When you purchase paper how do you decide how many sheets to buy? I used to buy multiples, but decided that was too much and now I usually will only get single sheets. BUT, then I use a sketch for a double layout and need two sheets sometimes. How do you decide which papers you will buy more than 1 sheet? This feels like it should be easier than I’m making it. 😂 I do think I’m getting way better at knowing my style and what papers I will really use vs the ones that are pretty that I never use. One of the reasons I may be struggling with this some is I am trying to not buy “all the things”. I don’t need that much and I know now that I don’t need every paper from a collection. Just because it’s pretty doesn’t mean I will use it and I really am trying to be “intentional” in what I buy. Help! What’s your thought process on paper purchasing?

I tend to only buy multiples when it's a great, neutral background or a pattern that I really, really love. Not just really love. But really really. If I find basics like ledgers or wood grain on sale I'll buy multiples. I've found that when I buy multiples I don't use them like I thought they would. I get tired of collections pretty easily.

I only buy multiples (2-3 sheets) of those that I really really love AND have a project/photo in mind for.

Most of my paper purchases are single sheet, but I'll buy two if they're neutral enough? to make a decent background. Does that make sense?
A lot of my 2 page layouts are heavy on the photos, so not a lot of the background paper even shows. I like the patterns to be smaller, and I like the colors to not compete with the photos. So, neutrals. Or neutralish?
(I get a little more creative and expressive on my single page layouts with fewer photos.)

This is a loaded question...LOL
How many sheets I buy depends on a few things...
If it's a large scale pattern, I'll buy one sheet. If it's a fairly neutral pattern (small polka dots, hearts, stars, etc) or a tone on tone colorway, I'll consider two sheets. Lined paper that works well for journaling, I'll consider two.
If I like both sides, I'll get two.
Once in a while I'll get 3 - but I have to really like both sides and can see where I could use them in whole or in part.

If I am buying a 12x12 sheet, I figure out how many pocket page inserts I will be able to get.
Then I figure out how much I would use it.
From there I then select my number of pager to buy.
If a 6x8 or 6x6 paper pad, I usually buy 2. I did buy 3 of the recent Cocoa Vanilla line because it can be used for ds and dd.
Some papers I will buy an extra more than I think I will need and never have a problem using it.

One good thing about digital scrapping: I can buy a kit or paper pack once and use it as many times as I want. One bad thing about digital scrapping: I have to buy the whole kit or paper pack even if I only like a couple of the papers. You can't buy individual sheets. I found a digital kit yesterday that had two papers I loved, but I didn't really like the rest. I didn't buy the kit because I didn't think it was worth it for only two nice papers. Back when I paper scrapped, I used to only buy one sheet most of the time, but if I really loved it I would buy two or three sheets. I ended up with SO MUCH Basic Grey 'Colour Me Silly' as a result!

it depends...
I mostly buy one sheet if I'm buying by the sheet...I'm an 8.5x11 scrapper so even if I use it for a background, I still have the off-cuts to use on a second page or another layout or a card...
I'll buy two sheets if I have a project in mind for it that will be 2-pages AND it'll be the background or one page won't be sufficient.
I'll also buy two sheets if it's double-sided and I like both sides and/or there are cut-aparts I'm confident I'll use on one side and I still want to use the other side.
If I really love it AND it's versatile AND something I'll reach for over and over - then I'll buy 2 or more sheets.
If it's Lego themed...I'll buy a bunch, lol
I'm trying not to buy paper pads too often - they take SO long to use up. But if the price is low enough AND the designs versatile enough, I'll get them still. 6x6? I've decided to stop buying because I rarely reach for them

I purchase patterned papers by the sheet (only patterns that I actually like/will use, never entire collections) & rarely buy more than one of the same patterned paper, since I use each sheet sparingly (e.g. in blocks, strips, etc.) on 2+ layouts with cardstock as the base for each layout.

There are so many cute papers that I bought long ago, that I wish I had more of. So I started buying several, or a dozen....depending on the price. It makes me happy. It's my therapy.
What I like, another may not. To each, their own.

My buying typically falls into three categories. Most papers I only buy one sheet. If I really love both sides, and realistically think I will actually use both sides then I'll buy two sheets. Versatile basics, especially in colours that are not as easy to find as you might expect, I'll buy up to 10 sheets. Things in this category are the perfect distressed black polka dot, or the perfect shade of orange. These are like the little black dresses of my stash.
I will make the odd exception to buy something I love but am not entirely sure I'll use, but I try to be really honest with myself before I purchase about whether the things I'm buying are things I'll really use or whether I'm just caught up in the hype of new collection/pretty colour combo/fomo.

