Can anyone recommend a cologne/fragrance for a teen boy? DS15 has, thank the Lord, graduated from that nasty Axe stuff. I am getting him an electric razor for Christmas and would like to get him some more "grownup" scents. Any suggestions for a scent that is not too strong, preferably without an overtly sexualized name?

My teen son wears Only The Brave Eau du Toilette by Diesel. It's not too strong, as long as it's applied delicately!

As someone who is made very ill by fragrance, I'd encourage you to think of a different gift for him, as well as to talk to him about the many people made sick by unnecessary chemicals in our environments. Heck, there might be a cute potential romantic interest of his who reacts the same way. There are other ways to make oneself attractive to others..

O. M. G. Axe should be on the banned list of chemical weapons. Spread it, crop duster style over the ISIS strong holds and BOOM. Problem solved. (making light of a serious issue I know, but sometimes that is what you have to do.) I can't do scents, I get all itchy and itchy throated, so smelly boy stuff has been outlawed at the anxious household. But when they aren't around me, both of my boys really liked the Red Polo stuff. But, I would consider this stuff if he comes with it...I mean really, Gerard Butler with his Scottish accent. Be still my heart (loins.) *swoon*

In high school my son loved Ralph Lauren Polo Sport, but it is not cheap. Still it is a nice scent. I got it for him from Macys.
My other son wears Calvin Klein Euphoria

I like a lot of Burberry's colognes.

In high school my son liked the fragrances from Hollister and American Eagle. And they weren't very expensive.

DS 17 and DD's BF also 17 both wear and like CKOne. DS also has Ck Summer I think. Both are light fragrances that are not overpowering. My DH likes Joop, but it gives me a headache. I also second the American Eagle and Hollister scents.

I always get my DH a new cologne for Christmas (kind of a tradition), and I like to buy a set that has a cologne and an after shave. I give my DH the cologne, and teen DS gets the after shave. I usually go to Macy's and try a few of the "new" scents from that year and pick something I think DH will like, and it's usually good for DS, too. The after shave works well as a gift for DS because, since it's lighter, it's harder to use too much of it, which seems to be the issue with teen boys.

My 15 yr. old likes American Eagle Legend or 1977. He actually prefers the body spray and (thankfully!) he uses it in moderation.

My DS just "graduated" from the Hollister body sprays and colognes to L'Homme by YSL. It smells nice and he doesn't tend to go overboard.
For me cologne is a fairly personal choice and not something I'd want somebody else to choose for me. What about the Sephora sampler gift set where you get 10-12 samples of different scents and a certificate for a full sized bottle of your choice?

Axe sounds like the male equivalent to one of the VS perfumes the teen girls wear. I have 3 girls and we take part in lots of carpools. I have to drive with the windows opened sometimes to be able to breathe in the car! Even in the winter! I always tell the girls a little goes a long way, but they think more is better!

My son (12.5) has decided he wanted some cologne. So I took him this weekend to have him try scents and then actually wear the scent he preferred. There were several he liked but settled on Chrome to wear that day. It smelled really good. I liked it.

Don't do it! Even after they graduate from the AXE shit they don't understand that less is more. To them, more is more.

Thank you for the recommendations! Thankfully, DS and his friends have now learned that less is better! And I always try to purchase a lighter intensity body spray or eau de toilette instead of the straight on strong fragrance. I had forgotten about CK One...DS wore that a bit last year and I liked that it was very subtle. Most of his clothes that aren't soccer gear are from Hollister or AE, but I had assumed that those scents were just one step up from Axe I will have to check them out the next time that I am at the mall. I appreciate the input from the ladies who are sensitive to smell. I can only imagine how difficult it is to live with that on a daily basis. Personally, I prefer not to wear any scent. But, unfortunately, DS has very little self confidence and wants to "fit in," so he thinks he needs to wear a scent. If I purchase it, I can at least have some control about how strong the intensity of the fragrance is.

My personal favorites are Le Male by Jean Paul and Aqua Di by Giorgio Armani. Those are my expensive scents. Tommy and Navy are really good as well. I do use the BOD body spray.
The challenge with buying a scent for a boy, especially a teen boy is that each scent reacts differently to an individuals body chemistry. So what may smell good on one, may not on another, and with their hormones racing and changing, it may be best to take him with you. Try a couple on and wear them over the day to see which ones work best. Also one thing I learned to make a little scent go a long way...wrists, inside elbows and carotid arteries. These areas increase the effectiveness of colognes. Put a dab there and it will usually last much longer than other times.
