Do teachers still buy classroom sets of books? I think Scholastic might offer them? Yes…I am also looking on scholastic. I have a lot of points that I can use.

Go add some more items to your list. They’re almost all gone now, and I tried to send the blue chair, but Amazon said it can’t be shipped to a gift registry (I think you have to tell them it’s okay to give your address to outside sellers). Need more choices! katybee I just tried as well.... same message.

No gift option. 6th Grade Ninja Book on the way to you. I lost my brother at 39, he was 38 and I still miss him 22 + years later. You are a great sister.

I added that set to my wishlist! They’ll be there Tuesday. They are a brilliant futuristic reworking of classic fairytales. A bit of romance, but nothing beyond a kiss - so appropriate for 6th grade. Cyborgs, androids, space travel, colonization of the moon and more. And the heroine is 16 years old - so relatable to tweens. I’ve read them all.

6th graders (and middle schoolers) are also very much into graphic novels. Anything by Brian Selznick is good.

I checked back tonight and the blue chair is now on its way to you. Thank you! About books, we read through the first Percy Jackson series (by Rick Riordan) at that age. Really fun books, and age appropriate. No sex, but I don’t know if they’re school-appropriate. There are implications. You should read one first. I’ll send you the set if you want it … we’ve outgrown them. The second series is more sophisticated, the kids are older, and one of them deals with realizing he is gay. My kid brings home books like that from his middle school, but I don’t know what works for grade school in Santa Barbara.

My kids read all the Percy Jackson books in elementary school, often from their classroom library. They were big book fair sellers, too. Of course now in new Gilead, everything has changed, so who knows? I’m just boggled that the same women complaining about any hint of sexual feeling in a book were likely the same ones passing around a tattered copy of Flowers in the Attic in middle school. The world has gone crazy.

Also, The Janitors series - about magic/supernatural stuff going on at schools and the Janitors are involved. No one in the administration has objected to either series here.

Thanks, you guys. They seemed fine to me (I mean, this kid’s parents never married, so it’s not like he’s completely unaware of some the implications), but I didn’t want to suggest something that would set off WWIII her first week. Another book I thought of is Holes by Louis Sachar. It was a Newbery award winner and one of my most favorite books ever. And one more I really, really loved. It was recommended to me by one of his grade school teachers when it first came out, and I thought it would win a Newbery, but it didn’t. I’m still mad. The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle by Leslie Connor.

We had the Percy Jackson series at my K-5 school in Texas—so I would imagine they are fine here in Santa Barbara. 🤣 If your kid would like to donate them to a worthy cause, I’ll send you my address! Thanks again!

I figure they're be a range of reading levels...

Oh Lord bless your heart. I could never teach middle schoolers! I don’t even really like my OWN kids at that age! 🤣 I teach kindergarten and my middle school teacher friends feel the same way about my position so I think somewhere along the line it has to be what you were born to do!!

katybee is it self-contained or departmentalized? IDK. I asked my principal and she had no idea what departmentalized meant. So I’m guessing they are not… I wonder if 'departmentalized' is what we called teams when I was in 7th-9th grade. There were 3 groups students were put in. Each group had 4 different core groups and often did electives at different times during the day. Each teams' teachers would work together on themes, etc. One thing I loved and hated at the same time was my 6th grade teacher would split us into groups and quiz us before a test. We would have to confer to get the answers. She almost always told my group I knew everything so we would do well. I hated that.

I'm so glad to hear you had a great first day. I haven't read much outside the dinner and craft threads lately so I had missed everything. I'm sure an experienced teacher like you will be able to successfully pull off 6th grade.

Well for katybee 6th grade is still elementary school, so they're not quite middle school yet. In my county the elementary schools are K-5 and I think there's a difference between 6th graders who are still in elementary school and 6th graders who are in middle school. Also, I only sub in elementary and I prefer K-3, and I totally agree about middle school! haha

So glad it went well! We don’t start until the 30th with kids. Inservice starts Tuesday but a coworker and I went in Friday and will be going in Monday to get the little things that take forever, with everyone there and the constant interruptions, done. We got 2 big things taken care of Friday. We have a new room, we have 2 rooms and a large office space for special Ed, so we may start with bulletin boards. We’ve never really spent much time decorating. One of our rooms is the old Home Ec room and it’s is. Staff put there lunches and snacks in the fridges and someone always need a cup or something. We decided this year we’ll decorate and make them feel good to be in.