Ahh, shopping. A favorite activity of mine!
Typically, I will purchase one sheet of a piece of paper. I will grab multiples if:
1. Both sides are usable to me. This is especially true with sheets you can cut apart.
2. If I am working on a big project. For example, I am currently creating my wedding album. Ahead of time, I chose to use a paper collection that would be used throughout the entire album, then mix in other collections depending on layout subject matter. It is also an older collection (1canoe2 Creekside), so I bought a bunch of it when I found it. I wanted to make sure I had enough to complete the project.
3. If my husband is out shopping with me and he finds paper related to cars. At a recent LSS trip, he found a paper with a bunch of car parts on it. He grabbed the whole stack and put it on the counter. His justification? "How often do you find paper with a turbo on it?" He has added to my paper pile multiple times.
4. If the paper is really, really pretty!

I usually buy one sheet unless I like the b-side as much as the a-side. Then I get two. Occasionally there will be a paper that is just so, so gorgeous I get 2.
Sometimes when I use a paper that I really love I'll go back and buy another piece.

As others do I buy one sheet unless I really like both sides. Because I cut paper down and piece it to 8.5x11 I look at the paper for what that will involve as well.

I hear you on this...I also have tried to work on that. This is actually spurring another question I have, but I won't hijack your thread!
I generally buy 2 if I like it. That said, I don't buy a lot, I go thru spurts..I've only bought paper once this year and it was some of the new AC releases at Joann's. I probably only picked up about 10-12 designs, and most I bought 2 because I liked both sides.
I could probably think of 2-3 designs where I bought 3 bcz I was obsessed with it.
If I only like 1 side, I buy 1, but if I like both sides, I buy 2.
I don't buy whole collections anymore.

I used to buy two of every sheet--and I tended to buy full collections, so this means I have a huge stash of paper. I am trying really hard to break the habit of blindly buying two sheets. If I purchase a whole collection, I am trying to only purchase seconds of the sheets I really like. I've been looking at how much paper I use this year, and it is quite shocking how far I can stretch a single sheet of 12x12 paper. Right now, I am asking myself:
1. Will this be a background? If so, will I likely use the whole sheet, or can I cut it up (for example, into two 6x12 pieces) and wallpaper some old ugly paper? 2. Is there a neutral or other sheet in my stash that I can use in place of this? Often times, for generic tone on tone prints, I can pull something I already have and it feels so good to get rid of that older paper? 3. Is there an element I want to cut out and layer? This might mean I need to buy multiples just for the one side. And extra if I like the b-side too.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I’m at my twice a year crop and went on a spending spree at the store that hosts the crop. I did buy a few doubles of the paper I bought. It’s really funny how long a receipt can get when you buy a bunch of paper. Took a photo and sent it to my husband! 😂

If I am buying a set, I'll usually buy one with 3-4 extra papers that I really like. I usually make 2 sets of every layout, so having 2 sheets of my favorite is needed. If I am buying loose paper, I'll buy two of maybe half the line if I really like it and then add in some accent papers and from there I can usually do 2 sets of 3 ldouble page layouts.

I no longer live near any LSS, and I refuse to buy paper at a big box craft store unless I am truly desperate (can’t think of the last time I did). I don’t buy paper online because I can’t be sure the colors I get will be what they appear online. On the rare occasion that I get to visit a scrapbook store on travel, I will buy papers in quantities of 3 to 6 sheets if I love them and think I will use them.
I used to buy several sheets of papers I loved, when I lived near the LSS. I also stocked up when Tuesday Morning used to sell decent scrapbook supplies for a bargain. I am grateful I stocked up in the past, since now I have to shop my stash.

I usually just buy collections and then the cut apart journaling cards cause I sometimes use them for titles if they have a quote or word.
If I really love it I'll but two, I can always donate later to the school or girlscouts.

When shopping for papers, I seldom know exactly how I will use them. I scrap at home and often my scrap time is removed from my purchasing time by quite a bit.
I often buy collections. If there is a particular paper I like I grab up extras of those sheets. Because I scrap 2-pagers, I get at least two of those. If I really like both sides of a paper I have been known to get at least 6 or 8 of them. There are a few Cocoa Vanilla and Vicki Boutin papers that actually coordinate with each other and I love that I have enough of them to play with yet.
At a crop I am much more likely to just grab the one sheet I will be using immediately.

One sheet if I like it. One sheet if I like both sides but not for backgrounds.
Two sheets if I love both sides or if I love one side and it would be a great tone on tone background or if it’s a diagonal plaid/stripe. Or a nice wood grain.
Three sheets if it’s a Christmas paper with holly, diagonal candy cane stripes, or makes me gasp with adoration the first time I see it.
Four sheets if it’s got stars in a color/pattern that I love and the other side is swoon worthy.
…I have no shame….lots of paper but no shame. 🤣

I mostly get one sheet unless 1 I have a specific plan for a layout 2. I’m creating a project and know I want to repeat patterns 3. Or I have bought it before and consider it a staple item, like Chinagirl828 , I have some staple patterned papers over the years that I love to reuse because they are versatile and totally my style.
