town and read all the reviews. I normally only rent from superhosts and usually only for a few nights when we aren’t in the room that much.
When we are in Paris, I have a place by the Opera house that we like to stay, but it’s just a room and a bathroom. IMO, I’d want a living area for a longer stay.
Well, there’s two places that we’ve stayed in Normandy that I’d recommend. One right in Bayeux and one about 10 minutes outside Bayeux. I also know of a chateau in Honfleur where we may stay in 3 weeks, but that’s just a room too.
Oh, I thought of another. There’s an apartment where we stayed in Amsterdam that I’d go back to again!
And one more—if you are a sound sleeper, we rented a great apartment in Rome off the Campo de Fiori. But there is some nightlife and setting up the market in the morning can get noisy.
PM me if you want any links.

The place we went to in Austria was Achensee, specifically the small town of Pertisau. Lovely for hiking, and would be brilliant in spring. We stayed at a Wellness Resort, but there were all sorts of accommodations in the town, pensions, guesthouses as well as hotels. It is about an hour north of Innsbruck.

Venice The canals get a bit whiffy in high summer but it's such a wonderful city. Lisbon - warm but not yet high season. Fab city

We came back from 2 weeks in Greece in June. I can't say enough good things about Greece. If you wanted to stay in one place, Chania in Crete is stunning. Crete is the largest island in Greece. You could easily spend a month there. You can drive from one end to the other in about 3 hours.
We went to Crete, Santorini, Milos and Athens. It is so easy to get from one island to the other either by ferry or local flights.

We are planning for a Europe trip in mid April. So far we have France, Paris and Normandy, Switzerland and the Lake Como area of Italy. Why those areas, because that is where our exchange students are from and they have offered us free housing, so we are planning our trip around that. We are going to see them. I am not into so much touristy stuff, just want to hang out, catch up and let them show us their areas. We cannot wait.
I will be following this thread also.

smalltowngirlie Please make sure that your flights are into EU countries and not Switzerland for the insurance coverage/baggage coverage that EU25 offers. From there I want to go to Vienna and Munich. Gotta spend my money before the markets crash and I loose it all

Perhaps you could help me find a quiet, inexpensive hotel or pension? that I could stay for about a week. Then I could travel to Vienna for a day and Insbruick and Nurnemburg (my spelling is awful today). Looking at after May 17th.

Vienna would be a long day trip from Munich - I think it's around 4+ hours each way fyi. Salzburg and Nuremberg are much easier - less than 2 hours away. We flew into Munich and did a swing through Bavaria and also included Salzburg to satisfy my Sound of Music nostalgia. It's a beautiful area!

Yes, I am aware as I have traveled in this region many times. I would stay in Vienna a few days. The best direct flight back home is from Munich and I detest Frankfurt airport. Not a Sound of Music person, Saltzburg is over-rated and very touristy. In Vienna, I am hoping to take in a concert and do some stuff that I couldn't do the last time I was there. Innsbruck is better than Saltzburg, imo.

And FYI I just flew through Munich in May and it was an utter cluster we almost missed our connection - top 5 worst airport I've experienced ever - so perhaps all of Germany is now Frankfurt.

My flight is direct to Munich, so no worries about missing connections. It is great to have a choice of 5 airports to choose from, depending where I want to go. Pearson is the largest in Canada, so direct flights are more usual than unusable. A lot of people from the Western NY area travel by car to Pearson to avoid layovers when travelling internationally. I enjoy the airport as well as the Lufthansa lounge. It is the little things that make the trips enjoyable. Do you snark on every thread?

I was confused about what your question was, because the title seemed to be asking the best places to visit in Europe in the spring. Then the question seemed to be about a vacation home, but I couldn't quite figure out where. So, some of us were surprised to see that you already had a plan and a list of countries you were going to. Sometimes what might seem like snark is a miscommunication and confusion about what info you need and don't need!
You mentioned that your cruise is going to Yugoslavia. Did you mean another country in the region that used to be Yugoslavia?
It sounds like a lovely trip!

Still a long way off. Yugoslavia hasn't existed since the 1990s, so I wonder where they mean. Croatia and Slovenia are both parts of the former Yugoslavia, so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to use that name.

gar sueg They probably means Croatia and Slovenia. I have also secured a small apartment in Central Munich for a week prior so that I can visit one of my favorite cities - Munich! Very reasonable on vrbo and close to the main trainstation. Now to look for needlework stores, restaurants and other wonderful German things. Looking forward to going to an actual Aldi store and the Rosental Store. I have antique Rosenthal and love just looking at pretty things! Have to stock up on some German baking stuff that is hard to find at home. Starting to get excited.

If you are going more north at all Maastrict, ND, has a great fabric market with cheaper prices. I know of a nice fabric shop in Waterloo, BE, too. There’s also a little shop with a lot of the original fittings in Paris by the Opera House that has wonderful ribbons and trims.
